Logitech MX 1100 Cordless Laser Mouse Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using this mouse for more than a month now. When the MX1100 first came out, the price was more expensive than the Logitech MX Revolution mouse. So, I was expecting that the MX1100 was going to be an upgraded version of the MX Revolution and that might not be true in some aspects.

I have been a big fan of Logitech for a long time. Ever since they made their first mouse, I was a customer and have never been dissatisfied. The only other company that I think is the best for a mouse is Microsoft (Yes, they are a great hardware company). The reliability of a Logitech mouse is very good and I still have many Logitech mice and trackballs floating around my house. When I got the Logitech MX Revolution mouse, I thought that I finally got a mouse that can go with the rest of my life. :) And when I saw a Logitech mouse that was more expensive than the MX Revolution, I was excited how Logitech would have improved their technology even further. The thing is that there is no fancy feature added to the MX1100 and some things are not better than the MX Revolution. Here are the things that I felt during the month of usage. I mainly compare the MX1100 with the MX Revolution, because the mouse in this price range, I think still the MX Revolution is the best and it can be served as a reference for a review.

1. The MX1100 is fatter than the MX Revolution. At first, I thought that the MX Revolution was big, however, the MX1100 is even bigger. As a matter of fact, it is fatter and more round than the MX Revolution. When I first grabbed it, I felt like I was holding a baseball in my hand. Since I got too used to the contour of the MX Revolution, the MX1100 felt a little awkward to me in the first place. But, once I got used to it, it felt much better. Still, I like the shape of the MX Revolution better (I have a small hand) and now the MX Revolution feels much slimmer than before.

2. The material used in the MX1100 feels cheaper than the Revolution. It might be because of the grayish black color and the light weight plastic, however, the touch and the feel of the MX Revolution is way better. And the color and finish of the MX Revolution looks even better than the MX1100.

3. As far as the weight is concerned, the MX1100 is lighter than the MX Revolution. So, if you prefer a light mouse and want to have less burden on your wrist, then the MX1100 might work better for you.

4. I have always liked a mouse with a rechargeable battery. However, the MX1100 uses normal AA batteries (2) and does not provide rechargeable batteries. The good thing is that Logitech claimed that the battery can last almost 9 months of a normal usage. If so, I would not complain about this. Because, the rechargeable battery in the mouse gets degraded and you should recharge the mouse more often over the time. And the rechargeable battery in the MX Revolution is not easily replaced. If the battery in the MX1100 lasts about 9 months, I am happy with it.

5. In the MX Revolution, clicking the wheel changes the scroll mode from the fast scrolling mode to the clicky wheel mode or vice versa. In the MX1100, you should use the small button right beneath the scroll wheel to do that. I am using the MX Revolution and the MX1100 together now and am always confused about it. But if you are one who uses either one, you do not need to worry about it. BTW, I am a huge fan of the fast scrolling mode (you can scroll many pages within a second) and it also works beautifully in the MX1100.

6. Finally, there is a new thing in the MX1100. It is a thumb button and is located under the place that you put your thumb on it. It is not visible and hidden inside the rubber under the place for your thumb. Once you get to used to it, it is very convenient. As you expect, you can assign any action to this thumb button. And the horizontal wheel used to located near the thumb in the MX Revolution is gone. I am not missing it since I did not use it much. I assigned the volume up/down to the horizontal thumb wheel, however, I always forget that the wheel is there. I think Logitech might feel the same way that it is useless. No complaint.

Overall, the MX1100 mouse is a great mouse. The tracking couldn't be better and it is a top notch mouse in every aspect. It just has a sibling that shines more, the MX Revolution. Now the price of the MX1100 is approximately $10 cheaper than the MX Revolution and if you prefer a light mouse with a fat and round design, there is no reason not to choose the MX1100. I dropped the MX1100 more than several times from the table and it still works very well. It did not have a single scratch on it. It is very sturdy and firm. And if you are not a big fan of a shiny and glossy surface mouse like the MX Revolution, the MX1100 mouse is for you. They are like the glossy and matte papers in the a photo printing. The choice is on you.

(More customer reviews)Installation is a breeze. Plug in the charger. Turn on the mini switch on the back of the mouse. Pop the USB receiver into a USB port. (It is so tiny; it is the size of 2 USB plugs altogether.) then use the auto install on the CD. Then shut down, remove your old mouse, and reboot. Done. By the way, the lithium battery had a sufficient charge right out of the box. You're up and running in a couple of minutes.

You don't need a mouse pad. Right away I put it to the test. You know the frustration you feel when a mouse doesn't work, restricting you to the mouse pad. Not this one. I tried it on a gloss lacquer finish maple desktop table, it worked great. Then I said, "Aha, I will put it on the perfectly clear, see through plastic, it came in", and it read perfectly again. You could do microsurgery with this thing, using it on clear plastic, your pants, your legs,or whatever. No movement is too fine, no matter what surface you use it on.

The scroll wheel has a special feature, it tilts right and left. That is a whole new set of choices. You can custom set the features yourself in the Set Point software. You can set up this whole mouse to your specifications, and it is an intuitive menu for doing so. For scrolling at hyper speed, I set "Cruise down" and "Cruise up" at 40%. With a gentle tilt, you are rapidly moving up and down the page, able to stop anywhere. At 100% the page is flying by you. I love hyper speed at 40%. The bottom line is their is no having to scroll the wheel like crazy to get down to the bottom of a long page. It even has an autosensing feature that automatically adjusts the speed to the size of the page. In addition to the tilt is the standard scroll wheel function, but now with 2 speeds, normal and extra fine, by simply pressing down on the wheel, to toggle between the two.

You have presentation flexibility because the mini USB receiver is good up to 12 feet away, even though it had to go through my couch to get to me.

This thing rocks. It's got a topside mini search button that you set up with your favorite search engine. All you do is highlight a word, or phrase, hit the search button and you're there. (HUGE time savings.) Great for learning software; you've got the book, you've got the help file, but you need more. Highlight the topic, one button, and instantly their is a page full of help called Google. (for example)

The document scroll feature is cool enough to deserve its own scroll wheel on the side, which it has. If you're working between two or more programs, or documents, a quick push on the scroll wheel, up comes a box with all the running applications/docs right under your mouse cursor. Then, the tiniest movement brings up your program. Way faster than using the task bar.

The design is something right out of Star Trek. Finally, someone built a mouse with tons of features and the buttons don't get in the way. The top of the mouse doesn't have a left and right click panel, instead the complete top flexes on each side of a slit, in the front middle. So it is an arch that is flexing. It has a Frank Lloyd Wright feeling to it. It works perfectly, very sensitive. I guess you can tell, I love this mouse.

I have been using Logitech keyboards and mice on my machines for quite some time. This thing is a technological breakthrough in sensitivity, intelligent design right down to how they wrap the CD, and I have to admit, beauty. You should see it. Whether it is sitting on the charger, or on your desktop, it's beautiful.
I'd like to say it is a toy, but it is a very serious business tool that makes your work more efficient, and exact. This is the way mice should have been made all along. The only thing wrong with it is you won't be happy with your old mouse anymore. I should get one for every machine. Highly recommended.

PS: This thing is intelligently wrapped. You can be sure that in a UPS (Unbelievably Pulverized Shipment) :-) it won't be flopping around in the box. To remove it once it arrives, do as the instructions tell you, and press on the mouse "On the logo" and it pops right out. The mini receiver pops out just as well.

Logitech Wireless Mouse M510 Review

(More customer reviews)I have been seeking a fully-featured wireless mouse for the past two weeks and have finally found my optimum choice in the Logitech Wireless Mouse M510. The attributes I sought out included the following:

1) Full-size and ergonomic shape. I have fairly large hands, so most notebook mice cannot provide a sufficiently comfortable experience for long periods of usage time.

2) High battery endurance. I prefer a wireless mouse that minimizes battery replacement to improve overall convenience and reduce my dead battery collection.

3) Laser technology. A setting of at least 1200 dpi is necessary to track subtle movements, which are particularly important for graphical applications (i.e. solid modeling and photo editing software). Laser technology also allows for usage on most surfaces.

4) Inconspicuous wireless transmitter. I find great appeal in a low profile wireless transmitter, as it saves the user from having to remove the device from a notebook during travel.

While many other competing products from Logitech offer appealing features such as "hyper scrolling" and any-surface tracking a la "Darkfield", they each carry their own weaknesses as well. For example, I considered various notebook-class mice, including the Anywhere MX and the Marathon M705, yet as a person with fairly large hands, I determined that they were simply not large enough to use comfortably. Notebook Mice:

With respect to the Anywhere MX, while its touted "Darkfield" technology and "hyper scrolling" are admittedly persuasive, does not appear to yield the battery endurance that I desire. The form factor is certainly far too small to permit the ergonomics my hands require.

In consideration of the Marathon M705, while it certainly has the battery endurance I desire, as well as "hyper scrolling", it still remains too small, and the price tag currently does not justify its purchase. The Anywhere MX (at the time of research) could be had for nearly the same price after rebate, and if I were to choose a less-than-comfortable mouse, I would be more inclined to compromise some battery life for features.Full-Sized Mice:

Moving on to full-sized mice, I spent some time researching the Performance MX. The Performance MX touts a host of features, including a low-profile wireless transmitter, but I am not fully convinced that they justify the price. Furthermore, this device utilizes a cradle for charging, and I would prefer high endurance, which typically entails the exclusive use of AA or AAA batteries.

While researching this category, I came across the M510, which although it carries less features than the aforementioned products, represents the best compromise to the attributes I desire in a mouse. Notably, this mouse has a great form factor, and while not as large as the Performance MX, fits comfortably and ergonomically even for my larger hands. Admittedly, I would prefer that the mouse were a bit longer to fill out my palm, but in the manner I handle the mouse, comes very close to an ideal fit. Logitech claims battery endurance up to 2 years, which far exceeds my expectations, and reduces my reliance on spare batteries. The device uses laser technology, which actually does not perform optimally on my aluminum desk, but tracks perfectly on my microfiber mouse pad with high accuracy. I honestly did not expect the mouse to function well on my desk, so this is more of an observation than a concern. The device also includes the low-profile wireless transmitter, which overall adds to the convenience of the product, and lends itself to a more travel-worthy full-sized mouse. As an additional note, the forward and back buttons work perfectly, and are quite easy to access. Extra buttons that are actually usable certainly add greater value to this product.Conclusion:

While this mouse certainly has less features than some of the competition, it can be had for a reasonable price, which from Amazon lies in the range of $30 to $40. The form factor is excellent, the battery life is sufficient, the accuracy is great, and the wireless transmitter is convenient. For those seeking a full-sized and ergonomic mouse that still affords some portability, the Logitech M510 is a great option, and should represent a serious candidate for any mouse-purchasing decisions.

Logitech Wireless Marathon Mouse M705 with 3-Year Battery Life Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this mouse for my desktop computer because it fit my hand well when I tried it in the store. I initially had the USB receiver plugged into the BACK of the computer and I had serious tracking issues. The mouse worked so poorly at first that I had to go through the software install using just the keyboard. I was hoping the problem had to do with drivers. It didn't. The problem was simply that the USB receiver was too far away from the mouse (or was blocked by too many obstacles). I moved the receiver to a USB port on the front of my PC and the mouse now works perfectly. And just so I don't scare too many people away with concerns that the mouse has a short range, my computer sits on the floor to the left of me and the mouse sits to my right. There's about four feet between my mouse pad and the back of the computer, with plenty of metal and clutter in between.

It's probably safe to assume those other reviewers had the same problem. If you're using this mouse with a laptop I'm sure you'll be fine. If you plan to use it with a desktop, you may want to get a USB hub if your computer is too far from the mouse and doesn't have a front USB port you can use.

(More customer reviews)I don't usually don't take the time to rate products, but I really like this mouse and noticed that some others had problems with it while others loved it.Here's my bottom line on it:
1) DOES NOT FEEL CHEAPLY MADE -- to the contrary, feels heavier and more substantial than the previous Logitech corded laser mice I have owned; I have used it for 6 months or more and the feet are not coming off or anything like that.So I really don't know what other reviewers are talking about here, unless they are used to some kind of high-end heavy duty mouse or something.Looking at my mouse, it would take an effort to physically take the feet off of it, so I can't understand the "separating feet" comment either.
2) WIRELESS RANGE CAN BE AN ISSUE -- some of the other reviews mention this mouse has "jerky" behaviour.I had the same problem until I moved the USB receiver from my PC tower (which was under the desk) to a USB hub I have on my desktop that is closer to the mouse.So jerkiness is not an inherent problem with this mouse, but you DO need to be able to place the USB receiver module in close enough proximity to the mouse to ensure you don't have this problem.
3) WORKS GREAT WITH WINDOWS XP -- some reviewers had problem using this mouse with one of the MAC operating systems.I can't comment on this, but I had absolutely no problem or trouble using this with Windows XP.Was a seamless process.
4) GREAT PRICE -- I think $39 at Amazon is a great price for what you're getting here.Some of the other cordless mice are over $100, so logically these more expensive mice have to be better/more features in some respects or they are taking you to the cleaners!But this mouse meets all the requirements I have for a mouse.
