Altec Lansing VS2320 2.0 Powered Speaker System Review

Altec Lansing VS2320 2.0 Powered Speaker System

These speakers sound great especially for such a reasonable price.I purchased these to have at work so I could listen to my iPod.With the previous portable speakers I had there was a hissing sound in the background and the sound quality was average. With these Altec Lansing speakers the difference was very noticeable - no hiss, great full sound. These speakers were hooked up when I went to Target so I was able to listen to them before I purchased them. After buying them I compared them to the harmon kardon speakers that came with my computer, these Altec Lansing speakers blow those away.

I also listened to 2 other models by Altec Lansing - the VS2321 model was only $20 more and included a subwoofer, the next model up was about $80 again with a subwoofer - both had fantastic sound and I would highly recommend them.Because I was buying these for work I didn't want to spend too much so the VS2320 model works great, for home I would consider bumping up to one of the other models to get that additional boost of sound from the subwoofer.Altec Lansing delivers great full sound for an unbeatable price.

Altec Lansing VS2421 2.1 Music and Gaming Stereo Speaker System with Microphone (Black) Review

Altec Lansing VS2421 2.1 Music and Gaming Stereo Speaker System with Microphone
Average Reviews:

I'm an audiophile, I listen critically to every nuance of music and enjoy faithful reproduction of it.That said, I'm quite surprised that these speakers actually create a decent image in a nearfield setup.Voices are palpable and details are presented nicely.

I've certainly heard worse for 10 times the price, that's for sure. The sub is rich and full and easily overpowers the satellites. It's not overly boomy, maybe a little 'wooly' but nice.Just keep it turned down to a third or fourth on the sub's volume control.

I'm thinking with some break-in the sats may dig a little deeper and the whole system will integrate a little better. My only criticism at this point is there is a bit of a mid-bass dip... or a hole between the midrange and deep bass... And again, I'm hoping this fills in as the speakers move more freely after more use.

I'm very impressed with this little system at any volume. It gets plenty loud for my office and you can really rock out if you want to... And it sounds good at low volume too!I'd suggest a simple placement, with satellites left and right of the monitor and do whatever you have room to do with the sub.

This system comes with a volume control that includes main volume, treble control, and a microphone in one easy-to-use unit. The main volume knob is nice and big with a light so it's easy to find and adjust quickly if the phone rings.

I haven't tried the microphone yet but my system did not come with the microphone cable (nor did it come with any instructions). You'll need a male-to-male headphone-type cable to connect the main controller and mic to the PC.

Great system for the price, highly recommended.

Altec Lansing VS4121 2.1 Computer Speaker System, 3 piece Review

Altec Lansing VS4121 2.1 Computer Speaker System, 3 piece
Average Reviews:

... the Altec Lansing VS4121 2.1 Speaker System provides a remarkable return on a relatively meager investment. As I write this, I am listening to a 1930s recording of Django Reinhardt and hearing every note and nuance of the music; as well as every cough, click, and pop on the antique recording. A $99 investment is providing a vastly improved computing and listening experience while at my desk.
The speaker system comes in a light and compact packing box. The included instructions are rendered completely superfluous by simple and intuitive design - just stick the green wire in the green hole and the tan wire in the tan hole, then turn 'em on and enjoy. Connection to a computer, MP3 player, or the like is via the standard 1/8 inch jack. Additionally, an adapter wire is provided for those wishingto use the speakers in a dual-RCA connector application (e.g. a Sony Playstation). Disappointment will result from inflated expectations. The Altec Lansings are not audiophile speakers. A critical ear will easily detect the sort of coloration common in desktop systems. The midrange is a bit weak; but the downfiring design of the relatively large mid-range cones in the satellites goes a long way towards minimizing this effect. Once the ear becomes accustomed to a slight tinniness, the remarkable clarity of these speakers becomes apparent. The bass module easily does its share - and then some. Tweak the EQ and crank the volume, and you'll have a fine system for gaming or DVD watching at your computer (I can rattle the pens in the cup on my desk if I wish). Build quality appears first-rate, and I have had no reliability problems. Controls are close at hand - if your hand is near the right satellite speaker. Volume, bass, treble, and power are on the front face (see picture, above); and a welcome headphone jack is on the right side of the same speaker.
I suppose this system may be viewed as an evolution of the Altec Lansing ATP3LA 3piece speaker system, well-reviewed here at Amazon and available as of this writing for $60. The VS4121 bring a freshened look, the aforementioned headphone jack, and some sonic tweaking to the table.
I examined the competing models from JBL, Logitech, and Creative. Bearing in mind that listening tests are so subjective as to be of dubious value, I will say that none matched the Altec Lansings their clarity and openness of sound, or their cozy design values. Creative's I-Trigue came closest; but its design involved a separate wired control unit that I feared would clutter up my desktop. Further, this control was far too light and skittered away from the approaching hand. Within this price range, you can purchase the Altec Lansing VS4121 system confident that you could not have done better in the computer speaker category.

Altec Lansing VS2620 Speakers for Computers and MP3 Players (Black) Review

Altec Lansing VS2620 Speakers for Computers and MP3 Players
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are decent speakers, but not great. If you just wanted a speaker upgrade for your PC or Mac, this might fill the bill, but don't expect super hi-fi sound.

Pros:
1. Easy set up.
2. Front panel controls
3. The power brick is not so huge that it crowds your power strip.
4. Front panel plug for mp3 that cuts around primary sound source.
5. Non-distorted, clear sound. Good for jazz, classical, most pop.

Cons:
1. None of the parts detach from each other, so you can only place the speakers the distance of the existing cord, which is about 3'.
2. The nice design takes up a bit more desk space than I like, and there is no wall mount hole on the back.
3. There is only a "tone control" not a separate bass and treble. SO you only get one, or the other.
4. Bass is too weak for rock or R&B, etc.

Conclusion:

When you take the $27.39 price into account (current Amazon price) these are really good value speakers. They sound good, set up easily and don't look as cheap as other speakers in the category. However, if you expect these to blow away some Bose PC speakers, you will be disappointed. Your wallet, however, will be happier. You can also get part way there by upgrading to the Altec BXR 1221 three piece set for$29.95. For the extra $2, you get bass and a "little" freer speaker placement.

Altec Lansing BXR1221 2.1 Speaker System (Black) Review

Altec Lansing BXR1221 2.1 Speaker System
Average Reviews:

My laptop has XP Media Edition software, but really bad speakers. If I want to listen to anything, I need external speakers or headphones. For the price, this Altec Lansing Three-Piece Speaker System does a good job.The bottom line is good, well balanced sound for a low price.

Now the caveats:

On speakers that require an external power source, I would have expected to be able to crank up the volume a bit more. When listening to modern CDs or MP3s on my PC I can turn up the sound high enough to fill a large room without distortion, but when watching an old movie (say 1930s vintage) I can turn up the volume all the way and the dialog is barely audible.Other speakers I've used don't seem to have that issue, but they were more expensive.

This system may be compact for a shelf or desk, but it's not tiny and don't expect it to be portable. The set up is lightweight but rather bulky. The subwoofer is roughly the size of an elongated Kleenex Boutique tissue box; the satellites are approximately the size of Campbell's soup cans.

There are lots of wires, too.The right satellite, the one with the on/off and volume control knobs, has four separate wires: 1) hardwire to the other satellite, 2) hardwire to the jack that goes to the audio source (computer or MP3 player), 3) a jack to connect to the hardwire coming from the subwoofer, and 4) a jack for the wire to the AC adapter. That's a lot of wire coming out of the back of one soup can size speaker!

The wall plug is on the AC adapter.Something to consider if you are already using outlets for the PC, monitor, printer, and whatever other peripherals you need - a power strip may have multiple outlets, but this can easily use one and cover up another.

If none of these observations is a deal breaker for you, then the low price and good sound are a good value.

Altec Lansing VS2621 2.1 Channel Speaker System Review

These Altec Lansings are quite a bit of speaker for the money. Having previous experience with Creative, Logitech, and Altec Lansing, I initially wanted to give those a shot, but eliminated the Creatives due to price.

The Logitech system, the X-240, was an ok set. Decent looking, similar wattage, and the sub even had a bass volume knob. Speaking of the sub, it is a great little piece, delivering deep, loud bass when asked with minimal distortion.

However, I use my computer speakers mostly for music, and here is where the Altecs take the cake. Where the Logitechssounded muddy and flat, the Altecs are crisp, clear and open. The mids and highs are great. The satellites are far superior to the Logitech. The Altecs sub is a heavy, well built and quite attractive. I found that where the Logitechs sub boomed, the Altec nicely integrated the bass with the mids/highs. The bass is nice and controlled, and can get loud without distortion. The only plus the logitech had, musically, over the Altec was that the sub on the Logitech would get louder and had a volume control, where the Altec does not. However, for musical purposes, the Altec sub definitely has more than enough kick.

My conclusion is that each set has its own merit. For games and movies, where clarity is less important and bass is, go for the Logitech. But if you want crisp, clear sound with well rounded but not super loud bass, Altec is the clear winner.
