(More customer reviews)The Power PC G5 iMac series were/ are great computers. Like all Macs, their operating systems (from 10.3 to 10.4 for the G5 series) are very user friendly and naturally resistant to most computer viruses. They are solid performers, rarely crash and have a service life of 5-6 times that of PCs from a similar vintage. I'm still running my G5 iMac 4+ years after I bought it, and it works as well and as flawlessly as the first day I turned it on. The on-screen presentation and dock functioning are great, as are the customizable widgets that put a wealth of information updates at your fingertips (literally at the click of the center or right mouse button), and yes, that is customizable too (like almost everything else on the Mac).

As far as software goes, Macs are unparalleled with creative and artistic programs, especially when it comes to the learning curve and picking up new editing/ creating skills. They come with "iLife" pre-loaded, and this offers all that most users need to edit and manage their digital music, picture and video libraries. Do you have an aspiring home-video producer in your house? Then Mac's and iLife are the best place to start. And when you're ready for full-featured, professional music, image and video production, Apple has a full line of software ready to go. You'll likely be able to find programs like "Production Suite" and "Final Cut Pro" at serious discounts for these older G5 iMacs. Even in standard user applications like word processing, spreadsheets, and audio/video presentations, Apple has come a long way with its "iWork" line and (at least in my opinion) puts Microsoft Office Suite to shame. Within iWork, users get "Pages," "Keynote," and "Numbers," each of which rivals "MS Word," "PowerPoint" and "Excel" respectively. The documents, presentations and rough databases are superior and easier to learn than anything I've encountered in Microsoft's Office Suite. Numbers takes some getting used to, but once you are there, its quality and vibrancy make it worth the effort. My only complaint with the G5 series computers is that some of them don't run OS 10.5 (Leopard) very well.

Bottom line: I used to be a PC guy. Then I bought a Mac and haven't looked back. Yes, Macs are pricier, but just as in everything else in life: you get what you pay for. The G5 series iMac is a fine machine, and their resale value holds better than any thing in the PC world.

1st of all the individuals who wrote the 1* reviews obviously don't own an iMac and probably own a lot of MS stock so they are Apple bashing.I am in the military and have used PC's since there were PC's.I spent one tour as the IT manager for my command.My only experience w/ Macs had been at my kid's school and with my minister.I was extremely skeptical of Apple and researched for several months before deciding on the iMac.I was tired of having the BBB (big beige box) next to my desk.I had seen the new iMac in the news during its intro and was immediately smitten.I ask you why in the yr 2K3 do computers still look like they did 20 years ago?Apple broke the mold with the original iMac and then vaporized it with the new iMac.I've had mine for about one week now and my wife is about ready to divorce me.The engineering and design that went into the iMac make it the most usable computer on the market.Try moving a regular LCD monitor with one finger to position it precisely where you want it.I can bring the iMac?s monitor right over the keyboard for typing and surfing or put it up high to watch DVD?s with my kids, truly awesome.The 16X9 aspect ratio is great for everything, especially browsing w/ two windows open, one on each side of the screen.I get so tired of hearing how you can't upgrade it.How many average PC users actually crack a case and upgrade their PC's?Not many I'll wager.If you're worried about the iMac's 1GHz processor vs a 2.x GHz PC clone, don't.I run a 2.4 GHz at work and I see no difference in everyday apps.I suppose if you're a game freak you'll want a PC but my kids and I play games on consoles now and use the computer for important things like the wonderfully educational and preloaded World Book encyclopedia.If you're really interested read up on how the G4 chip processes in comparison w/ the PC chips.Set up was a breeze, about 15 mins including unpacking.The speakers look & sound incredible, and there's no power cord!Do you really need a subwoofer w/ a computer (more wires)?I was unsure of the Apple one button mouse but now I'm sure, no carpel tunnel as I move my hand around more the only thing it lacks is a wheel as you can hold the control key and pop up a menu window anywhere (you can add a multi-button mouse if you want). I love the "Dock" that holds all frequently used program icons, it makes opening an app a delight as each icon blows up when moused over.I have yet to use the super drive for burning DVD's or CD's but it plays/loads them fast and fine.The iMac is very quiet and just wait until you see it sleeping for the first time, way cool.Lastly if you know your way around MS Windows then don't fear Mac OS.I estimate it took an hour to familiarize myself w/ the important parts of the system.Go look at the iMac, talk to Mac users, read the switch testimonies and make you choice.Anyone who doesn't give the iMac a test drive and buys a clone will miss a great opportunity to own a truly useful home computer.

(More customer reviews)I have had this computer for a week now and absolutely love it. The Magic Mouse took a little time to adjust to,but now it is a favorite. The iMac screen is large (I upgraded from the 17" early 2006 intel iMac), but not so big as to be distracting. Apple, of course, made the experience of setting it up and getting online a breeze, even to the point of having the batteries already installed in the keyboard and mouse, and having the two linked to the computer. The pros include the beauty of the LED screen, the speed of the processor, the fact that it shipped with 4GB of ram, well...that it is every bit the consumer friendly machine I have come to expect from Apple. The upgraded graphics card really is noticeable. It is like a vase of flowers...I love to look at it even when it is off. The SD card slot is most handy. It is every bit as quiet as my previous computer.

The cons include the fact that my 3.5 year old iMac had a matte screen, and the glass front of this 21.5 " iMac does pick up reflections easily. But since I tend to keep my place dark and being a morning person don't have a lot of sunshine to contend with...for me it is actually a better screen than my old iMac's matte screen. It shipped with Apple's shortened keyboard (no number pad) and that took a bit of acclimation. Technology advances so my old firewire devices now need an adapter to work, firewire 400 to 800, but that is a tiny problem. Wish Apple would build in a fold down port for iPods to recharge. And all that glass on the front makes it a little heavy to haul around.

All in all, I love this computer and can heartily recommend it, and that comes from a relatively low income person who watches his money closely.

(More customer reviews)I've been a PC users since the PCXT days.Now I have a mac.I really have been suprised at how easy it is to learn the mac way of doing things.

I'm a programmer by trade (not a desktop coder, but mainframe/database) and I actually decided to buy the iMac because of my desire to create apps for my iPhone.I was shocked to learn that I could keep my windows environment.I could have both worlds.

So far, everything has been very easy to install and use.I had the windows/vmware setup and the iPhone SDK install the first day.Coming from a PC, I'm delighted at how elegant the interface is, even the mouse and keyboard are elegant.The screen is very nice.Colors seem very good, but I haven't done any photo editing and color correction/matching (so you'll have to get the pros opinion on that one).

Windows runs very well on it and I've had no problems with it.

I can't see changing back to a PC for my uses (not a gamer).This iMac was the best value IMO, compared to the other mac's and macbooks.Even compared to the new mac mini (if you add in the additional cost of a good monitor, bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse, the mini was closing in on the iMac price).I'd recommend this iMac for any deveoper to use as a base system.Power seems more than sufficient add to that the capability to run windows as well and you have one of the best values in a development system I've seen.

All this and lets face it the mac experience is very pleasant, and it doesn't hurt to expand your development into the mac arena.

After one week, I'm already a satified mac user.

I'll update after a year or so of use and abuse.
