(More customer reviews)As the happy owner of an Alfa AWUS036H 1000mW wireless adpater, I purchased the Alfa AWUS036NH 2000mW wireless adpater for my second computer expecting to be ecstatic.

Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that the 2000mW adapter has more difficulty finding, acquiring, and maintaining connections to wireless access points than does the less expensive, supposedly less powerful 1000mW adapter.

Regardless of the combinations of cables, antennas, computers, locations, and updated drivers I tried, the 2000mW adapter consistently found fewer than half as many access points and reported far lower signal strength than did the 1000mW adapter.

Assuming that I'd received a defective item, I contacted a customer service agent at DB Roth who politely handled my call and promptly shipped a replacement adapter.

Unfortunately the second AWUS036NH performed just as badly as the first. Since both 2000mW adapters had exhibited the same behavior and the 1000mW adapter performed perfectly (as has been similarly reported by other Amazon.com customers), I have decided to exchange the 2000mW adapter for the less expensive 1000mW adapter.

DB Roth customer service has been extremely helpful. In spite of a brief misunderstanding over shipping charges, Bianca in customer service deserves very high marks.

Sadly, I can't say the same for the Alfa 2000mW adapter.

Important Driver Installation:
If you get an error while Installing the Drivers press OK, then Exit. Then do the following:

Right-click on your CD Drive and select Explore
For Windows, double-Click on the application file in this folder (the file name atarts with "IS_AP_STA_RT2870......) then follow the installation instructions.
For Mac and Linux open their folder and then run the application.

Or you can got to the manufactures website, then click on "Support" and on the left side click on "Drivers" and download.

(More customer reviews)I rent a house on a lake in the Ozarks of Missouri.The house has no internet connection. The owners of the house live 3 doors down the street, a good 300 feet away.In their house they have a wireless router.From the rental house I could not get a signal on my laptop from their router. To do my work I would walk down the street to the patio at the back of their house and sit there to do my work.That didn't work so well when it rained.

I searched NewEgg, Circuit City, Radio Shack, Best Buy and Amazon.It seemed the greatest volume of reviews and the best reviews was for this unit. So I purchased the unit with the 5dbi antenna and the suction cup mount.It worked great!I thought I might need to sit in the back yard of the house I rent to get a signal even with the new antenna, but no I was able to sit in the kitchen at the table and get a good signal.I mounted the antenna to the window of the kitchen door and added a 15 foot USB extension cable to the antenna and I was able to move from the kitchen to the living room and check my email and web sites.

I highly recommended this Alfe unit.

(More customer reviews)We kinda bought this figuring it was "snake oil".Well, we were wrong...dead wrong!We plugged this into the Vista laptop, Vista found it and we were using it in less than 1 minute, and to our surprise it picked up our neighbor's router 1000 ft down the road and on the other side of his house!We used to get his signal intermittently on the laptop, but with this plugged in with the hi-gain antenna, we get 4 out of 5 bars!This is through tall, thick trees and a motor home!
When the first reviewer (I read)says it got her father in law's signal 1000 feet or yards down the road, she isn't lying!!!

I just put it on my Windows 7 desktop and it works just the same.I just plugged it in, and windows found it, installed drivers and it's fine.

I ALWAYS suggest going online for the latest drivers for any computer hardware, but this one seems to work fine off of Windows Vista and 7's proprietary drivers.

(More customer reviews)I can't believe how well this adapter works. I bought it for my ASUS netbook... the range on the wireless adapter isn't fantastic and won't work in our basement family room. (the batcave) Even my regular laptop only gets one bar in the batcave, but the netbook couldn't even pick up the signal from my router on the main floor. I tried a Belkin extended range wireless usb adapter. It was no better than the wifi adapter in the netbook and the driver install blew away the setup for the internal router in the netbook without warning. After a quick system restore, I repackaged and returned the Belkin and ordered the GSky with panel antenna. I just installed it in less than 5 minutes with no harm to my existing wireless adapter setup and the range is unbelievable. I am getting all bars (excellent signal) in the batcave. I can't wait to try it downtown to see how many signals I can get now. If you have a basement family room... this is the $20 answer to your problem. The range on this thing is fantastic and so is the price.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this item because I live in the country, 800 feet from the main road.My FIL, who lives right on the road, was recently able to get hi speed internet but the cable company denied me stating it was too far a distance to run the cables.I recently purchased a laptop and was able to pick up a weak signal from my FIL's router so I bought this in hopes of boosting the signal. I immediately went from 1 bar to 3 and sometimes even 4.They are also selling this same adapter with a bigger antenna and I am thinking about trying that one out.I have used this with Vista and XP and it works great with both though I did have to download drivers for Vista off website but it was no big deal.I am a mom of 4 and no computer whiz and searched the internet for the best adapter and a decent price and was a little weary about this but it is working great so far.

(More customer reviews)I started looking at wireless adapters because I was intending to build myself a desktop, and my laptop's wireless card was pre WPA and WPA2.The house I had just moved into had a wireless router already, but it was using WPA encryption, with a pre-shared key (PSK).I of course could not connect with my laptop.

Enter this wonderful zyxel adapter.I purchased it because it was usb, and because of the handy extension and usb stick design.Now, after building my desktop I have it plugged into the back of my desktop with the extension.If I want to use my laptop, I simply disconnect the stick from the stand and plug it into my laptop. It couldn't be easier.

As far as the software goes, I don't see anything particularly wrong with the included software. It's not fancy, but it works.The windows wireless manager also works.And this device works flawlessly with Vista.

(More customer reviews)I am using this with an old Celeron Compaq situated on the opposite end of our large home. Our router is the dreaded Actiontec supplied with my Fios service and I wasn't expecting a very good connection or speed.WRONG!After a very quick install the thing just worked!At first all I could get was a "poor" on signal strength and a "weak" signal status.I added a short USB extension to the cable they already supply and sent it up my wall about 7 feet. THAT was all it needed.I now have a "very good" signal and a 'normal' status and am consistently hitting the speed limit of the device. I was very pleasantly surprised.I hope it keeps working.

UPDATE:I have had the dongle for about 2 weeks now and after moving the router about 1 room closer to me I now get an "Excellent" signal strength and it maintains a steady 54 mpbs.More than good enough to stream Hulu with no glitches.It dropped the connection occasionally on startup before moving the router, but now it is right there at all times with no drop offs.It does get hot though.
