(More customer reviews)Simply put, the keyboards IBM puts in its Thinkpad line of notebooks are the best keyboards I've ever used.The keyboard here is just a large-model Thinkpad keyboard done up for the desktop with USB (with a built-in two-port USB hub).As such, it's perfect.I've wanted one of these since I first laid fingertips on a Thinkpad keyboard in 1997.

I'm a 100 word-per-minute touch typist who's seen a lot of keyboards -- I learned to type on a manual typewriter in the early 1970s and spent summers in college earning money as a keypunch operator on teletype-like keyboards.Before this keyboard, I was always on the lookout for a better keyboard.

The throw of the keys on this keyboard is a lot less than that of a standard desktop keyboard.And although the keys feel somewhat "clicky" (good for feedback), they're also relatively quiet (good for neighbors and family).The key layout is just like on the Thinkpad.I use the windows key a lot, but you can rebind one of the ALT keys in your operating system.

The keyboard extends a long way below the keys, just like the bigger Thinkpad's keyboards.I find this provides perfect palm rests for me.

I would've gotten this just for the keyboard.But there's also a trackpoint built in.And my fingers want to use it due to long experience on IBM notebooks. Of all the notebook pointer technologies, this is the only one that works for me.It works better than other company's implementations of track pointers (like on a Toshiba my wife had).Trackpoints don't bounce on planes or trains like the touchpads.Applying "belt and suspenders" caution, IBM also included a touchpad and two sets of mouse buttons (one high and one low); the pair closest to the keyboard are very convenient for dealing with the endless series of dialog boxes in modern applications.

All told, this keyboard helps my typing speed and accuracy.And even though I'm a speedy typist, my typing and mousing is still the bottleneck in most of the work I do on a computer.

(More customer reviews)This Sharp EL-1750P is a pretty great printing calculator for the price.I needed one for my new job and didn't want to spend a lot, so this is what I got.The only thing that I didn't like about this calculator is that to subract one number from another, you have to press the number, then the plus sign, then the other number, then the minus sign.I don't know if this is how all of these types of calculators are or not, since this is the only one like this that I have ever used... but pressing the addition symbol to subract seemed a little weird to me.I am used to it now, but I tend to get frustrated using a regular calculator at home that actually adds everything when you hit the addition sign!Other than that, I am satisfied with the 18.99 I spent on it.

(More customer reviews)Like all USB-powered hard drives, this one comes with a caveat that some old computers do not provide enough power; Toshiba offers a special cable that draws power from 2 USB ports, and their web site even has a special form to ask for this cable. My old computer (also a Toshiba) requires this cable, so I filled out the form but got no response. Two weeks later I tried calling but couldn't get through, so I filled the form again, asking explicitly when I would get the cable. This time they responded promptly as follows:

The cable was not available on Amazon either, but I found one from an ebay store for $5.02 including shipping, and received it within a few days. With the new cable, the hard drive works great; it also works with thesupplied cable when connected to a computer that supplies enough power. But if you have an old computer, don't count on Toshiba for providing the necessary cable.

The specifications require USB 2.0 and Windows or Mac OS, but the drive works well with USB 1.1 and Linux (just for storage, not the backup software).

It's important for people who buy this to make sure that they set the System Preferences so that their video and sound work on their TVs.

First for Video, make sure you choose the the setting you want under ->System Preferences->Displays->Duplicate.I use this so that my TV will display exactly what's on my MacBook Pro.You can keep this unchecked if you want your TV to be an extension to your MacBook Pro.Just drag that second image of the screen meant to be your TV around until you have it the way you like.

Second, for the sound you have to make sure you choose the sound to transmit through the HDMI to your TV instead of through your Macbook Pro speakers.To do that go under ->System Preferences->Sound->Output->Your TV

The owners of the house live 3 doors down the street, a good 300 feet away.In their house they have a wireless router.From the rental house I could not get a signal on my laptop from their router. To do my work I would walk down the street to the patio at the back of their house and sit there to do my work.That didn't work so well when it rained.

I searched NewEgg, Circuit City, Radio Shack, Best Buy and Amazon.It seemed the greatest volume of reviews and the best reviews was for this unit. So I purchased the unit with the 5dbi antenna and the suction cup mount.It worked great!I thought I might need to sit in the back yard of the house I rent to get a signal even with the new antenna, but no I was able to sit in the kitchen at the table and get a good signal.I mounted the antenna to the window of the kitchen door and added a 15 foot USB extension cable to the antenna and I was able to move from the kitchen to the living room and check my email and web sites.

I highly recommended this Alfe unit.

(More customer reviews)Having used scanners from Canon, Xerox, Lanier, Visioneer and Epson, I have a good base from which to compare this scanner.It is excellent!The feed mechanism on this scanner is superior to all prior scanners I have used, including other scanners in this price range.This unit has multiple rollers located in the base and cover that spin at different speeds to pull only one sheet at a time.In other scanners, folded paper - like documents received in an envelop - will double/multi feed.I have not had a single double feed with this unit.I am using it with File Center Pro software to convert more than 1,600 legal files to paperless .pdf format.I was so impressed with this unit that I now have 4 of them in the office, each going at least 8 hours per day with virtually no jams or double feeds.It's worth the money for an office setting where you don't have time for jams and double feeds.

Microsoft LifeCam VX-7000 Win USB Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this webcam to replace an extremely old (circa 1999) Logitech WebCam.Some of the other reviews here indicate that this webcam is junk, but I am very happy with it.Here's a few observations with respect to my own use and some of what I've read in other reviews here.

o Video Quality - I have no problem with it and have yet to have any "freezes".My guess is that freezes are more associated with network latency.I have not tried this over a LAN (very high speed local), but over a cable modem that is 7MBit down, 384k up.You have to take that into account before you blame the webcam.My 384k up is not very fast, for a cable modem, but that's Time Warner for you.Up north (NY/CT area), my peers enjoy 3Mbit upstream!Ugh!

o Software Install Location- Another reviewer brought this up.Who cares?This isn't a 4GB first person shooter, it's a few megs of drivers that mostly need to go under the windows folder anyhow.Non-issue.

o Software Install "eXPerience" - glad to say I had no issues.Install the software, plug in the camera when it asks, and I was good to go.I'm running XP Pro on a 3GHz "single core" (old school? heh) CPU.

o Application Compatibility - It's working great with both Windows Live Messenger and Skype (latest version, 3.8.0.115).

o Built-In Mic - This was a nice surprise for me.I recently purchased a SUB Logitech ClearChat Pro headset, but the built-in mic of this webcam lets me be headset free.I ask everyone I videochat with, can you hear me okay? (Answer: Yes), and do you hear feedback or your voice? (Answer: No).So I am very pleased.Of course, you can set Windows Live Messenger and Skype to use a headset microphone or other device, you don't have to use the built-in mic.

o "The Software" - Okay, the software that comes with the webcam is very basic.But if you want something better, you can get it for free from Microsoft.XP has "Windows Movie Maker" built in, you don't NEED to use the webcam software.Or go install the Windows Media Encoder, that's another free option.I've used both no problem.

In summary, I am very pleased with the performance of the VX-7000.You can record video at 640x480 or 800x600 without problem, and that's pretty good in my opinion.After all, 800x600 is better resolution than DVD video (720x480).If you need more, I don't think you should be looking at a webcam!I think, bottom line, this product is meant for and good at its intended use - video chatting over the internet.I would buy this again.

we got this to replace a cluttered noisy desktop, it has no fans = no noise and is very compact, and at 1920x1080 true HD for the 23" screen, its very productive workspace, very fast.

Problem... It makes such a good media center that there is family competition to use it. It seems to work wireless "n" speeds so Netflix and hulu are stutter-free prefect, its bigger than the kitchen TV. Someone is always using it.

at 1200 bucks it was 2/3 the cost of the system it replaced.

my advice: buy 2 of them.

edit update - we just ordered #2 since the first one never left the Kitchen & Livingroom area, where it will likely live out its useful days so Dads that buy it, set your expectations - Recipies, Netflix, Hulu, Email and facebook, and skype 2 way video ( hi mom! ) youteube, ABC full length shows and Vevo ( Vevo looks amazing )will rule along with the touch screen magazine catalogs and lookbooks at ctndigital. youtube of this touchsmart doing amazing things in flash [...] it wont be much used for real computing - its all family entertainment.

Fellowes Office Suites Large Monitor Riser, Black/Silver Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this riser with a little hesitation due to the scant number of reviews as well as the over-all lack of useful information in the product description. I don't know about the rest of you, but when I'm buying a 'desk organizer', I'd like to know how well it will fill that need. To judge that, one needs dimensions for starters, and not just the extreme edge-to-edge dimensions of the shipping box. I need to know how wide and tall the space beneath the unit and between the legs is (will it fit my media keyboard?). It'd also be helpful to know things like what it's made of, drawer dimensions, capacities (will my favorite mug fit in that fancy cup holder?), etc. They wouldn't be hurting themselves to add specifics about some of the features-- there are some nice ones. At any rate, I'm glad I gave the Fellowes Office Suites Large Monitor Riser a try. As for the information I wish I had, I'll try to include it here (*some detailed dimensions included at the end of the review).
The unit is well constructed of mostly plastic. It is completely stable on the desktop with nice rubber feet that grip very well. The leg mechanisms are metal, but all else is a rigid black (charcoal grey, really) and silver plastic. The color seems to be injection molded (?) -- it is colored plastic, not painted on. The drawer is sized to hold standard 8.5 x 11 sheets, and has sections for pens/ pencils as well as sticky notes (2 x 2 - 2 x 2.5 inches sticky notes). The drawer holds content weight well until it is about 2/3 of the way out. From there, it feels likely to break without support. The drawer is shaped such that a narrow wing of plastic on each side slides into slots on the riser. The drawer slides in and out smoothly, doesn't bind up, has little side to side movement (until about that 2/3 mark), and has an easy to grab handle on the front. The top surface of the riser has two CD pockets (5 5/8 x 3 7/8 x 1 3/4 inch deep). One can be covered with an included flat cover, the other has the cup/ mug holder insert. The cup holder is 3 3/8 inch top diameter, 3 1/4 inch bottom diameter. The cover and cup holder can go on either side as the CD pockets are identically sized, and you can have the handle side of the cup holder face either way as well. If you actually still actively use CDs on your computer, each pocket will hold 8 single CD cases -- no wide slot for double disc cases.
I have the unit lowered all the way down, but tried it halfway and fully extended: fully loaded. Stability was very good, even with the legs fully extended. The leg extension mechanism works by sliding the foot outward about 1/4 inch, which 'unlocks' it. Just pull the leg out to the desired height, then 'lock' the legs by returning them to vertical. As I mentioned above, the full leg mechanism is metal. The legs 'lock' into place solidly, and seem unlikely to be accidentally unlocked except through a strong jolt. There are 4 stops betweenthe lowest and highest positions. At full extension, the surface sits 6 1/2 inches off the desktop, with 4 7/8 inches of space beneath. At the lowest setting, there is 2 3/8 inches of 'headroom' beneath the riser (enough for my keyboard with it's feet extended).
My only complaint is that I would have appreciated a second $.03 flat plastic cover to have the option of a fully flush surface. I have contacted Fellowes about getting another, but have yet to hear an answer on it. Regardless of that outcome, it is an easy 5-Star recommendation for home or office use. The unit coordinates nicely with it's cohorts, has a sleek and stylish design, quality construction, thoughtful features, and yes, it holds my favorite mug!

(More customer reviews)After 3+ months of great use of the VH242H, I cam home to find a problem that seems to be affecting/afflicting several other reviewers of this monitor - a flickering gray screen that does not seem to abate. I'll be hitting up ASUS service in the next few days, and will update this review or add comments as things progress.

Up until now, I've been very happy with this monitor and would certainly have given it 4 stars. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 star because it did so well. I might downgrade it depending on how ASUS service deals with this monitor.

[UPDATE 12/21/09]

Well, the monitor has gone to the ASUS repair facility and returned to me (with about a 2-week lag, and not the best online information regarding whether the monitor had been shipped or not), and it worked right out of the box.

And then it didn't. After putting my MacBook Pro to sleep and waking it up I found... the flickering BLACK screen of death. After jiggling, I was able to get the monitor working, but this happens now every time I either put the computer to sleep or unhook the monitor cable (which connects to a DisplayPort adapter). I've updated the video; more to follow soon.

(More customer reviews)Wow! I had a 3 year old Microsoft mouse that worked great, but the USB transceiver was a real pain mainly because of the length of the thing. I broke one of my USB ports when I accidentally banged into the thing one day and on a laptop one can ill afford to lose a USB connector right?

Anyway, the transceiver on this unit is tiny, it only sticks out maybe a 1/4 of an inch so there's no probability of you damaging your machine by accident. And, it is extremely responsive, even more than the older design. The drivers loaded automatically in Windows 7 and I'm back in bidness. Both left and right buttons work as they should, and the scroll is perfect. Battery life is extended too with an On/Off switch. Works on any surface, the laptop frame, the couch, your jeans!

This purchase BTW was a necessity because of the crappy touch-pad on my new Asus K52jr-4, which was so erratic as to make the laptop virtually unusable. I see a lot of complaints on the web about this, but anyway I highly recommend this mouse, especially at the price which is about 1/2 of an equivalent Logitech device.
