TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-633GR (Piano Black) Review

TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-633GR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Final verdict on the Trendnet TEW-633GR and its routing problem.(See Final Update below for the end results.)

Summary:When I connect my systems (Red Hat, Windows, Palm OS, OS/2 (Warp/Server)), PS2, etc to the Internet using this router, I'm unable to reach various Internet addresses.Doing a trace route finds the packets go so far and then get "Destination Network Unreachable."

NOTE:This also occurs from the router's administration page's ping page not just from various machines on the network.

The problem does NOT occur under two circumstances.

1) I connect a system directly to my Comcast cable modem.
2) I use my Linksys router (WRT54G or WRT600N).

Hook the Trendnet back up and the problem returns 100% of the time.

After calling Trendnet support, I began to become hopeful in finding a solution.Level one sent me almost immediately to level two, who called me back and worked through various possibilities.Follow-up phone calls from level two, though, required I contact them.

During the last session level two agreed something "interesting" was going on for two reasons.

1)They were unable to ping to these sites from their location using DSL.Their trace routes failed at the same point.
2) They connected into my router and verified mine failed by using the ping feature under Administration.

NOTE:I'm avoiding using the term web site, as I use various Internet protocols into these sites (e.g. sftp, ssh, smtp, dns, imcp, and yes http).

They gave me a choice to send them the unit or send it back to Amazon.com for a refund.I decided this unit is still my first choice as a replacement for the Linksys.Getting a RMA number, I send the unit back. This is where we are today.Trendnet has the unit (USPS tracking) but has yet to contact me.

The TEW-633GR works great otherwise and the gigabit wired interfaces do improve system to system speed for various protocols (e.g. ftp, sftp, large http requests, etc.).

Can I recommend it to you?If the Internet addresses you try to reach doesn't hit this routing issue the answer is yes!But I'm not sure what Internet addresses have problems with this router. You might go a lifetime without hitting this problem or one day you need to connect to your new employer's site and can't.Fortunately, Trendnet does seem interested in solving this issue.

I'll update this review as I get more information. The verdict is still out and hopefully this router will get a five by five rating and be with me for a very long time.

Final update:

According to the router's developers the problem is with the ATHEROS chip set they use.

I'm using Comcast and tried both a RCA and Motorola modem. We also tried DOCSIS 1.1 and 2.0 before I ended up returning the router.Trendnet said they are ** NOT ** going to fix the issue for a couple of reasons.

(1) They don't have cable access at their headquarters. They have T-1 and DSL.
(2) They don't believe cable users are a large percentage of their business.
(3) We agreed not all cable users will see this issue.Yet, those who do will be out of luck, period.

I'm now using a Linksys WRT600N with a Broadband chipset with no routing issues.I returned the Trendnet TEW-633GR to Amazon.com because of this design / software defect (per Trendnet assessment).

Sonnett Technologies G54-PCI Aria Extreme Wireless PCI Card (54 Mbps) Review

Sonnett Technologies G54-PCI Aria Extreme Wireless PCI Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So you want wireless Internet for your home? This is what you need. This card, a wireless router and either a subscribed DSL or cable connection (modem usually provided by your Internet company).

Unless you want to connect solely to your PDA and cellphone, don't get a bluetooth adapter (I was hoping that would be the cheap alternative to get me hooked up, but it's not). You have to have the two pieces of hardware to make it work -- the pci card and the router.

I've been a PC girl all my life, but recently bought an Ibook. I also bought an airport express base station with itunes so that I could have my Ibook online at the same time as my PC, but you could buy any wireless router. However, the aiport base is so easy to use, I highly recommend getting one, takes the headache out of configuring your wireless and allows you to play your stereo in any room of your home (a neat perk). You basically just attach your Internet ethernet cable into it, then plug it into any wall socket and it's set. Even though it's an apple router, it works just as easily with a PC. It's brilliant.

I did a lot of reading to try to figure out a compatible format that would allow both my PC and Ibook to get online and found this. The other reviews are right, this is the easiest set up of wireless imaginable. And the beauty of it is that it works just as efficiently on a PC (I own a Dell Dimension) as it does on a Mac.

Before you install this card though, be sure to drop by http://www.sonnettech.com/ downloads and get the Aria extreme PCI Windows Utility & Driver -- just have it unzipped in a new file folder on your desktop, ready for installation. For some reason the company doesn't ship a CD, and while Windows XP is automated for almost every product out there, for this one, you need to do a bit of legwork by getting the download at the website. So you'll have to be attached to your Internet before you install this card to get the download first.

Next, open your PC, install the card in any open PCI slot, close the computer back up, attach the attena, tilt it vertically up, and then reboot your computer. XP will give you a prompt to install ... just ignore this and close out. Once you're booted up, double click the "setup" file from the aria download and it will install everything for you.

Unhook your Internet cable (you only need to unplug the part that would go into your PC normally), plug it into your wireless router and within minutes it will detect your signal. All set up for your PC. If you are encountering trouble with the signal .. go down to your taskbar.. you'll see a green icon next to your clock, bottom right, double click on it and go into the configuration tab. Mid-way down you'll see something that says Network name, with a pulldown menu. For me, because I'm using an apple router, I chose "apple network" and immediately got "excellent" connection. Experiment with the choices and pick the signal that gives you "excellent."

Now this may sound more complicated than it is. I wrote out the step by step instructions in case you ran into problems, but if your installation was anything like mine, it'll take you about 10 minutes at most to get back online and WIRELESS!

As for the card itself, the speed is stunning. I am impressed that the Internet can go much faster than I already had with a straight cable modem connection.

All in all, this is an excellent solution to going wireless. I highly recommend it, and the airport base, to get you wireless-ed in your home.

Netgear WNHDEB111-100NAS Wireless N Access Point Review

Netgear WNHDEB111-100NAS Wireless N Access Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this kit to send HD video from my computer to my TV media device. It has adequate bandwidth and worked out of the box, but I do not get a strong signal from the main floor to the basement of my house, a distance of about 25 feet. There are a couple of walls as well as the floor, and the basement ceiling has metal duct work and pipes above the plasterboard, so I am probably lucky to penetrate all that. I used a laptop to indicate wireless signal strength, and spent a couple of hours orienting each device for the best signal. Now I get a level that varies from 50% to 70%, and that works reliably for HD at 720p. I have not been able to send 1080i over the link without momentary stops and starts in the audio and video; however the link never breaks connection and never needs resetting. It seems to just limit the bandwidth as the signal strength goes lower.

I bought a third WNHDE 111 to connect to another computer, and than link has never been interrupted since I installed it over a month ago. It has always worked well. I had previously used a Linksys G router that was interrupted once or twice a day, and it had to be reinstated manually using the "repair" function in the Windows wireless software. It was my wife's computer in the kitchen, so I had to fix it!

I still have the wireless G system up, and it works well around the house with a third computer, a laptop, but it never gave a reliable signal for my wife's computer in the kitchen; and it would not carry the HD video for the TV. I also use that old G router to connect the ethernet from my main computer to the WNHDE 111.

I recommend this device if you don't have too many walls and floors to penetrate. I am a retired electronics engineer, and I assure everyone that the higher the frequency, the poorer the penetration, but the more bandwidth and the more freedom from interference.

Update:After 7 months, I have better results. With some tweaking of the settings (set the Channel Width to 20 MHz, turn off the "Broadcast SSID", and lower Beacon Period to 50 msec) I can now stream 25 Mbps HD video through all the walls. I think the main problem was that the auto 20/40 Channel Width was trying to run at 40 and was not successful, sometimes switching between 20 and 40. When I reduced the channel width, I got an increase in signal strength. I can now stream 1080i HD for hours without any problem.

Jim

Cisco-Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this product connected to my directv hd receiver to download VOD content. If the installation software is not able to detect the device during the installation process, then follow these steps (I had to perform these steps when I called Linksys for assistance. I wish they had just documented the steps instead):

1. Quit out of the installation software (keep the adapter connected to your pc)

2. Assign a static IP to your pc (if you do not know how to do this, then call Linksys or google it). The static ip settings should be:
ip: 192.168.1.50
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
leave dns settings as is

3. Open up your browser and type http://192.168.1.250 in the address bar. You will now see a log in page

4. Log in with admin/admin

5. Now assign a static IP to the adapter
ip: 192.168.1.250
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1

6. Now go to the wireless settings tab and enter in your SSID and WEP/WPA Key. Make sure you select the correct authentication type

7. You will now need to reboot the adapter (it will ask you to do so)

8. Once the device is back up, go back to the http://192.168.1.250 page and log back in. Double-check to make sure your settings were entered in correctly. The wireless light should light up on your adapter.

Tip: Before you connect it to your console/receiver, you can test to make sure the adapter can connect to the internet. Switch off your wireless connection on your pc/laptop and connect the adapter to your pc via the ethernet port. Try accessing the internet and if you can, then the adapter is all set.

Good luck.
p.s. the main reason I detailed out the steps for the "advanced setup" is so that people know that it is still a straight-forward process, so no need to be afraid if you won't have the plug-and-play experience.

another tip. if you are still having issues, then try changing the channel on your router (although you should not have to if all your other wireless devices are working well on that channel).

Cisco-Valet Wireless Router Review

Cisco-Valet Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the Valet Plus to replace a Linksys G router that occasionally lost signal and that did not offer reliable coverage throughout my (not very big) apartment.Connecting 2 computers went smoothly, and range was definitely improved.Connecting 3rd computer produced error message but seemed to work anyway - attempting to add wireless Canon printer to the network caused another error message and connection failed.Called Cisco Support and was told, basically, that they don't fix printer problems; I insisted that was nonsense, since the product is sold as a "no-brainer" wireless solution and they had to help make it work. During conversation with service rep, the printer suddenly did recognize the Valet Plus (or vice-versa) and started working.Next day, connected iPhone successfully but printing failed again. This time, Customer Support dug a little deeper and checked the settings on the router. Then they told me I had to get a better driver from Canon since the router will only work with printers enabled for WPA/WPA2 security. When I asked why that wasn't listed on the box or anywhere else as a technical requirement for the product, the person had no answer - kept repeating that Cisco used "advanced" technology. After that useless call, I tinkered with the printer LAN settings and tried getting it to accept WPA (rather than WPA2) as security protocol.I was able to print again, but don't have confidence the problem is solved for good.So I have to choose whether to send back the Valet Plus or keep it and hope it works, accepting that I may have difficulty and that Cisco Support is pretty much not supportive at all.Be warned that "plug and play" may not be your experience with this item.

UPDATE: It seems that Cisco takes customer reactions pretty seriously. After posting this review and responding to a Cisco survey in the same vein, I got an email and phone call from a higher-up in the company's support area.He explained that Cisco has to be careful about offering technical advice about other company's products (there are liability issues) but agreed that I should not have been given that unequivocal, unhelpful answer. And the Valet Plus has been working well - haven't had to reset it or fiddle with AirPort settings on computers.Have printed successfully a couple of times, too, so hoping for the best.

I purchased the WUSB600N wireless network adaptor to support my 5.5 year old Sony Pentium 4.The WUSB600N is the size of a large thumb drive and it uses a USB connection on one end.It comes with a USB stand for use with desktops but can also be connected directly to laptops.

Thus far, the unit has worked great but . . . I did not install the unit as instructed by the directions.Having had problems with Linksys software on a previous wireless card, I took a hint from another reviewer and I hooked it up and used the Windows XP install hardware utility to install the unit.Just use the driver off the Linksys install CD.I use the XP wireless network connection to manage it.The Verizon wireless G router is on the second floor and I use this in the basement with no connectivity problems.

I think the WUSB600N is great, the small size takes up almost no space on my desk and the USB format means I can swap it between machines.I am completely satisfied and recommend it - with the installation caveat.

When I received the Belkin Wireless N+ Router, I set it up it right in front of a window in my house. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CEYYFK/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title)Setup was super easy and I turned on 802.11b/g/n to all transmit/receive at the same time.I also purchased a Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n USB Adapter (Black) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CF2TYC/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title) and installed it in my brand new Dell laptop. The combination worked flawlessly, setup was super easy, and the security was a snap to set up.

I received at least four lights all over our one story house including 80' away through a number of walls. My new laptop's built-in N-card/antenna did not work nearly as well as the Belkin N+ adapter.

I took the laptop and the Belkin N+ Adapter for a walk while keeping the window and router in my line of sight. At approximately 325' from the router, I still had full signal strength!I finally lost the signal about 380' feet from the router.

I also tried the Belkin adapter with a 7-year old, 512Mb ram HP laptop and got similar results - full signal at 325'.

I bought this wireless card because my old wireless card that was working fine on windows xp was not compatible. I bought a new dell that had Windows 7 professional 64 bit. Surprisingly, not a lot of wireless cards would say whether they're Windows 7 compatible. I read the box on this unit and said it worked on Vista 64 bit. Once at home, i disregarded the instructions and installed the card first. Upon bootup, Windows 7 had already detected and properly installed the wireless card. It worked seamlessly. Once installed, Windows 7 Update founded a more update driver for the card.

I'll post updates if i notice anything odd about this card. At this moment, I'm getting a Fair Connection with my router. The router is located at the other end of the hallway.

The price is another story...yes it's very over price.

Product Description:
The Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N PCI Adapter with Dual-Band adds wireless connectivity to your desktop computer.Install it into an available slot in your computer, and enjoy great high-speed wireless network access without running wires. The Wireless-N PCI Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n).By overlaying the signals of multiple radios for each band, Wireless-N's "Multiple In, Multiple Out" (MIMO) technology is designed to multiply the effective data rate.Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area. The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G.

D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter Review

I don't have much to write about this great product except to say that it works 110% to the good, has no obvious faults or problems, achieves close to 300Mb/s speed without tweaking, fiddling around, or special configuration, and overall is not to be feared as a PCI-Express network adapter. I was using its PCI equivalent, the DWA-552 "N" Adapter for almost 2 months with similar success, and was forced to start using the PCI-Express variety because I started using twin EVGA GTX-285 video cards in the PC, and lost the PCI slot in the process. This is an install it, and forget it system, and works 100% seamlessly with any Vista 64-bit system. I've never booted the computer and not had wifi-it just simply works every time, without fail, no questions asked!

There's a green activity light on the back of the device that blinks off, and on whenever the signal is being accessed, which is 100% of the time, so it's blinking a lot but it's not annoying at all. The three "antenna" that stick out the back of the unit are flexible and can point up at a 45-degree angle to acquire the signal better. The adapter is small, only weighs a few grams, certainly less than 4-ounces or so, and takes up very little space in the PCI cavity of the computer, a plus.

I just used the drivers off the original CD ROM, never even bothered with the D-Link web site and the "latest drivers" which I guess should be done at some point, but I'm having zero problems with the adapter so I've been reluctant to test fate and change a thing at this point.

That's about it for my review of this product. It works, it's simple to work with, install, there is no maintenance or trickery needed to get it functioning 100% with a Vista 64-bit system, so I recommend it highly and give it my 5-Stars Seal of Approval: ***** !

I connected it and Windows 7 installed the drivers automatically. I'm using a Linksys 802.11g router. I have had it for about three weeks and haven't had a problem, nor do I expect to have one.
