(More customer reviews)I got this DIGISTOR Blu-Ray burner for my HD videos. I am a semi-professional videographer and I record some of my shoots/subjects/videos in High-Definition. At one point earlier this year, I realized that burning to DVDs just will not be enough for HD content - the 4-something gigabytes just won't cut it.

I decided to get DIGISTOR's blu-ray burner because I got one of their their DVD burners as well - External USB 2.0 Powered 8x DVD Burner by DIGISTOR - and I saw from their website -[...]/Blu-ray-burner - that they had a similarly designed Blu-Ray burner.

The reason I was so happy with the DVD burner was that it did not need a power cord for it. I am happy to say that this Blu-Ray burner is the same - no power cord. I use it for my HD video editing, connected to my PC. I also bring it around, it is very light and portable, on my shoots should there be a need to burn output onsite.

It's plug-and-play, no need for drivers - Vista and Windows 7 supports blu-ray natively. And I have yet to encounter a bad burn on this drive. Something to do with it's battery powered operation, but I also made sure it has enough power for burning, I got the dual USB accessory.

I'm very happy with the product.

Fortunately, I found DIGISTOR's solution. It's actually a Panasonic slot-load blu-ray burner designed for laptops, but the 5.25 casing and circuitry solution is all DIGISTOR.

It work's like a charm when I replaced my aging DVD burner -- I transplanted that off an old system when I built my new Intel i7 quad core PC. Now my new system is sporting a super sleek slot-loading Blu-ray burner courtesy of DIGISTOR.

Been using it for 4 months now, on a Windows 7 OS. No issues, no bad burns so far.

I also use DIGISTOR 25GB BD-R Media, Silver Surface Disc (25 pack) for my back up needs.

This one was definitely a good buy.

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive to burn video blu-ray discs and watch movies.This is the best drive I have seen on the market at this point in time.It seems to be compatible with all discs (no coasters yet).The drive is quiet, easy to install (depends on your PC and knowledge of installing hardware), and easy to set up.The software to burn and watch movies is included.Mine came with a free BD-R to get started.Just make sure your PC has the correct hardware to handle HD or this drive is not for you.

Depending what video editing software you have, after the burning the video to the disc, the video quality is amazing!All of my discs work on my stand- alone player and my PS3 slim.This drive won't let you down!

(More customer reviews)If you're shopping around for BD-ROM drives, you should be aware that the software required to play bluray movies can cost as much as the drive itself.It's therefore pretty crucial to find a drive which includes some software if you're on a budget.Keywords in the product description like "BULK" or "OEM" can indicate that software may not be included, so bear that in mind when choosing. The amazon page for this product does not give details on the included software, so I took a chance.

I'm relieved to report that this drive comes in a retail box which includes four screws and PowerDVD 9 software.I had been tracking prices of BD-ROMs on this and other sites for about a year, and at the time of purchase this was the least expensive option for a BD-ROM with software that I had ever seen.

As for the quality of the PowerDVD 9 software, I'm sure you can get an earful from its product page.For my purposes, it is able to play blurays, and I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.A notable difference between PowerDVD 9 and 10 is that only 10 will support 3D movies.If you're interested in watching 3D movies with this drive, know that you'll have to shell out some extra money for the upgraded software.Of course, if you're a 3D movie enthusiast, you're probably used to shelling out extra money.

Please note that a SATA cable is NOT included.Go ahead and add it to your cart now; you won't want to wait another week for amazon to ship it, nor will you want to shell out twenty bucks at Best Buy for one.I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but also make sure your power supply has available SATA power cables and your motherboard has available SATA slots.

I can't really review the comparative performance of this drive verses other drives.I expect higher speeds are more useful when it comes to ripping blurays or using data BDs, but the 4x speed is sufficient to play movies.The mild imperfections I observe when watching movies (more to the sound than the video) I'm more willing to attribute to my modest supporting cast (a 1.8 GHz Core2Duo, Radeon HD 3450, for reference).

Anyway, five stars for meeting my expectations of the drive, coming with software, and VALUE!

(More customer reviews)for $100 this is a great Blu-Ray reading and DVD-burning slim portable drive.
It will power itself right off of USB so you don't need any other connectors.I've seen much more expensive drives from lenovo or HP that are just as nice and don't do blu-ray.

My only complaint is more about blu-ray itself.First you need to purchase some sort of software (cyberlink or Intervideo WinDVD) but specifically a version that supports blu-ray, which is a little bit more expensive as nothing comes with the drive that can play blu-ray out of the box.Additionally, you will need a fairly recent generation computer to play the blu-ray disks effectively.I've used it on a machine with a GMA965 but the video is a bit choppy, however on my T500 with the Discrete Radeon HD card that will switch down to the Intel 4 series chip when not busy.Playing blu-ray disks always pounds on the radeon, anything less than a Radeon HD or very new 9 series nVidia will probably have a hard time, or might not even play a blu-ray disk at all.So make sure you have something that can play the disks.

In all honesty, I will probably replace my computer before I replace this drive as it is a really useful and versatile optical drive

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive as a 2nd drive in my computer, with the added ability to play Blu-ray discs. For the price it really can't be beat, especially since it includes good software that costs retail almost as much as the drive. It's also a very quiet drive. So far it plays everything I stick in it, with no problems. The picture on my new 23" HP 1080p monitor is drop-dead gorgeous and very stable. You do need a decent video card to use this drive, but the one that came with my new HP has a dedicated 512 mb of memory and works fine. It also has an HDMI output.

The only minus I can say about the BD drive is that it came with an SATA cable, but no power conversion adapter.

HP TouchSmart IQ846 Desktop PC Review

(More customer reviews)My 2 year old PC suddenly failed last week. I went looking for a replacement. I was surprised to see that "All in One" desktops were now made by most of the name brand companies. This HP was very impressive.
I loaded all of the applications that were running on my old PC (Running Vista 32 bit). The only thing that did not work was the driver for my Canon network attached printer. I was easily able to obtain the correct 64 bit Vista driver from Canon. To my surprise both the 32 and 64 bit application software programs are running with no problems. I have not had occasion to use the Blue Ray but the Touch Smart feature is great. All of my other applications have been running with no problems. In fact the old PC hung and crashed occasional this one has not.
The multimedia and the Digital TV is excellent. I have several new high end HD TVs and the TV feature (connected to an antenna)on this is as good as any of them.
This is the first time I have seen built in speakers that are usable, in fact they are quiet good.
The unit is basically a laptop inside. So there is some performance hit as opposed to a normal desktop. The advantage is that there is no noise, power consumption and heat generation is very low and and very little external cabling is required.
Although I have only had this for 1 week, so far it has been very impressive and I have found the hardware and software has been solid.
The display, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard are all well designed and a pleasure to use.
UPDATE to original review
Althought the original review is still true the computer failed after 2 weeks. HP service wanted me to send it to them with a several week turn around. I took it back to the store where I purchased it and replaced it with a SONY VAIO which also works very well.The folks at the store said HP reliability was good and mine was not the norm.

Note it's LightScribe capable. I had no idea when I bought it. (Pleasant Surprise).

The software is Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 (on a BlueRay disk), along with a number of other pieces of Cyberlink software (Advisor, LabelPrint, MediaShow 4, Power2Go, PowerBackup, PowerProducer and YouCam) After installation, the software does allow for playing BlueRay movies (tested with Quantum of Solace).

It also came with a SATA cable, 4 case screws and a MOLEX to SATA power converter cable, and an actual manual. For OEM it's a very complete package.

I've only had it for two days, connected to Windows 7 64 bit OS.

This is perfect of a student in a dorm with limited space.It would work great as a television and a computer. I have always been impressed with Sony and Microsoft, but the marriage of their latest products has proved to be a giant leap forward for consumers.
