2.5" To 3.5" Ssd/sata Convert Review

2.5' To 3.5' Ssd/sata Convert
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some sites' reviewers are complaining this is overpriced.True you can get 2.5" to 3.5" drive rails quite easily for only a couple bucks. The point of this product, however, is that it makes the 2.5" drive FIT into SATA backplanes and drive bays made to directly slide/hot-swap 3.5" drives. For this product's concept, I give it 5 stars.

Unfortunately, its construction is rather cheap. It consistently got jammed in one of my drive bays.In general, I am comparing to VelociRaptor HLFS "backplane" ice packs which don't have any issues and are almost too high of quality.Because of the construction and occasional fit issues, I knock it down to 4 stars.

Finally, the ventilation is very poor. When used with SSDs, it is fine, but with a normal laptop hard drive (I used a single platter 7200 RPM), and the drive got extremely hot. Thus, I give it 3 stars net.

If you REALLY need a good backplane adapter for hard drives, I'm afraid the only good ones come with the WD VelociRaptors which cost $150+.For SSDs, though, it is adequate. Also, note that Icy Dock has a newer, cheaper/simpler product for SSDs that I have not used.

Product Description:
ICY DOCKs MB882 series can convert most of 2.5 SATA and SSD hard drive into a 3.5 SATA drive. It has enough ventilation to keep the 2.5 drive cool and can protect your drive. Installing a 2.5 drive requires no screws or tool whatsoever. Whether you use a SATA or SSD drive, you will maintain the transfer speed while using this case. With this converter, mounting a 2.5 drive into a desktop will be simple without having to purchase any special attachments or systems, allowing more convenience in recovering data from laptops or OS boot up onto a desktop. It is very convenient for gamers and power users who expect SSD speed on their home/ office computers. Mostly, it is designed to fit into most common PC cases, 3.5 HDD duplicator, 3.5 SATA HDD enclosure, mobile rack, and backplane modules without having to purchase any attachments for the 2.5 drives. This state-of-the-art case will revolutionize the way 2.5 drives are presently used.

LG Electronics 10X Internal SATA Blu-ray Disc Rewriter WH10LS30 (Black) Review

LG Electronics 10X Internal SATA Blu-ray Disc Rewriter WH10LS30

I bought this drive to burn video blu-ray discs and watch movies. This is the best drive I have seen on the market at this point in time.It seems to be compatible with all discs (no coasters yet). The drive is quiet, easy to install (depends on your PC and knowledge of installing hardware), and easy to set up.The software to burn and watch movies is included.Mine came with a free BD-R to get started.Just make sure your PC has the correct hardware to handle HD or this drive is not for you.

Depending what video editing software you have, after the burning the video to the disc, the video quality is amazing! All of my discs work on my stand- alone player and my PS3 slim. This drive won't let you down!

Scythe Bay Rafter 2.5 or 3.5 hard drive conversion to 5.25 bay Review

Scythe Bay Rafter 2.5 or 3.5 hard drive conversion to 5.25 bay
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for the best way to mount my 3 OCZ Vertex RAID drives in a 5.25" bay to free up my 3.5" internal bays and give my case a nice clean look. This Scythe Bay Rafter is what I found and I am completely impressed with the way it performs. It includes all 12 screws to mount the SSD drives as well as screws to mount the plastic rafter in the 5.25" bay if needed. If you want to give your case a nice clean professional look and increase air flow performance in your case this item works great. The only thing that I found that may give some users trouble is if you use the standard inline sata power plugs, it may create a tight fit with 3 plugged in.I used molex to (2) sata power adapters which are not inline at the plug and that works great. You will also want to use straight sata cables for at least the top two sata drives.A right angle cable will work fine for the bottom SSD.

Intel 80 GB X25M Mainstream MLC 2.5 Inch SATA II Solid State Drive (SSD) Review

Intel 80 GB X25M Mainstream MLC 2.5 Inch SATA II Solid State Drive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this drive to go in my Lenovo Ideapad U330.The performance is awesome. The drive is silent since there's no moving parts.Using a SSD also decrease the heat output and energy usage also. The computer is much cooler and uses less energy than before, thus longer battery life. Before this, I had also purchased an OCZ Core 64GB SSD to use in my new Lenovo at $280.That drive, the OCZ Core, was horrible, the performance on HD Tach was 130MB/sec which is good, but it wasn't the benchmark performance that was bad, it was real world use.To use the OCZ drive as a primary OS drive was impossible. It was plague with stops and stutters. Most of the good reviews about how SSD was so fast are from users using an SLC (single level cell) drive.Usually an OCZ SSD or a G.Skill SSD in a sivler case both of which are a rebranded Samsung drive.
This Intel drive is a MLC (multi level cell) drive but intel developed a new technology on how the drive is read and write so it does not suffer from stutters like other MLC drive. This drive performance on HD Tach was equivalent to a RAID (0): SATA WD Raptor 74GB drive at 10,000 rpm.The benchmark on the Intel: Burst speed: 194.4 MB/sec, Average read: 114.3 MB/sec, Random Access: 0.3ms.The benchmark on the Raptor was Burst speed: 197.9 MB/sec, Average read: 110.6 MB/sec and Random Access: 8.6ms.As you can see this drive improves laptop performace by quite a bit.Worth every penny.

Product Description:
The future of computer storage is here! With the Intel X-25M Mainstream SATA Solid State Drive, you'll experience dramatically faster disk performance and greater durability than traditional hard drives. Since it uses NAND flash memory instead of spinning platters for storage, there's no waiting for disks to spin up, and there are no moving parts to worry about breaking down.

Experience blazing fast disk performance with the X-25M drive.

A New Kind of Storage for Faster Data Access
The X-25M is an SATA hard drive with a capacity of 80 GB in a 2.5-inch form factor that will work anywhere a regular 2.5-inch hard drive does, such as in notebook computers and external enclosures.
But don't think that the X-25M is your normal drive. Instead of using spinning platters like traditional hard drives, the X-25M is a Solid State Drive (SSD) and uses flash memory for storage, giving you dramatically faster data access. If you need more disk space, the X-25M also comes in a 160 GB version.
Performs Even Faster than Other Solid State Drives
Intel has been making memory chips for decades, and this experience is on clear display with the X-25M drive. This drive uses Intel's Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND Flash Memory that delivers better performance than other SSDs thanks to an advanced architecture and technologies such as Native Command Queuing, which enables up to 32 simultaneous operations. The result is sustained sequential read speeds of up to 250 MBps, sustained sequential write speeds of up to 70 MBps, and a read latency of just 85 microseconds.
And by using the SATA interface that offers data throughput of up to 3.0 Gbps, you can duly take advantage of all the speed. What all this means for you is that applications launch instantaneously, files copy in less time, and your overall productivity is significantly increased.
Higher Reliability and Silent Operation
Compared to traditional hard drives, the X-25M is both faster and more durable. Since it doesn't have spinning disks or writing heads, there are fewer parts to fail. It is also less susceptible to vibrations and shock and is completely silent. The X-25M is rated at 1.2 million hours mean time before failure (MTBF) for superb reliability.
Lower Power Consumption is Good for the Environment
The X-25M also consumes far less power than traditional drives, which saves you money and makes it an environmentally friendly choice. When installed in a laptop, you'll experience better battery life, so you can work longer on those cross-country plane trips. Additionally, the drive is certified RoHS compliant for its use of non-hazardous materials.
The Intel X-25M Mainstream SATA Solid State Drive supports Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) commands as well as additional SSD monitoring. It is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

The X-25M has no moving parts for faster and more reliable performance.

The shiny new Mac Pro Intel quad core sitting on my floor that just killed my saving account seemed a little slower than I had anticipated...a quick RAM boost to 3gb was all it needed. Now it acts like the pro machine I expected, handling aperture, lightroom, photoshop, etc with ease.

This is the 'right' type of RAM with the heatsinks, fully buffered, etc. that are needed for the mac pro. It actually didn't look too different than the RAM chips pre-installed by apple. I've purchased a lot of Kingston RAM upgrades over the years, never had a problem. Easy to install on your own, and will save you $$ over the apple store.

AppleCare Protection Plan - Mac Pro Review

AppleCare Protection Plan - Mac Pro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For someone who has ALWAYS rejected the notion of purchasing an 'extended warranty' on ANY product purchase as just another cynical method for American corporations to wring every possible cent they can from us as consumers, I must IN THIS CASE ONLY, urge anyone considering the purchase of an Apple laptop or one of Apple's overly priced Mac 'Pro' workstations purchase the Apple'Care' extended warranty. (I am NOT some 'Leftie' anti-corporation/conspiracy theory nut-case! I simply believe that if I purchase a brand new, EXPENSIVE piece of technology - be it a motorcar, a refrigerator, a digital SLR, a flat screen teevee OR an 'insanely kewl' Apple Product [god-Steve's own description of ALL his groovy Apple Products!] - then it is reasonable to expect these 'quality' products last longer than 60,000 miles or 1 year! Consider all the blah-blah about 'quality American products' we are berated with these days.)

Why Apple'Care'?
Consider this: I purchased a Mac 'Pro' quad-core workstation a couple of years ago. Within less than 9 months I began experiencing MULTIPLE hardware problems. Of course, when I took this gift from the gods back to an Apple Store - and by way of many, many lengthy conversations with 'product specialists' @ AppleCare - the 'geniuses' (at the Apple Store's 'Genius Bar'), and the technicians in the Apple Store who supposedly 'worked on' my Mac 'Pro' all advised me 'it's a software issue'. Yep. You betcha! And that most-likely 'it's a THIRD PARTY software issue'. You know, buggy code like that built into products dumped on the market by the likes of Adobe... (Say what?!)
The 'geniuses' solution to my (perceived) problems? 'Archive and Re-Install!' They could NEVER find 'a problem' running their tip top diagnostic software (ASD + they even 'beat it up' with an 'intense' chess game software title the 'geniuses' additionally-use when making an uber effort to find the chink in either hardware or software and are unable to locate it by simply looping ASD for 24 hours or longer). If anyone has ever had to endure the gauntlet of 'Archive and Re-Install' you know that this option is the absolute LAST DITCH EFFORT one considers in order to make an OS play nicely once again with other software written SPECIFICALLY FOR that OS! (C'mon Apple! What's with all this smugness about how stable, how sophisticated, how kewl the Mac OS is?)

Well, long story short, I have the great fortune of being friends with a certified Apple technician; and unlike the 'geniuses' at the Apple Stores who just run software tests (because IT COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE A HARDWARE ISSUE - NOT a Mac!), my good friend is someone who will not accept ONLY the diagnosis of a software scan, no matter how many times you run it looking for a problem. Based upon my description of ongoing problems and with a series of screen captures I emailed him illustrating some of what I was experiencing, without even having the machine in front of him, based upon his years of experience working on Macs (and PC's) he advised me there were problems likely-with both the logicboard AND the video card. (BOTH major hardware failures, both EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE elements for Apple to replace on their 'professional' top-of-the-line product, the Mac 'Pro'!)

*It took me an additional 9 months of wrestling with countless Apple representatives before the company (finally!) decided to replace the machine!* I will not bore you with the details. Suffice it to say, I have been a loyal Mac computer customer *over the past 20 years* and have decided I will NEVER purchase another Mac 'Pro' workstation! (These are Apple's 'professional' level 'workstations'. They are phenomenally overpriced for the quality of computing you get in my experience! When I originally bought mine, approximately two years ago now, I paid nearly $4000! However, becauseI STILL PREFER the Mac environment over the Windows OS I will likely purchase *an iMac* one day in the future and max it out w/RAM for the photo editing work I conduct every day. But never, ever again will I squander money on their so-called 'professional' equipment. And as a finer point, I own Apple computers ONLY. I will not purchase any of their other products, hardware OR software. Adobe does a much better job of designing creative applications, in my opinion.)

So, to come full circle, my advice to you, to 'get it' (AppleCare for one of Apple's workstations or laptops), is based upon the advice my Apple tech friend gave me early on: 'Just cough it up Mike. A couple hundred extra bucks for extended hardwareprotection MAY save you LOTS MORE in the future!' I could have never imagined how right-on his advice to me was! (And BTW, I continue to experience videocard hick-ups even with my brand new replacement, the 'Nehalem' box; AND this quad core 'super computer' REALLY DOES NOT seem anywhere near as fast ['blazing fast'?!] as one is led to believe by all the Apple hoopla on their site. Think I'm nuts about the 'quality' of these Mac 'Pro' workstations? Stop by DealMac from time to time over the coming months and take note of the TONS OFrefurbished Mac 'Pro' 'workstations' the Apple Store is re-selling every now-and-then. Over the past year alone I have seen Apple dump hundreds of these 'pro level' refurb-machines that failed the first time out! Do your own research before dropping Big Bucks on one of these things! And if you have owned one of these machines for less than a year *purchase AppleCare before your initial 12 month warranty runs out*!)

I know, I know. You're upset because this "Intellipower" concept allows hard drive speeds as low as 5400 rpm, but can be as high as 7200 rpm. So which is it- high performing drive or budget friendly consumer class model? It's both. This new variable spin speed system is absolutely transparent in operation. You don'tnotice lag, you don't hear odd sounds; quite the opposite, this drive is whisper quiet. It's a fast drive, has boatloads of space, and is priced pretty reasonably to boot. If you are looking for all out insane speed, get a Raptor-X or a 15K RPM SCSI setup. If you want a drive that will boot fast, hold your whole iTunes library and maybe even help Mother Nature a little bit, here's your answer.

First, it's an LG Commercial product, so if you look on LG consumer site it doesn't exist, go look for real info here:
[...]

Note it's LightScribe capable. I had no idea when I bought it. (Pleasant Surprise).

The software is Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 (on a BlueRay disk), along with a number of other pieces of Cyberlink software (Advisor, LabelPrint, MediaShow 4, Power2Go, PowerBackup, PowerProducer and YouCam) After installation, the software does allow for playing BlueRay movies (tested with Quantum of Solace).

It also came with a SATA cable, 4 case screws and a MOLEX to SATA power converter cable, and an actual manual. For OEM it's a very complete package.

I've only had it for two days, connected to Windows 7 64 bit OS.

I purchased three of these for my Mac Pro Quad Core desk top which I purchased at Amazon. One 500Gb is set up as stand-alone/backup hard drive and Two 500Gb are set up as a RAID. They installed very quickly without any issues at all, are fast and work well with a Dual Processor Intel system, and are super quiet. I emphasize how quiet they are since I've had many Maxtor brand hard drives which while are quite reliable as well, but, seem to vibrate annoyingly at a frequency that resonates through the PC case. These WDs are in fact much quieter considering that TWO of the 500 GB SATAs plus another stand-alone 250 (comes with the Mac Pro for OS/boot drive) and a 3rd 500 Gb WD SATA drive of the same model (a total of four installed) are all installed and running so quietly. There's no noise or vibration to hint that 4 of these are inside the Mac Pro case. Read and Write performance on both the RAIDS and stand alones has been excellent. Highly recommended.

Apple Mac Pro MC560LL/A Review

I just replaced my five-year-old Dual 2.7 GHz PowerMac G5 with the Apple 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Mac Pro and what an improvement! The new Mac is at least three times faster doing processing tasks (exporting a movie from QuickTime, for example) than the old unit, and it's SILENT. Photoshop is a lot speedier and so is Quark (although the lengthy delay in startup hasn't changed--dang you Quark!). I've pushed it hard (transferring files from the old Mac while exporting a movie from QT, listening to iTunes, and working in Photoshop) without hearing the fans speed up even once! I have three 1-TB drives installed in the enclosure with one bay free, plus six 2-TB external drives hooked up via a Kensington USB Hub and file transfers happen reliably and quickly.

Tasks such as installing hard disks can be tedious on less well designed computers, but not on the Mac Pro! Fit and finish are perfect and the hardware shows the usual attention to detail for which Apple is renowned. For instance, to install a new disk drive in one of the four drive bays: simply lift the locking lever on the rear of the case and take the cover off, thereby exposing the bays. Remove one, attach it to the new drive and tighten the four captive fasteners, then slide it back into the Mac Pro enclosure--elapsed time less than a minute! Installing RAM and PCI Express cards is equally simple.

I'm not much for gaming but I do like playing Unreal Tournament 2003 online. There's not a native Intel version of UT2003, so it runs using the Rosetta translator, but the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor and Nahalem processors handle the load with barely a hiccup--there is a slight reduction in frame rates (noticeable but not annoyingly so).

In retrospect, I'd have bumped the RAM up from 3 GB, but that's the closest I can come to a regret with this computer.

There's been some little controversy over the last year as to whether the Mac Pro is worth the price premium over iMacs because they've been closing the performance gap. For me it was no contest: I needed as much internal disk storage as I could get, plus the flexibility to add RAM and monitors as needed was a crucial factor. The iMac is a great computer, but I'm happy with my Mac Pro.

I highly recommend this machine!
