moshi iLynx - USB / Firewire Hub Review

moshi iLynx - USB / Firewire Hub

I had been shopping for a reliable USB hub that wasn't badly designed or a ton of obnoxious blinky lights that looked like an arcade game.

I gave up and then stumbled across the Moshi iLynx USB/Firewire hub. It was really kind of a eureka moment, specific to a niche need.

I'm happy with the purchase. The iLynx is well made, probably as well or better than other USB hubs, but I think it important to note a "reality checks."

The hub doesn't use a external power supply, instead it draws power by connecting to a USB and Firewire port on your computer. So, your net gain is 3 USB ports and 1 Firewire port.

While it's a beautiful and elegant design, it's a bit of an ergonomic and visual challenge to access the ports. It is probably better suited for long term connections. To their credit they do include some nice short extension USB and Firewire cables to make life easier.

The hub doesn't seem to power down with the computer is shut down which can be a problem if you external hard drives are designed to shut down with the computer.

Shipping was free and fast, but did not up to Amazon's standards of packaging. It was shipped in a padded envelope. The third party include with the package an explanation that it is an effort to be green and ship with minimal packaging. I appreciate the sentiment, but considered it risky and would have preferred somethinga bit sturdier. The iLynx is tightly boxed with light boxboard which didn't survive the shipping. The iLynx itself was in good condition.

LaCie FireWire 400 to FireWire 400 Flat Cable 130853 (Orange) Review

LaCie FireWire 400 to FireWire 400 Flat Cable 130853

Having migrated to FireWire 800 a while back I suddenly needed to upgrade an older Powerbook hence the need for this cable. I was pleasantly surprised to see that FireWire 400 is still pretty fast in and of itself. The cable worked just as expected, but it is much more flexible than expected, which is very helpful if you need to get around or over other equipment and cables. Overall another great LaCie product.

FreeAgent Desk for Mac - Hard drive - 500 GB - external - 3.5" - FireWire / FireWire 800 / Hi-Speed USB - 7200 rpm - silver Review

I have the FreeAgent Desk 500GB Mac. The only software I've needed for the drive is Time Machine.

It started right up with Time Machine backups. I have it hooked directly to my iMac via Firewire 400. The drive goes to sleep when the computer sleeps and awakens when the computer does. I have it partitioned into 2 partitions - one for backups and one for video files (which I back up on DVD's). The drive is completely quiet.

As an aside, my wife has been wirelessly backing up her MacBook to a Seagate FreeAgent Go 150GB drive that we got last year -- it was PC formatted and I changed it to Mac OS Extended Journaled and it has been flawless for almost a year now -- it is USB-connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

The 5-year limited warranty offered by Seagate is also great.

Note: if the drive doesn't sleep when the computer does, you may just need to check "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" in the "Energy Saver" settings of "System Preferences" and also shorten the times for screen sleep and computer sleep if it bothers you to have the drive light on when you aren't using the computer.

Syba SD-PEX-FWB PCI Express 4-Port Firewire 1394a/b Card for Desktop PC Review

Syba SD-PEX-FWB PCI Express 4-Port Firewire 1394a/b Card for Desktop PC

This card works as described.I was able to get transfer rates up to 80 MBs through the 1394b interface.I had problems with it cutting out on long transfers though, and it turned out to be because the card was getting too hot.I put a spot fan on it, and that fixed the problem.I was able to transfer several hundred GB at one time with no degradation over time. (averaged 78 or so MBs) I probably would recommend to the manufacturer to put a heat sink or two on this card.
