moshi iLynx - USB / Firewire Hub Review

moshi iLynx - USB / Firewire Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been shopping for a reliable USB hub that wasn't badly designed or a ton of obnoxious blinky lights that looked like an arcade game.

I gave up and then stumbled across the Moshi iLynx USB/Firewire hub. It was really kind of a eureka moment, specific to a niche need.

I'm happy with the purchase. The iLynx is well made, probably as well or better than other USB hubs, but I think it important to note a "reality checks."

The hub doesn't use a external power supply, instead it draws power by connecting to a USB and Firewire port on your computer. So, your net gain is 3 USB ports and 1 Firewire port.

While it's a beautiful and elegant design, it's a bit of an ergonomic and visual challenge to access the ports. It is probably better suited for long term connections. To their credit they do include some nice short extension USB and Firewire cables to make life easier.

The hub doesn't seem to power down with the computer is shut down which can be a problem if you external hard drives are designed to shut down with the computer.

Shipping was free and fast, but did not up to Amazon's standards of packaging. It was shipped in a padded envelope. The third party include with the package an explanation that it is an effort to be green and ship with minimal packaging. I appreciate the sentiment, but considered it risky and would have preferred somethinga bit sturdier. The iLynx is tightly boxed with light boxboard which didn't survive the shipping. The iLynx itself was in good condition.

This works well. I havent had any issues. While its not a true 7 port as you can actually see only 4 USB connectors in your hardware configuration once you have this conected to your desktop/laptop. Tips over easily if the connections arent balanced front and back. Would have been good to have a LED for each port as a means to ensure the ports are working.

Belkin F5U403 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Lighted Hub Review

Belkin F5U403 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Lighted Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this hub and there are definitely some improvements that can be made. For one thing, the USB cord is much too long - I just wanted to plug it right into my computer's USB port.A couple of inches would have been enough. Also, the ports are very close together which can be a problem when plugging in a flash drive. But one of the ports is on the end of the hub, so that is useful for things like that and leaves the other three ports for USB cords that can go side by side. There's no on/off switch for the light which might be annoying if you were working on a red eye or overnight flight with lights dimmed for the sleeping passengers.

The hub comes with a power adapter without any clear explanation of its purpose. I assumed it was just for the light because the hub normally works fine without being plugged into a power source. I later found out that it is there in case you start to draw serious power from the hub. Without the adapter, the hub is only providing 500mA for all four ports. This isn't a problem if you are using low powered devices. With the power adapter, the hub provides 500mA for each port.

7 Port USB 2.0 High-speed HUB Powered + Ac Adapter NEW Review

7 Port USB 2.0 High-speed HUB Powered + Ac Adapter NEW
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The item works quite well so far, it has only been connected about 5 days. What can you say about a 7 port USB hub? With that many ports, it would have to be powered by an external AC adapter. The one provided does not seem to be of the highest quality, it is very light but has the longest cable in the kit. The cable that connects the hub to the computer is only about 18 inches long, making it hard to place the hub in a convenient accessible area. The design of the hub leaves a bit to be desired also. There are five USB ports on one side of the hub and an additional two on the rear of the hub. This makes connecting and keeping the hub in a balanced upright position in the supplied clip-on stand quite difficult. The clip-on stand is no wider than the hub itself and does not really function as a stand as well as it should. Stand could have been larger and able to be used more easily. I think maybe a Velcro mounting surface might have worked better. But for $3.99 plus $4.99 for shipping, I really do not have a lot to complain about. It works so far and was cheap to buy. I could have bought a more expensive powered hub, but I dont use it that much. It is great when I need a USB port with the right amount of power to drive my device ie: webcam, portable harddrives, and wired printers. So all on all it was a good purchase with some design flaws to cut manufacturing prices. But for the life of me I could and still cannot find a brand name.

This switch is as advertised. It works out of the box, without any problems, setups, uplink switches, or anything else.Just plug and play.
Silent, fan-less operation. However, it does get a bit warm to the touch. If fully loaded (using all ports at high volumes of traffic) and running in warmer room, overheating may become an issue.Even so, I'll take that possibility over yet another noisy fan in my office.

D-Link DUB-H4 High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub Review

D-Link DUB-H4 High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think the other reviews largely get it right. Two things I haven't seen in them, however: first, the plug on the power cord is in the shape of a wide black monolith, so, like bulky a/c adaptors... Second, the included documentation says that the hub will revert to a USB 1.1 hub FOR ALL DEVICES if you have any USB 1 device connected. It says that to get USB 2.0 throughput, you must disconnect all USB 1.0 or 1.1 devices from the hub first. That's worth knowing.

Finally, if you buy the hub, I suggest going to Windows Update and downloading the optional USB 2.0 fix for WinXP SP 1.

The D-Link DUB-H4 2.0 is a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 4-port hub with backward compatibility to USB 1.0 and 1.1. It provides an out-of-the-box industry standard that allows connection of up to four USB peripherals or devices to your USB-ready PC or Mac.
The D-Link DUB-H4 2.0 is designed to provide quick and easy access to the four type A downstream ports for connecting USB peripherals, devices, or other USB hubs. A single type B upstream port connects the DUB-H4 to the host computer, or another USB hub enabling up to 127 devices to be connected by cascading multiple hubs.
As a standard USB hub, the D-Link DUB-H4 buffers USB data from any attached peripheral in compliance with USB specifications to provide an invisible extension of the USB bus. Supporting both low-speed (1.5 Mbps and 12 Mbps) and high-speed (480 Mbps) devices, each port creates a bridge between the peripheral and host computer.
Diagnostic LEDs located on the top of the device provide power state (self-power) and port status on each port. The DUB-H4 2.0 is packaged with all necessary documentation, a six-foot Hi-Speed USB 2.0 AB cable, and an AC power supply to ensure that the user is able to easily and quickly install and use the device.

This product installed easily using Windows XP SP2 drivers. It worked well with USB devices that were previously problematic using the motherboard USB ports on an older Dell OptiPlex computer. Before installing this PCI card, a new laser printer attached to any motherboard port disabled the remaining USB ports for use with USB 2.0 devices. My only criticism of this card is the price. Many such PCI cards are available for 1/3 the price, but the Belkin card had a good record of device compatibility.

AtivaTM In-Desk 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub Review

AtivaTM In-Desk 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased one of these hubs when I purchased my new desk at Office Depot. Unfortunately I paid the full price of $39.99 as Amazon didn't have any specials at the time. (at the time of writing this it's going for $24.95) This hub has worked beautifully for the past two years. Keep in mind that one of the USB ports is on the bottom and the other three are on top. I have my camera's USB cable connected to the one on the bottom and the cable from it coming up through the holes in the hub. Then when not in use I can slide the cable back down through the hole and it's not cluttering up my desk.

The one and only negative item I can say is very situation dependent. The blue LED is BRIGHT! This seems to be a common issue with this type of hub from various manufacturers. If this is going to be in a bedroom you'll probably want to cover it up with something. Unless, of course, you would like a rather bright blue nightlight. It will actually illuminate well enough to be able to navigate a cluttered office with easy. ;)

I need a powered USB hub. I run several high power draws: a cooling plate and USB powered hard drives. This is the only one I could find that actually told me how much power it gaves each outlet, 500m amps. The 2 vertical ports are handy for quickly plugging in flash drives.

Belkin FireWire 6-Port Hub (F5U526-APL) Review

Belkin FireWire 6-Port Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I write this review only because the negative reviews almost made me not buy the Belkin FireWire Hub. Alas, the options for such a devise are few and far between and unless you want to order something (instead of picking it up at the store) you have even fewer choices.

So, reluctantly, I picked this up and LO! on my Intel MacBook it was 100% plug and play. No software, no freezing, nothing but sweet FireWire action.

At this very moment I have a LaCie DVD Firewire drive, SeaGate 300GB Firewire drive, MOTU 8Pre Firewire Interface and a Canon DV Recorder all plugged in with one more port to spare. I was having trouble daisy chaining all of them before and so far (a few hours) everything has been running great. If I have any trouble I'll update this review.

My only critique is that the hub is so small and light weight it sort of need to be pinned down, otherwise it'll go where ever the wires take it. Just FYI.

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100) Review

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down.Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.
This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*.It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.
...EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.
I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).
Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now.It functions just as a switch should:without a thought. It just works.
Mike

Cables Unlimited USB1870 USB 2.0 7-Port Desktop Hub with Power Review

Cables Unlimited USB1870 USB 2.0 7-Port Desktop Hub with Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Another reviewer here complained bitterly about this USB hub because, and I quote verbatim here, "it looks as octopus" and that it wasn't sufficiently "stackable" for him/her. If you have the same mentality as this other reviewer, someone who would doubtlessly return their Bugatti Veyron because the cigarette lighter isn't the proper shade of vermillion or something, I'd suggest you stop reading this particular review immediately; this review will center around characteristics that are meaningful, relevant, and, you know, not idiotic, and will be of no interest to you.

NOT all USB hubs are created equal. There is enough "latitude" in the USB-2 specifications for a hub manufacturer to technically meet the specifications and produce a hub that is, for all practical purposes, useless. MANY hubs on the market, especially the dirt cheap ones, fall into this category. Essentially, they aren't worth the plastic they're made of. The differences between USB hubs is not often covered; everyone mostly assumes that USB hubs are pretty much all the same, a true commodity item, and nothing could be further from the truth.

This is a genuine multi-TT hub, and it works perfectly and reliably. True, if you plug it into power and fully load it with connections, since it's about the size of a pack of cigarettes, it WILL look something like an octopus, although with nine wires sticking out of it instead of eight. How it could possibly look like anything else is beyond me.

I loaded this thing up with 7, 1 TB hard drives and started simultaneous reads and writes to all of them. While the transfers were limited to the total speed of the USB 2 specification (which is perfectly reasonable), it worked perfectly and without a hitch. I then dismounted and removed two of the hard drives and replaced them with a USB headset and USB graphics tablet, and started the test again with the remaining five hard drives while listening to music on the headset and working with the graphics tablet in Photoshop. Again, it worked flawlessly.

Trust me... working flawlessly is something you want in a USB 2 hub, ESPECIALLY if you plan to plug in lots of external hard drives, and especially if they need bus power.

The device is very small and very light. The combined weight and stiffness of the cables plugged into it WILL result in the device not staying put. As disappointing as it may be to some people, gravity and physics WILL apply, EVEN to this well-built, excellent device. I would suggest using zip ties or a paperweight if this is really a problem for you.

If you live in the real world and have concerns outside of high fashion and advanced color coordination, and you need a USB hub, buy this one. It actually, and spectacularly, works.

Have had this plastic cased hub for about two months now and it's still working as well as the ports on the computer - but more convenient. Comes with a power supply, although it appears it's only needed if you want the hub lit even when the computer is off. Mine works fine on just USB power with only one drive installed, and I don't want the dual blue LEDs on top lit all the time as they are very bright, like light up the room bright. Also the ports may be too close to install 4 drives simultaneously. My attitude is - the brighter the better - and I only have two thumb drives, so I'd definitely buy this hub again.
