It was very easy to install on my desktop Mac. It has worked flawlessly out of the box, and the price was very competitive. I have used it for about one month so far.

I read reviews which told me that it was a little noisy and I thought that this would not bother me. I agree that the noise is not loud. It is a mild continuous background hum. But I was wrong.... It does get to me. The noise never goes away, and is the only drawback to this neat, small footprint, shiny black repository of huge amounts of data.

(More customer reviews)It's no use to predict how a hard drive will perform down the road past three months of course, and by the time you read the 'down the road' reviews, it'll likely be undersized for your needs.

Regardless, this is a nice plug and play (no drivers needed, literally plug in and go on XP) drive with more than enough room to back up most peoples complete machines with 300gb+ of usable space.I reformatted it to NTFS w/o problem.It's a Hitachi drive; they've been very reliable in my experience.I'm using it to back up both my home server and laptop with room to spare.It's USB 2.0 only, so would be slow for everyday access use.It's the perfect backup drive though for now.

An update (7/7/07): This drive is still working flawlessly nine months in, and I'm still as happy with it as when I wrote the above review.

(More customer reviews)I researched and found that cartridges for this machine are a lot cheaper than those for HP's and the toner that comes with the printer has a page yield of 1500 color and 2500 b&w.The Hp'scame with toner that had only 750 page yield then you had to pay approx $140 for the toner cartridges for replacement when with this one you can purchase toner cartridges for right around $70 which is half the price with more page yield.So far I have printed 450 pages on the starter cartridges and the toner amount has not lowered and the print quality is excellent!

(More customer reviews)I've had this drive for a month, it's been perfect.It replaces a WD "My Book" drive of the same size.I'm sorry to say that I've had two of the WDs fail at 13 months (the warranty on them is 12 months).I'm hoping for many more years of good use from the G-Tech.Using the FireWire 400 interface it's slightly faster than the My Books were with the USB 2.0 interface.

The aluminum case and the overall design of the G-Tech certainly gives one confidence, mechanically the drive case is extremely well constructed.

If I have one negative on the G-Tech drive it's the white LED on the front, which is always on whether the drive's being accessed or not.When the drive is being accessed the LED flashes brighter.If it's in your line of sight it's like having a flashlight pointed your way, especially if the room is dark.I suppose this is just one of the many good uses for duck tape.

(More customer reviews)I bought this triple interface external hard drive mostly so I can have enough space for my iTunes music library in Apple Lossless format. I saw the older models at the Apple Store and I loved how they looked and the build quality was noticeably better than the external drives from other brands. The blue LED is also a very nice touch.

The triple interface makes it easy to use this drive with any Macs, if you have a Mac with FW800, transfer rate should be blazing fast. I also use it with my work laptop running XP and Gentoo GNU/Linux, no problem using it from all the different OSes.

The drive runs pretty quiet, not sure why others had complained about the noise level. The fan on my PC laptop is much noisier than the LaCie drive.

I highly recommend the LaCie d2 triple interface hard drives to anyone looking for a ton of additional storage for data. It probably wouldn't be wise to install programs on the drive as the transfer rate is still not quite as fast as native IDE, SCSI, SATA, and what not. But it's fast enough for high-quality streaming video, and definitely more than sufficient for music files like AAC, Ogg, and MP3. It is also excellent to use for backing up important data, but note that it only contains a single drive inside and it does not have any sort of redundency.

I originally purchased one of these as a companion to a Mac Mini.But it has been such a spacious and reliable drive that I have purchased more for different machines including my Windows laptop.And the built in USB hub is a nice touch.It is so convenient I don't know why it is not a standard feature of all external hard drives.I highly recommend for use with PCs or Macs.

If you do use it with a Mac Mini, I have a recommendation.Somewhere in the documentation I read where it suggested to stack the MiniMax under the Mac Mini.While it does fit and stacks nicely, it gets way to hot.I would recommend putting them side by side.

While I can't refute other reviewers' experiences, I can share my own.I now own 6 of these drives, one 500 gig and five 1 terabyte models that I have purchased gradually over the past year and a half.I'm actually here to buy two more.They all were shipped the next day and arrived from Amazon in new condition.And all 6 of them are still running flawlessly.I still highly recommend this drive.

Belkin FireWire 6-Port Hub (F5U526-APL) Review

(More customer reviews)I write this review only because the negative reviews almost made me not buy the Belkin FireWire Hub. Alas, the options for such a devise are few and far between and unless you want to order something (instead of picking it up at the store) you have even fewer choices.

So, reluctantly, I picked this up and LO! on my Intel MacBook it was 100% plug and play. No software, no freezing, nothing but sweet FireWire action.

At this very moment I have a LaCie DVD Firewire drive, SeaGate 300GB Firewire drive, MOTU 8Pre Firewire Interface and a Canon DV Recorder all plugged in with one more port to spare. I was having trouble daisy chaining all of them before and so far (a few hours) everything has been running great. If I have any trouble I'll update this review.

My only critique is that the hub is so small and light weight it sort of need to be pinned down, otherwise it'll go where ever the wires take it. Just FYI.

(More customer reviews)I received this hard drive about a week ago for Mac OS 10.5.2 Time Machine.The drive looks and works great.I own a Mac Pro so as you can see in the Amazon ad, this thing is like a "mini me" of the Mac Pro which I think is the coolest part of it.I have had no problems (yet) with this HD and I honestly do not see it happening.

Iomega has been around for so many years and I trust their products.There is indeed ONLY one drawback to this drive.When the drive is reading and writing, it could get a little loud.I don't think this would justify one less star because the hard drive itself works perfectly so far.The firewire 400 speed is just fine for Time Machine once per hour.

Apple's website has this drive for sale also and this drive has some great reviews there if you want to check out what some other people say about it.Bottom line, this drive rocks and I would recommend it to any Mac or even PC user out there.The look is just so nice.

(More customer reviews)The drive offers a lot of potability with the 3 interface options, particularly the eSATA for speed.That makes a little better use of the 7,200rpm drive.

I have owned 12 Iomega drives over the years, and 2 have failed.Both had the interface adapter fail, and not the drive itself.When I pulled the drives, they worked fine when directly connected to the PC internal connectors.Some of these devices have been running continuously for the past 5 years providing daily backups in a scripted rotation sequence.

I haven't had any trouble with this device and I was pleased that it did not have any of the fan or drive noise so many have complained about.Those that complained about the heat should put an external fan source to keep air flowing around the enclosure.

One complaint though - it came formatted for a MAC.It would have been nice to have a choice of formatting available when purchasing the device.This was a time consuming first setup because I never use the quick format option.This was what kept the device from being rated a 5.

Can't wait for USB 3.0!

(More customer reviews)I have the FreeAgent Desk 500GB Mac. The only software I've needed for the drive is Time Machine.

It started right up with Time Machine backups. I have it hooked directly to my iMac via Firewire 400. The drive goes to sleep when the computer sleeps and awakens when the computer does. I have it partitioned into 2 partitions - one for backups and one for video files (which I back up on DVD's). The drive is completely quiet.

As an aside, my wife has been wirelessly backing up her MacBook to a Seagate FreeAgent Go 150GB drive that we got last year -- it was PC formatted and I changed it to Mac OS Extended Journaled and it has been flawless for almost a year now -- it is USB-connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

The 5-year limited warranty offered by Seagate is also great.

Note: if the drive doesn't sleep when the computer does, you may just need to check "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" in the "Energy Saver" settings of "System Preferences" and also shorten the times for screen sleep and computer sleep if it bothers you to have the drive light on when you aren't using the computer.

They quickly go to sleep when not in use, and they wake up when the computer calls for them. This is an issue with many external drives. These, on the other hand, are perfectly behaved, very quiet, and fast. I am using them on Firewire 800 for time machine and SuperDuper Clone backups, and they are flawless. SuperDuper Clone can boot system and is a perfect substitute, just as advertised. I have used this method for years, but some of the external drives have let me down. Not these. I have finally finished my long and expensive search for the right external drive. Should have started here in the beginning. Almost forgot... Amazon was the vendor. Nothing needs to be added to that except... Perfect. I will add more as I can afford, to use as external SATA using the 5th and 6th SATA ports on my Mac Motherboard. Been less successful with this with other drives, but I feel good about these drives. One thing, of course... Put a piece of black tape (I used a square piece of black duct tape) on face of white light on drive. It makes the light tolerable. Otherwise it is like headlights from an oncoming car. But the black tape looks factory, and you can still see the light. You'll understand when you do this.

Moreover I have a huge library of music and video files which I have been collecting for several years. Thankfully I havenot lost any of it. I did come across a few options from Seagate and Western Digital and also used them earlier. I wanted to try out the Iomega hard drive because some of my gadget-crazy friends had this. They do not select a hometheater or a flash drive or a hard drive in a frenzy. So on their recommendation, I went in for iomega minimax hard drive. I am happy that I am enjoying the huge space of 1 TB available to store all my media files. And it looks good than it does in the images. To begin with, I dint even have an initializing trouble - it installed easy and far quieter compared to most other hard drives I have ever used. That's indeed some relief to my ears and to those in the same room! With 3 USB ports I cant ask for more. Even as I use two of them at a time, I still have one left. With Firewire 800, the speeds are just right for a 1 TB version. Because of additional space, am also using it to store some professional data which I may need for quick reference when working from my home. The icing on the cake is the price. I am extremely happy that it comes with an easy cost tag. I mean I doubt if I can get a lower price with these functionalities intact!
