This processor is a huge step up from my 7 year old computer.While I'm very happy with my purchase, the Intel Core i7's seem like a better choice once you get into the above $200 price point.

For me, the quad core did turn out to be a much better choice than the dual core processors as I concurrently run several cpu intensive tasks at any given time.With the Q9300, nothing seems to really bog it down.Both Vista 64 and Windows 7 (beta 64) work great.

I bought the Phenom II 940 black edition instead of Intel's I7 primarily because I could get much of the same performance (not all) but for much less.

The Phenom II was easy to overclock and squeeze another 15% performance out of also.

Lastly, because I already had an AM2+ socket motherboard I didn't have to go out and buy either a new motherboard OR new DDR3 memory which would have been the case in going with Intel.

My primary reasoning is that its doubtful I'll regularly utilize even 75-80% of the Quad processing power of this CPU so it is enough for me and overall a great value.

Ok, I have to say, that this processor is very cool, but the best way to enjoy it is with an 64 bit OS, which is still difficult and I don't know why... There's some problems with windows and the compatibility of the programs (I have to say Windows Xp), I haven't tested my processor on Vista or Seven, maybe I'll try to install in a near future the seven, I hope there's available a new version of msn messenger for 64 bits... The processor is cool, but if you install a 32 bit OS maybe you can't feel the difference. Cheers for AMD!

I did not purchase my G0 Q6600 from Amazon. Back in late October, 2007 the G0's were scarce, so I went with a vendor who guaranteed that I would get one (versus the distinct possibility of getting the older "B3" version of the processor with most other vendors, including Amazon).

For the uninitiated, the usefulness of a quad-core CPU versus the more ubiquitous (and less expensive) dual-core version is dubious for most desktop users. Most applications are not multi-threaded and therefore are not able to make use of the extra CPU cores packed onto the Q6600. Your operating system (Windows, Apple OSX, Linux, etc) can, to some extent, "balance" (sometimes) different tasks between cores, in which case a multi-core CPU can yield noticeable advantages.

However, many software developers are adding "multi-thread" capability to future versions of their applications to take advantage of the new processors. Therefore, at this moment, a quad-core CPU is the best bet for "future-proofing" your computer (if there is such a thing), and Intel is the leader of the pack -- by a wide margin (substantiated by every review on the planet).

Why the Q6600?

For starters, the price/performance ratio of the Q6600 is nothing short of remarkable. This processor has single-handedly given the average desktop user high-end, workstation-caliber performance for a price that is simply unimaginable. The Q6600's dual-core sibling, the E6600, is only a few dollars less expensive. The Q6600 is essentially TWO Intel E6600 processors, for only a few dollars more. It's a no-brainer, especially since the Q6600 will run on most of the same motherboards that support the E6600.

Second, the Q6600 (especially the newer G0 model) can be easily overclocked to a speed that rivals or exceeds Intel's latest flagship $1000+ quad-core "Extreme" processors (as-of this writing). With just 60 seconds in the motherboard BIOS, my Q6600 is running at 3.2GHz, air-cooled (ie: heatsink and fan), at all stock voltages and RAM FSB (800MHz). Only the CPU is actually overclocked (using a GA-P35-DSR3 motherboard) again, at stock Vcore (1.3v). It is rock-solid stable (Prime95 "Torture Test" for 24 hours) and the four cores never exceed 50C (SpeedFan, corrected) under load and run at 20-30C idle. I have run it at a fully-stable 3.6GHz, but prefer the cooler temps that 3.2GHz operates at. I am reasonably certain that I could get to 4GHz if I wanted to move to water cooling, though I haven't experienced any lust for more power with the current setup (a first in my computing life).

I run 8GB (4x2GB) of Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2-800 RAM (at stock Bus and VLU) and an EVGA 8800GTX-OC GPU and this is the fastest desktop computer I have ever used (Windows Vista Ultimate x64).

I am NOT a gamer. I've never played a game on this computer. I do use Photoshop CS3, Lightroom, InDesign CS3, Illustrator CS3, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro CS3, AfterEffects CS3, and a number of other CPU-intensive (and multi-threaded) applications. I can process PARs, rip RARs, convert x264 HD video, download NNTP, and write this review all at the same time, all without ANY noticeable slow-down or system "sluggishness." This processor has single-handedly ushered in a new era of personal computing productivity I never would have believed possible.

OMG, I'm so pleased i bought this motherboard, i was looking for something very reliable and with zero flaws, finally got it!!!. Candidates were evga, abit and asus ( they are good quality, but no as good as intel)...

So far, this mobo, is the best component on my pc, will buy it a hundred times. Good overclocker, great bios, awesome Raid sata options, and one more thing, this mobo is future proof, you can get all intels cpus from Conroes to penryns and beyond!!!, SWEET!!!

As others have noted this is a quality board.As a several time Asus user, I expect that, but this board is a step above.Chipset heat sink (with fan you can apply if you are setting it up the right way), connectors (SATA, etc) that are in the right spaces for case usage, etc.A few quibbles 1) as I note there is no floppy cable included (even though the board has a floppy connection), 2) (not sure this is Asus' fault, but...) why is there so little space between the PCI connectors for these double slot vid cards? I've got a EVGA 285 that is hogging two slots but is only connected to one.If I had it set up in SLI, I'd only have *1* PCI slot left over.I guess the price you pay for the cool heat sinks around the board.

Still very satisfied with the purchase.

Update 9/9 - wanted to add that I got everything fully functional and for once even the powering down stuff works as it should. A couple of other nits - 1)it is either RAID or straight SATA.This is noted in the forum boards and what not, but is a bit of a pain; and 2) the e-SATA isn't hot plug.

Still very satisfied with the purchase.Runs well you can tweak the heck out of it and it has all the right connections.

I tried a few other laptops under $2,000, and none can compare to the G73jh-series.
The hardware is first class. Wow, Ultra HD & blazing fast frame rates. The cooling is the best I have seen...have yet to over heat running 3D games all day. Two fans in the back, and I add a laptop pad with 2 fans underneath. Hot air shoots out the back of this F-117 stealthly laptop.
The complaints that I have seen about the mouse button & keyboard are not warranted. Asus may have been listening and made a few mods...The keyboard is solid, not spongy like the video I saw. The single mouse button bar is the size of the space bar. It is rather easy to use acually. However, when gaming I think most of us prefere the extensions anyways, and the better models come with blue-tooth. Very nice not to have dongles sticking out.
Asus even gives a few extra option others do not. Even though Windows 7 starts very fast on this machine, it has an option to do a few things under the program (without starting windows7). Well I suppose this is a good board and Amazon was very quick in replacing it, but out of the box I was unable to enter bios. I was able to update to the latest version no problem and boot into windows vista fine but when pressing F2 all I would get was a blank black screen andI would have to reset. Strange problem, I know. There is one more problem and it's that my computer restarts at random, All parts are brand new and for my sanity sake I hope that is related to the motherboard as well.
Update: Setting OCZ memory voltage to 1.9 fixed the restarting problem, Thanks. It will be a few months before I get a chance to work on the bios problem. In the mean time if anyone else has same problem and comes up with a fix please write review.

It's pretty clear by now that Intel's desktop processors are at the top of the benchmark list and, accordingly, are the most expensive. That doesn't mean, however, that the value-oriented "build-it-yourselfers" among us are without appealing processor options for our builds. AMD is providing builders with some great performance at an attractive price through its Phenom II X4 quad-core lineup, and the 945 model is no exception. Because I was on a budget when I set out to undertake my PC build, I was aiming for a sub-$1,000 machine that, while not even remotely close to being the most maxed-out system in existence, would be powerful enough to handle my gaming needs. The reason I chose the 945 was because of its excellent performance-to-cost ratio, and its 95-watt power draw. I wanted a cool-running machine that was quiet and would not cost a fortune in electric bills. Here are my components:

I think the total cost of this build was roughly a shade over $900. Pretty darn good, in my book. (If I got rid of the solid state drive, which I use to speed up booting up and to run a game on for fast loading times, the cost would be around $815). This rig handles all my tasks flawlessly, and the 945 processor just flies along, whistling while it works. I have not overclocked this thing because there simply is no need for me to do so; the power it provides is more than ample. I do recommend replacing the stock heatsink and fan with something more robust. Although the reviews of the 945 I found online indicated that it ran fine with the included heatsink/fan, I opted to replace it, just to be safe. Running Windows 7 Pro Edition, 64-bit, the 945 gets a 7.3 on the Windows Experience Index. Every builder has his/her own budget to work with and unique purpose for the build, but I feel that the 945 is the best desktop processor out there for under $140. Folks who want great performance without breaking the bank should definitely consider it.

The last point I will make is that by purchasing a quad-core chip (as opposed to a dual core), you will be "future-proofing" your build to a certain extent, as it is likely that more software in the future will be written to fully take advantage of four core processors. At the current moment, most commonly used applications and games are programmed to take advantage of two cores, at most. Some more intensive specialty applications, such as video editing or rendering software, currently utilize four cores. Future games will likely utilize all four cores, as well. Another tangible benefit of a quad-core processor, at the present time, is that the user can run a ton of different applications at once, without any system slowdown. So, you can have twenty web browser windows open, rip a CD, play a game, etc., simultaneously, without any noticeable performance degradation.

After buying pre-built systems for several years, I finally broke down and built my own this time. I think it is important to establish how I am using the processor, so here is my system.

I paired this processor with an MSI 790GX-G65 motherboard as the basis of my new system. The other portions are 1 GB Hitachi HDD, LG DVD RW, PNY GEFORCE GTS 250 video card, Windows 7 Professional, 8 Gb DDR3 memory, Antec 300 case, and Antec Truepower Trio power supply. I have five case fans, four input and one output.

Now, on to the processor itself.
- It comes with an "Approved" AMD heat sink. With aftermarket heat sinks, one has a separate tube of lubricant that goes on top of the CPU to seal the connection with the sink, but on this heat sink the sealer is applied to the base of the heat sink, which is very convenient. This sealant looks a bit like thin cardboard at the base of the heat sink; don't be fooled, it is supposed to be there and no additional paste is needed. The heat sink is large, with lots of copper.

- Installing the processor is quite simple, so long as you remember to line up the "notch" on one end of the processor with the "notch" on the CPU mount. Instructions are provided with the retail kit. Between those and the instructions that come with motherboards, you should have no problem installing the CPU.

- The CPU has a "Cool N Quiet" mode, if your motherboard supports it. Mine does, and in this mode the processors (there are four processor cores on the chip) work at varying speeds, depending upon the task loading of each core. From what I can tell the speeds are 800, 2400, and 3400 Mhz. Using this feature, my CPU temperature is generally around 30 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature I have seen the chip at is 51 C. Note that the "cool N quiet mode is NOT used when overclocking. The maximum operating temperature is 62 degrees C.

- Most motherboards have two memory modes: "Ganged" and "Unganged". The default seems to be unganged. The difference is that in "unganged" mode the memory is split up such that each CPU core gets a certain amount of memory, in my case, 2Gb per core. This mode is optimized for multiprocessing, whereas "Ganged" mode optimizes for one application. I mention this here because this CPU excels at multiple tasks, by which I mean that I have noticed a vast difference in performance from my last (single core) CPU, also a 3.4 Mhz. Running multiple applications is very smooth. This makes it great for business applications where one is multi-tasking constantly.

- The CPU pulls 140 watts at maximum speed, considerably less at the slower speeds. The point is that you need a good power supply; mine is a 550w version.

- This model is a "black" version, which means that the cores are unlocked and can be easily overclocked. I ran mine up to 3.8 without problems, but the temperature went to 40 degrees C at idle. Since I didn't really see any overall improvement, I went back to stock speeds and "cool n quiet". But if you are into speed, this model can go to 3.9 or so stock - after that I would recommend more aggressive cooling.

- The processor clocks at 7.4 on the Windows 7 "Calculations Per Second" ratings. This rating didn't change regardless of the over clocking, one of the reasons I went back to stock settings.

I actually looked for this unit when buying, although the lower models of the Phenom II X4 run at only slightly lower speeds, and would make a good buy. But for the price, the performance is great.

I highly recommend this product for anyone who needs a solid, dependable business processor. Pair it up with a good supporting system and it will do very well.

I upgraded to this processor from a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz 6M L2 Cache 1333MHz FSB LGA775 Dual-Core Processor. This processor is an amazing upgrade. I recommend the RAM for this processor Corsair TR3X6G1333C9 XMS3 6 GB 3 x 2 GB PC3-10666 1333MHz 240-Pin DDR3 Core i7 Memory Kit. This is one serious processor, the cost in my opinion is totally worth it. Just like all black box Intel processors this one is for serious gaming/ video editing. There are several Intel Core i7 processors out there that are more moderate and significantly less costly. You will see amazing boot times and access times that are really short. Games have no stutters or any significant lag.

I got a 3D Mark Vantage score of around 19,000 amazing!

After using AMD64 for a couple of years, I am back to Intel.
Core2duo is really amazing. This processor is fast, about 3.75 Ghz AMD X2
equivalent, and overclocks well with good mobo. I have P5K-V and running
at 3.6Ghz with a Cooler master Aquagate S1, high 20Cs low load, low 50Cs
full load. Very few apps can use 100% of this CPU.
Only downside is 45nm C2Ds coming real soon.
