Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch Review

Cisco SD205 5-port 10/100 Switch
Average Reviews:

This Linksys SD205 switch rules. First, its mesmerizing because its the same size as the Ipod. Second, it does what its advertised such as connecting other computers together and most importantly, it regenerates signal. I was seriously considering buying a repeater, but they cost a couple hundred dollars. Technically, a hub is supposed to do the same thing but who wants that passive crap. The signal in my network started to attenuate and needed regeneration. This badboy fixed it and its back to full strength. I highly recommend this product if you are needing a component to branch out your network.

Product Description:
This newly-redesigned Linksys 5-Port 10/100 Switch can significantly increase your network traffics speed. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design -- tying your network equipment together. But unlike a simple-minded hub which divides the networks bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 5-Port 10/100 Switch can potentially increase your network speed by five times. It is the perfect way of integrating 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet devices, too. All five ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you dont have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently negotiates for best speed and half- or full-duplex mode, for up to 200Mbps of bandwidth per port.

NETGEAR FS608 8-Port Fast Ethernet Switch Review

NETGEAR FS608 8-Port Fast Ethernet Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others say, the device is small and easy on the eyes.I express caution with regard to critical purposes such as servers and IP telephony; we have experienced some weird problems with this.We have three (Netgear FS608 v2) in two locations; two connected to a 24 port Dell switch and the third I think connects to a Cisco 3524.They may intermittently refuse to forward frames from just one source to just one destination while allowing frames from that same source to other destination, weird stuff like that.Reset takes a power cycle OR just unplug the uplink cable and reconnect. It's a real nuisance if it means you have to drive to work on a weekend or an IP telephone call goes "blip" into la-la land.I'm sure they have a limitation on the size of the MAC address cache but I have not so far researched it.Beware using little switches on big networks! (That sounds like a grade b movie title!)

Average Reviews:

This is one of the newest switches on the market, designed in 2009. It works reliably and does not hang like cheaper switches. I was looking for a switch with minimal latency and this one was the fastest (as of August 2010) from all 8-port gigabit switches available on the market, with 1000 Mb Latency of less than 1.2 micro-seconds. It supports for up to 9216-byte Jumbo frames and IEEE 802.1p prioritization QoS. It is silent and the metallic casing is only slightly warm, this is what I liked most. The only drawback is that it came with very bulky power supply which is not embedded into a plug but is a separate unit which connects to the plug by a wire.

This switch is as advertised. It works out of the box, without any problems, setups, uplink switches, or anything else.Just plug and play.
Silent, fan-less operation. However, it does get a bit warm to the touch. If fully loaded (using all ports at high volumes of traffic) and running in warmer room, overheating may become an issue.Even so, I'll take that possibility over yet another noisy fan in my office.

TP-Link TL-SF1008P 8-Port 10/100M Desktop PoE Switch
Average Reviews:

- Use it with 3 Cisco 79x1G VOIP phones. Works as intended. The switch indicates that I consume more than 43W - less than 10W left for a potential 4th phone. It is a little higher than expected. Either the phones - 802.3af class 3 devices -consume more than advertised, or I should have taken into account cables dissipation.
- Very solid 100M switch. Replacing a sub-$20 switch, the latency observed between UPnP clients and servers are reduced.

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100) Review

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down.Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.
This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*.It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.
...EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.
I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).
Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now.It functions just as a switch should:without a thought. It just works.
Mike

I have been using this switch for over a year now and it has worked flawlessly without requiring any reboot (I attached it to a 500VA Tripp Lite UPS). I used it to power 4 Panasonic Poe IP cameras over CAT-6 Ethernet cables (2 of which are over 100-feet away) with zero drop outs. All four of these cameras are also outputting 640x480 30fps video simultaneously with no drop-out.Just plug in and go, setup can't be easier.

As an added bonus, it has vents on the left, right and back for ventilation to keep it cool without any fan noise.

IOGear 2-Port USB KVM Switch with Cables and Remote GCS22U (Black) Review

IOGear 2-Port USB KVM Switch with Cables and Remote GCS22U
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This KVM is fine, IOGear makes pretty good products. I am writing this just to provide a few comparison notes on the few but important differences between this and it's slightly more mature sibling the GCS632U.

1) This KVM does not offer any keyboard shortcut. There is a little wired "remote" connected to the KVM, and you must click the button when you want to change from one machine to the next. This does not seem ideal to me, because your hands must leave the keyboard and I would worry about the clicky switch failing over time. The GCS632U offers a typical "double scroll-lock tap" to change over, and this can be changed to another keypress as desired. I find this works much better than this unit's remote button setup.

2)This KVM has cables that connect to the monitor port and TWO USB ports on each target computer. The GCS632U one-ups this in a neat trick; it combines the keyboard and mouse inputs into ONE USB cable, so it only takes up ONE USB port on each target computer. Very nice, and fewer cables to plug in. This feature alone is actually enough for me to return the GCS22U for the upgraded GCS632U.

3) Last, but not least, the GCS632U adds 1/8" plugs for audio. I personally don't use this, but for those who want to connect a single pc speaker system (or other audio output) to the two target computers, this is a nice feature.

Hope that's helpful. To me, an extra $10 is worth having an extra USB port free on my laptop and other computer! And I much prefer the keyboard shortcut vs the remote button!

Netgear GS608NA Giga Switch 8Port Review

Netgear GS608NA Giga Switch 8Port
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NETGEAR's GS608 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch is a good product with nice clean lines. The one I have actually works flawlessly for my needs. The problem I have is that I have noticed that there is a wide variation in performance depending on the version of the switch that you get.If you have a v1, you will not get full jumbo packet support, thereby limiting you to 20 MBps.If you have v2, you will get full jumbo packet support, but non-windows computers seem to have hardware issues interfacing with the ports. And now that I have gotten to use the version 3 rendition in a Windows only situation, I can say that the performance was good. But I can't help but wonder, what happens when I have to hook up one of my Unix or linux workstations in that room? What if I have to connect a Mac?Will version 3 have the same compatibility problems as version 2?So my main gripe is, why didn't Netgear just scrap this product line and create a new product with a new model number if they new they had hardware problems with different revisions? Those buying from Amazon will probably get version 3, but if you try to buy this at a brick and mortar store all bets are off.Depending on how long they have had inventory, you can get any of the three. So the moral of the story is, definitely try to avoid versions 1 and 2 if possible.

How do you know which version you have?On the bottom of my switch, there was a white sticker with the standard power rating info and random information.Towards the bottom of the text it had the model number with *v3* appended to it, with no spaces. So if you have v3, the actual model number will look like "Netgear GS608v3*.The same goes for v2.I believe that v1 doesn't have any special markings on it, though I don't have one of those handy to verify that.

As to speed and performance, the v3 definitely works great. Each port is represnted by a number on the front of the switch. You will know that it is running in gigabit ethernet mode and connected to a cable if the port is lit up green. So if you see a green 1, 3 and 4, that means each of those ports are in use by network cards that are GigE capable.

Since all three of these are still sold under the same model number, I have to average out the performance of the others with the latest revision. As long as you get the latest revision, you should be OK in terms of features and performance at the higher end of the speed limits of gigabit ethernet. But as for whether or not all the problems with alternative TCP/IP compatibility, I have to test that a little further before I will feel comfortable that they have solved the problems of v2.If that happens, I may revisit changing this rating but until then I think this is a good device that still has some risks associated with it.

Enjoy.

Netgear GS105NA Giga Switch 5Pt Metal Review

Netgear GS105NA Giga Switch 5Pt Metal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for an affordable gigabit switch that doesn't suffer from strange auto-negotiation (speed/duplex) problems, this switch is for you.

This product is easily superior to the Netgear GS605, which may appearidentical in functionality, but in actuality is not.The GS605 behaves very badly when it comes to speed and duplex auto-negotiation, resulting in incorrect speed being negotiated with Marvell, some nVidia, and some Broadcom PHYs.The GS105 does not suffer from these problems, proving the hardware in the GS105 differs from that of the GS605.

The GS105 also has an incredibly small AC adapter; it's no where near "brick" size. However, on a power strip that has AC outlets next to one another (horizontal, not vertical), this product will probably block the AC outlet next to the one you install it in.This won't happen with vertically-oriented power strips.Just a FYI...

The reason I ranked this product 4/5 stars is because of temperature -- the GS105 runs incredibly warm (borderline hot) for such a small device.Other users have reported the same issue. It's a minor drawback, but is worth noting for others who may wonder the same question.

If the temperature is a big concern, consider purchasing a Hawking Technologies HGS5T, which is identical in functionality to this product, runs much cooler, but has a larger footprint, and a "brick" AC adapter.

This switch does exactly what it's designed for, sharing an Ethernet connnection. Don't expect to be able to configure VLANs, multilayer switching, VLAN trunks, load balancing, etc. This does not have any routing, NAT, or firewall capabilities. The EZXS88W has a great work/size ratio. It's small enough to set on top of a computer case and provides eight ports of full duplex, 10/100 networking.
It has a very informative display to give out info for connection speed, duplex connection and collision. The setup is as simple as plugging in the power and network cables. I have yet to run into any problems with this unit and would recommend it without a second thought.

This switch simply works. No complicated setup, no software to install.Just turn off both computers.Plug the shared keyboard, monitor, mouse, speakers and microphone into the switch, connect the included cables into the switch and the two computers. Then turn on the first computer, the one you want to designate as #1.After the first computer boots up and everything is okay, then push the #2 button and boot the second computer. That's it.From then on, you just push the button #1 or #2 to make the switch. It switches instantly, if both computers are not asleep. If one is asleep, it gives the signal, and then the PC takes only a few seconds to wake up.

I read a lot of reviews and I'm glad I did.Other switches seem to need software to work well, and rely on keystrokes to change.Because this switch has a button, it just truly switches over without any need to install software, making it the most generic. For PCs, you can use the scroll-lock+scroll-lock key combination to elicit the switchover. But it's simpler just to teach my kids to select button 1 or button 2.

I bought one of these units several months ago because I was constantly moving 500MB to 6GB MPG files between several of my regular computers and my DVRs and moving files this large takes quite a while at 100Mb. I hoped Gb speeds would help a lot. I did some timing and I was able to obtain about 3x shorter transfer times on my local LAN with everything connected to the Gb switch. My problem was that my house was already wired with CAT 5 cable and Gb ethernet really requires CAT 5e cable to get consistent speed. With my CAT 5 cabling, the speed was very intermittent--one time much faster and not the next.

I know this review should be about this product itself and so I'll say it's a fine product and I'll probably buy another one when I finally decide to re-wire my house. But inexpensive unmanaged switches like this are commodity products and this one is not a whole lot different than any other so I just buy whatever is cheapest.

Just make sure you have CAT 5e or CAT 6 cabling before going to Gigabit and expecting Gigabit speed.

After trying a generic switch from Best Buy that refused to work properly I ordered this item from Amazon.Simply took it out of the box and plugged it in and it worked flawlessly.I had previously installed the Network Magic software that is included. My system recognized the switch and there has been no problems since.

This is how a Plug-n-Play component is puposed to work.

NETGEAR FS108 ProSafe 8-Port 10/100 Desktop Switch Review

This 10/100 megabit switch is great if you are starting to feel the squeeze of a 10 megabit network. If you're like me, it getting pretty old moving huge scanned pictures and other large files around the home LAN. At 10 megabits, it typically took me 20-30 minutes to get a CDR worth of scanned images over to my CDR writing machine for backup. Well, not any more!
Since I hooked up my FS-108, I can move a CDR worth of images or MP3 files (650 megs worth) in about 3-4 minutes instead of that 20-30.
This switch is a piece of art. Built like a tank, incredibly solid and small for what it does. No fan, so it makes no noise whatsoever. The switch hooked up painlessly and worked flawlessly from the get-go.

Bought one of these for under $15. I have a powerline Ethernet adapter connected to my router. On the other end of the second powerline adapter (which uses your house electrical wiring), I connected this switch. To the switch, I connected my DirecTV DVR and also an Ethernet to USB adapter to connect to my series 2 TiVo (which only has a USB connection).Everything works perfectly. No configuration needed (obviously, couldn't do it when connecting to non-computer devices). It just works. Both the DirectTV DVR and TiVo DVR work fine, simultaneously!
