(More customer reviews)Docking stations are sweet!With this and my Sony VAIO VGN-N220E/B 15.4" Notebook PC (Intel Pentium D T2060 1.6 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD RW Drive, Vista Premium) Black I can have a fair compromise of performance, mobility and convenience.

When I say "worth every penny", I mean that literally.You get what you pay for.You may notice that the price of this unit falls between that of a USB hub and other docking stations that are twice the price.You get what you pay for, and I don't say that to be snide or sarcastic.

So what do you get with the Kensington 33244?You get reliability (always a plus!) and ease of installation (it would be difficult to mess this up).A USB hub won't give you the Ethernet port (to connect to your DSL or cable modem), nor will it give you a parallel port to allow you still use that beloved older printer that's given you consistent service for years.

What doesn't it give?Basically, what separates this from pricier docking stations is the absence of video and sound support.If you want to use an external monitor and speakers, you still have to plug them directly into the notebook ports.That detracts a little from the mobility of things, but then again you're only giving up a little convenience (experienced only when you want to snatch the notebook off your desk and run down to Starbucks where you can appear to be writing the Great American Novel while really chatting with friends via IM).But I CAN still keep my ergonomic Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite keyboard, and I CAN enjoy the VAIO's superior screen resolution in tandem with an external monitor (which extends the desktop!).

Worth every penny?Absolutely!Disappointed?Not in the least!

NETGEAR FS608 8-Port Fast Ethernet Switch Review

(More customer reviews)As others say, the device is small and easy on the eyes.I express caution with regard to critical purposes such as servers and IP telephony; we have experienced some weird problems with this.We have three (Netgear FS608 v2) in two locations; two connected to a 24 port Dell switch and the third I think connects to a Cisco 3524.They may intermittently refuse to forward frames from just one source to just one destination while allowing frames from that same source to other destination, weird stuff like that.Reset takes a power cycle OR just unplug the uplink cable and reconnect.It's a real nuisance if it means you have to drive to work on a weekend or an IP telephone call goes "blip" into la-la land.I'm sure they have a limitation on the size of the MAC address cache but I have not so far researched it.Beware using little switches on big networks! (That sounds like a grade b movie title!)

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100) Review

(More customer reviews)I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down.Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.
This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*.It is VERY solidly built and quite small - not much taller than the network jacks themselves.It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch.
...EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port "with a button" as the heading indicates.For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.
I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front.The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear.This does not work for me as I have my "network center" in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).
Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now.It functions just as a switch should:without a thought.It just works.

Netgear GS608NA Giga Switch 8Port Review

(More customer reviews)NETGEAR's GS608 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch is a good product with nice clean lines.The one I have actually works flawlessly for my needs.The problem I have is that I have noticed that there is a wide variation in performance depending on the version of the switch that you get.If you have a v1, you will not get full jumbo packet support, thereby limiting you to 20 MBps.If you have v2, you will get full jumbo packet support, but non-windows computers seem to have hardware issues interfacing with the ports.And now that I have gotten to use the version 3 rendition in a Windows only situation, I can say that the performance was good.But I can't help but wonder, what happens when I have to hook up one of my Unix or linux workstations in that room?What if I have to connect a Mac?Will version 3 have the same compatibility problems as version 2?So my main gripe is, why didn't Netgear just scrap this product line and create a new product with a new model number if they new they had hardware problems with different revisions?Those buying from Amazon will probably get version 3, but if you try to buy this at a brick and mortar store all bets are off.Depending on how long they have had inventory, you can get any of the three.So the moral of the story is, definitely try to avoid versions 1 and 2 if possible.

How do you know which version you have?On the bottom of my switch, there was a white sticker with the standard power rating info and random information.Towards the bottom of the text it had the model number with *v3* appended to it, with no spaces.So if you have v3, the actual model number will look like "Netgear GS608v3*.The same goes for v2.I believe that v1 doesn't have any special markings on it, though I don't have one of those handy to verify that.

As to speed and performance, the v3 definitely works great. Each port is represnted by a number on the front of the switch.You will know that it is running in gigabit ethernet mode and connected to a cable if the port is lit up green.So if you see a green 1, 3 and 4, that means each of those ports are in use by network cards that are GigE capable.

Since all three of these are still sold under the same model number, I have to average out the performance of the others with the latest revision.As long as you get the latest revision, you should be OK in terms of features and performance at the higher end of the speed limits of gigabit ethernet.But as for whether or not all the problems with alternative TCP/IP compatibility, I have to test that a little further before I will feel comfortable that they have solved the problems of v2.If that happens, I may revisit changing this rating but until then I think this is a good device that still has some risks associated with it.

This product is easily superior to the Netgear GS605, which may appearidentical in functionality, but in actuality is not.The GS605 behaves very badly when it comes to speed and duplex auto-negotiation, resulting in incorrect speed being negotiated with Marvell, some nVidia, and some Broadcom PHYs.The GS105 does not suffer from these problems, proving the hardware in the GS105 differs from that of the GS605.

The GS105 also has an incredibly small AC adapter; it's no where near "brick" size.However, on a power strip that has AC outlets next to one another (horizontal, not vertical), this product will probably block the AC outlet next to the one you install it in.This won't happen with vertically-oriented power strips.Just a FYI...

The reason I ranked this product 4/5 stars is because of temperature -- the GS105 runs incredibly warm (borderline hot) for such a small device.Other users have reported the same issue.It's a minor drawback, but is worth noting for others who may wonder the same question.

If the temperature is a big concern, consider purchasing a Hawking Technologies HGS5T, which is identical in functionality to this product, runs much cooler, but has a larger footprint, and a "brick" AC adapter.

Netgear GS605NA Giga Switch 5Port Review

(More customer reviews)I bought one of these units several months ago because I was constantly moving 500MB to 6GB MPG files between several of my regular computers and my DVRs and moving files this large takes quite a while at 100Mb. I hoped Gb speeds would help a lot. I did some timing and I was able to obtain about 3x shorter transfer times on my local LAN with everything connected to the Gb switch. My problem was that my house was already wired with CAT 5 cable and Gb ethernet really requires CAT 5e cable to get consistent speed. With my CAT 5 cabling, the speed was very intermittent--one time much faster and not the next.

I know this review should be about this product itself and so I'll say it's a fine product and I'll probably buy another one when I finally decide to re-wire my house. But inexpensive unmanaged switches like this are commodity products and this one is not a whole lot different than any other so I just buy whatever is cheapest.

Just make sure you have CAT 5e or CAT 6 cabling before going to Gigabit and expecting Gigabit speed.

(More customer reviews)This switch is exactly what I expected it to be:solid.Just like the other Netgear equipment I've used, the GS108 is completely hassle-free.My whole house was literally wired for gigabit Ethernet in no more time than it took to plug in the cables.I took it out of the box, plugged in the power cord, and plugged in connections (including a router and the patch cables to the rooms in my home), and went about my networking.It's completely idiot-proof, since all 8 ports automatically detect connection speed and uplink/downlink (meaning that no special cables are needed to hook up additional switches or routers).Plus, the indicator lights show which ports are in use, and at what speeds (10Mb, 100Mb, or 1Gb).
The form factor is great, too:At about 9 inches wide by 4 inches deep by 1 inch thick, it's small enough that I was easily able to place it inside the structured wiring panel, and so light that a little heavy velcro holds it fast.Plus, it doesn't put out a lot of heat; even with the door to the panel closed, it feels warm but never hot to the touch.

(More customer reviews)My model is the DGS-2205 with the 5V power adapter. Like a previous reviewer, I noticed that I wasn't getting anywhere near gigabit speeds to my LaCie Ethernet Raid device. Well, that's because the LaCie Ethernet Raid Device is a slow pig.

After connecting my Mac Book Pro and my Mac Pro to the switch, I started offloading data to the Mac Pro.

Sustained throughput was 320 megabits per second with long bursts up to 720 megabits per second.At this point, the hard drive on the Macbook Pro was the bottleneck.Normally, I don't care for D-link products, but this little switch is quite the gem.

I've also noticed no noise from the unit, even when transferring large amounts of data at near wire speed.

(More customer reviews)This is an unmanaged switch, which means that you can not configure Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANS) or Quality of Service (QoS) - though QoS is supported through the implementation of 802.1p, but all the attached devices must support 802.1p in order to use it. Since there is no configuration, all you have to do is plug it into power and plug your devices into it. It really is that simple for any unmanaged switch. It will automatically allow all your devices to talk to each other at the physical layer. Of course, your applications must be configured right to talk to each other, but these unmanaged devices make building the infrastructure a snap.

In answer to a previously posted review, I tested this device in the following way:

-Port 1 connected to my desktop computer with a Gigabit network interface card (NIC)
-Port 2 connected to a 10/100 switch which was connected to a gigabit ethernet storage device
-Port 3 connected to a second DGS-2208 switch which was connectedto the exact same model gigabit ethernet storage device
-Port 4 connected to a laptop with a 10/100 NIC

The point of this setup was to use the identical computer communicating with identical devices through a 10/100 connection and through a gigabit (1000) connection. I transferred a 10 GB file to the ethernet storage device through the gigabit connection first and then I transferred the exact same file through the 10/100 connection. The GB connection was about five times faster.

Now, this proves that the switch does not automatically throttle back to the slowest "connected" device. However, it does not indicate whether the gigabit connections will slow to the speed of 10/100 connections if those slower connections are actually active.

To test this, I transferred the same file from the laptop to the slower connected ethernet storage device while also transferring the file from the desktop to the faster connected ethernet stoarage device. The results? The gigabit connected devices still transferred the data at rates faster than possible on a 10/100 connection. This proves that the gigabit speeds are still achieved even when a 10/100 connection is active.

In the end, due to memory and processor limitations, this device cannot even compare to enterprise-class gigabit switches from Cisco and other providers; however, it is the best performing gigabit switch I've ever seen for under $75.
