P-Touch PT-9500PC Industrial Labeling System for PC or Mac Review

P-Touch PT-9500PC Industrial Labeling System for PC or Mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my Brother PT-9500PC Label Printer about 9 months ago and I've used it regularly. Setup was very easy on my Macintosh. Rather than using the software on the provided disk, I downloaded the latest software and drivers from the Brother website and was up and running in minutes. I did have problems getting it to work when attached to a USB hub, but that could have been a problem with the hub rather than the printer. Once I plugged it directly into the computer, all was well. [edit: That hub has since been found to be defective]

Full version info, for those interested:
* Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Build 10C540)
* P-touch Editor 5.0 (Version 5.0.031)
* PT-9500PC Driver (Version 3.0.1)

The print quality of the labels is excellent. This is a 360 DPI printer, so it has a resolution similar to the early laser printers. Curves and edges appear rounded and smooth. You can see the pixels if you look really close, but print quality looks fine for most purposes. This means that you can use interesting fonts, including fonts with fairly thin lines if you want. Print speed is very good, and the printer can cut the tape completely between each label, or just score the label and leave the backing paper connected - this makes it easy to peel off the next sticker when printing a string of labels.

The software is much better than I was expecting - labeling software is often fairly lame. P-touch Editor 5.0 is a well put-together and professional looking software package. I haven't yet used all the features, such as auto-increment and bar-codes, but just from experimentation, those features appear to be easy to get to and use.

A few software deficiencies: I haven't found a way to rotate text to arbitrary angles (I was trying to place text diagonally). Also, exact positioning of items on the label can be tedious, which is an issue if you are trying to make labels for connectors on electronic devices as I am.Lastly, the font size controls are a bit weird, in that if you enlarge a font beyond what the bounding box can contain, the text stops getting bigger but the numerical font size keeps going up.This is an issue because I often want to use the largest text I can on small labels, but making all the text sizes match exactly can be difficult. One thing I just noticed recently is that it does not have a way to create cable labels (flags) like the hand-held P-Touch labelers do.

The only reason I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5: The maximum print width is 27.1mm (just over 1"). This means that on the 1.5" labels, you get about 0.2" margins at the edges of the tape whether you want them or not. With smaller tape sizes, you can print to within 0.04" of the edge. This may or may not be an issue for you, but it is a fact that is buried in the tech specs. While it is true that it can print on all the listed tape sizes up to 1.5", it can't print near the edges of the 1.5" tape like it can on the narrower tapes.

All in all, I'm very happy with this product and I expect it to provide a long useful life just like my hand-held Brother P-touch labeler.

Dymo LabelWriter Twin Turbo (69115) Review

Dymo LabelWriter Twin Turbo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this labeler for use in a small office, primarily for file folder and address labels. Text quality - at a mere 300 dpi - is hardly gorgeous, but adequate for labeling needs. Labels are smear-proof, and I have never had a problem with printed labels darkening from exposure to hot mailing equipment, copy machines, or the like.

The Twin Turbo is essentially two 400 Turbo units in one chassis. By including two printers in one unit, DYMO has more than doubled the utility of the printer for me. This unit replaces an older LabelWriter which saw little use due to the hassle of changing out (and thereby wasting) label rolls. The TT allows you to pick from the left or right printer roll from either the application or the print dialogue box, and it remembers which side you specified for a particular label size.

Although a true full-speed USB 2.0 device, the TT is plenty fast connected to a USB 1.1 interface. The cable is included. (Why can't all printers do that?!)

The Macintosh OS X (only - sorry, no Classic!) software is ported directly from the Windows version. Not surprisingly, it is therefore a little bit kludgy and inelegant, but usable with only a very modest learning curve. Users of prior versions of the Dymo software may, like me, miss some options like full justification, and find other commands, options, and preferences have gotten buried in obscure corners of the application. The included clip art library is lame, and setting up a good looking label takes some trial and error. Nevertheless, once you have configured your standard labels you'll never again have to hassle with sheet labels, and shooting out a single label or 100 at a time is almost one-click easy.

The drivers work flawlessly, and the installer automatically launches the Add a Printer utility. The Mac software appears to be PPC only right now; I advise checking the Dymo website if you want or need a Universal Binary version for an Intel-based Mac. By default, the application installs at root level and requires an administrator password to install.

The majority of the support documentation is included as a PDF launchable from within the DYMO Label application. Again, the manual is Windows-centric, but usable for the Mac version.

The biggest drawback is the unit lacks an On/Off switch, and does not automatically go into a sleep state like most modern printers. What this means for the user is the unit's two rather annoyingly bright blue LED ready lights are constantly lit. I find this distracting and had to place the machine out of my line of sight. At least the unit does play nicely with Mac 'deep sleep' mode on a G4 PowerMac. The power cord comes in two sections totaling a good 10' (with a smallish adapter brick in the middle) so at least you can place the unit practically anywhere.

Finally, I advise shopping around. I was able to find this unit for under $150 shipped, and that easily beat the cost of buying two of the DYMO (non-Turbo) 400s.

Pros:
*Included USB cable and long power cord
*Macintosh Driver works well
* Decent value for money, dual printers add utility

Cons:
*Lacks on/off switch
*Somewhat marginal print quality
*Application interface lacks polish, no Universal Binary support (yet)

DYMO LabelWriter 450 Turbo High-Speed Postage and Label Printer for PC and Mac, USB, Printer and Software, Black/Silver (1752265) Review

DYMO LabelWriter 450 Turbo High-Speed Postage and Label Printer for PC and Mac, USB, Printer and Software, Black/Silver

The Dymo LabelWriter 400 Turbo works great. What doesn't work well is the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels."Everything works great until you want to purchase postage for your package you are shipping. With the free software provided you can print a wide range of pre-selected postage amounts, but you cannot print a specific dollar amount. To ship your Priority Mail package with the correct amount of postage, you will still have to go to the Post Office or purchase a $9.95 monthly service plan.Of course, this is not explained to you until after you purchase the unit and set up your account. In my opinion the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels" is clearly bait and switch. If you ship a few packages a month, the monthly service charge is not worth the cost.

I have had this printer for over a year and I am very happy with it's performance. I have had no paper jams and the labels are easy to order.
The scale sometimes does not show a reading but by clicking again, it will work

The few times I have had technical questions, the techs at Dymo are very knowledgable, courteous and patient.

I was so happy with its performance that when my business expanded, I purchased another one.

Brother PT9500PC P-touch Desktop Label Maker Review

Brother PT9500PC P-touch Desktop Label Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had numerous P-Touch models over the years, and I think the output they produce is superb. The software for the Mac, on the other hand, has lagged far behind its Windows counterpart. Older versions of the software, in particular, had problems with anything except TrueType fonts.

Now I see that Brother finally released version 5 of the software for OS X. I downloaded it and was pleasantly surprised to see that it had an entirely different, more Mac-like interface, and it handled all of my fonts just fine. I was quite pleased until I tried to use some of my OTHER programs.

It seems that if you uninstall the older version of the software before installing this one--something Brother tells you to do in the instructions--IT WILL WIPE OUT FILES USED BY OTHER PROGRAMS! So far the uninstaller has trashed Office 2008, Acrobat Pro, Adobe Reader, iWork '08, Adobe Creative Suite CS3 and OmniOutliner. It's hard to tell what others might be affected as well. I ended up having to do a clean reinstall of my system, which was NOT a small task.

So, buy the printer if you like, but BEWARE the uninstaller!

Brother PC-Connectable Label Maker with Auto Cutter (PT-2430PC) Review

Brother PC-Connectable Label Maker with Auto Cutter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this product to replace my current Brother P-Touch Labeler, because I wanted something that I could create laminated labels with, but also be able to make them a bit snazzier than my current labeler allows. This product fits the bill, and then some!

With this label maker, you can hook it up to any PC, and print laminated labels.Let me make this clear though---you have to have a computer to hook the labeler up to, or it will not work.Hooking up the label maker is very easy, you simply use the USB cord that comes in the box and hook it up to the USB port on your computer.Once hooked up, and powered on, a built in software called "P-Touch Editor Lite" automatically comes up.It is very user friendly, and allows you to create your labels from your computer, and print them without having to install any additional software. The great thing about this, is that with this label maker you have access to a wide range of fonts, clip arts, and editing that you do not have on a regular label maker. But, the best feature of using a computer to generate your labels, is that you get to see what the labels are actually going to look like BEFORE you print them! At last no more wasted TZ tape!

Now, if you want to take your label making up another level you can install the additional software from the CD-ROM that comes with the labeler.Installing this software is totally optional, and not necessary, but just provides some additional features that the built in software does not have. This is where things got a little tricky for me, and why I would give this product 4.5 stars if I could. Installing the software was not as easy as I expected it to be.But I am going to tell you what I did wrong so you won't make the same mistakes that I did!

The CD-ROM contains two applications that need to be installed--the editing software, and a driver for this editing software. After the editing software is installed, the CD-ROM will attempt to install the driver. This is where I got stuck--the driver would not install. But after browsing through the numerous pamphlets/manuals that come with this product I was able to figure out what I was doing wrong--but I wasted at least a half an hour trying to figure this out. Here is what you need to know:1. Make sure you do not have the label maker plugged in to your computer or turned on--wait until the installation software asks you to do so.2. Make sure that the "mode switch" on the bottom of the machine is turned to the "E" position.

As long as you follow those two bits of advice the driver will install properly, and you can be on your way to creating all kinds of labels. The reason I would take off half a star is because I wasted to much time trying to figure out what I was doing wrong--- there should be a label on the CD-ROM envelope that says "WHEN INSTALLING SOFTWARE SWITCH MODE TO 'E' & DO NOT PLUG IN/TURN ON MACHINE UNTIL ASKED".That would have saved me so much time!

With that being said, once I got the software installed (and as I mentioned earlier, the software is optional....it is just more advanced than the software that is already built into the labeler), I was very impressed. You can really do a lot with it--there are even two modes, "Express" and "Professional".There are just as many, and maybe even more, fonts as Microsoft Word, as well as many different symbols/clip arts/ frames that you can insert. You can also install add-ins for Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook that allow you to print your laminated labels from there. You can also insert photos that you have stored on your computer into the label!I especially love the ruler, which shows you precisely how long your label is going to be, so that you know how much tape you are using. There is also a neat feature called "Snap" which allows you to take screen clippings from your computer, and insert them into your label.

The label quality is excellent, and just what you would expect from Brother. As far as I can tell, this label maker accepts any type of labels that Brother makes (and they make A LOT of different kinds!)--even the 1" width labels.Fonts, and other symbols, etc, come out very clear.I inserted some photos and screen clippings to see how they would turn out, and they came out well---a bit grainy, but I was taking a large photo and fitting it onto a ?" label, so I did not expect that it would be the best quality. You can also have multiple lines of text, arrange the text direction, and do many other things with the installed software--you can even make barcodes! Other notable features--the product is actually more compact than I expected it to be from the picture, a clear window for viewing what type of tape that you have in the machine, accepts batteries AND has an AC adapter so you can plug it in ( a big plus!),is Energy Star rated, and seems to be made out of durable materials.

There is not much room for improvement with this labeler, but I would have a few minor suggestions for the manufacturer.First, I wish this product came with more than just one"sample" size TZ tape.It would be nice if there were more TZ tapesincluded and even possibly in various sizes or colors.Second, although this product is quite small, the portability of this product would be improved by adding a handle.Lastly---it would be nice if the labeler came with some type of pouch to store the label maker in, along with its AC adapter and USB Cord.

Otherwise though, great product for making quality, personalized, laminated labels! Definitely several steps up from what I had been using!

DYMO Desktop Mailing Solution w/LabelWriter Twin Turbo and 5 lb. USB Scale Review

DYMO Desktop Mailing Solution w/LabelWriter Twin Turbo and 5 lb. USB Scale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've only had this system two weeks, so far I'm way beyond very impressed!

The Good - Small 8"x8" footprint, fast & quiet printing, no ink replacements ever needed and you have stamps and labels ready to print. The software is easy to install & use, and there are no monthly fees (unlike Pitney Bowes). Print one stamp or run a roll 10 or 15 $.41 stamps. My computer is always on and I can print a fast $.41 stamp in less than 10 seconds.Really! With a package or envelope over one ($.41) ounce, the scale automatically calculates the correct postage and offers 1st Class or Priority Mail options in seconds! The label software is just as fast and easy to use!Type in the name & address and the software will find the complete zip code and save it for the next time. You can even import your existing address book.

The Bad - No insurance or registered mail is offered for the free 'no monthly fee plan'. However if you pay $9.99 a month through Endicia, Dymo's postal partner, a another software program and these options are available.Still less money than any competitor such as Stamps.com or Pitney Bowes.

Summary - Very Cool, affordable, time saving, the future is here now.
After your initial purchase, the cheapest way to buy stamps!
