Labtec Verse 704 USB Stand-up Microphone

This is a very good mic for general desktop use. However, the electret element is too cheap and tinny for serious recording.
I suggest performing a simple mod to replace the element with any other good pc microphone. Open the mic stem, remove the electret element, and replace it with a $.99 1/8in phono jack. Now you can plug your best pc microphone into it, and it will sound better than ever. As a matter of fact, it sounds way better than any USB pod I've used!!!
I use it with Visual Communicator pro and the microphone that comes in the box. My presentations sound like commercial quality.

Labtec VERSE 534 MIC NCAT W/ MUT ( 980183-0403 ) Review

Labtec VERSE 534 MIC NCAT W/ MUT
Average Reviews:

I sang using several mics, including CyberAcoustics, Plantronics, a Samson USB dynamic mic, and a Tascam mixer using a condensor mic. Tascam's software had major problems and I had to return this and the condensor mic.The Samson USB was superior, but it was triple the price, required a lot of voice volume, and had other difficulties.

The Labtec was the only one of the PC mics that somewhat captured my singing. The Plantronics sounded nice for voice, but not for singing.

Pluses--good price, captured my singing style well.

Weaknesses--Doesn't capture bass (but I doubt that my sound card too), doesn't capture higher treble.

MXL USB006 USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone Review

MXL USB006 USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

I got this microphone to record voiceover narration for a video. There are points where there will only be narration, and no music or background audio.

Although it sounds pretty good for a USB mic, in that it gives a rich, faithful reproduction, there is a noticeable pitch generated by the microphone itself. This self-noise is audible during quiet moments or even when speech is recorded, if you listen carefully. On the plus side, it does come with a nifty case, desktop tripod and has hardware gain control with three settings. It worked right out of the box with my Mac, so no problems in the compatibility department.

I was poking around to make myself feel better about buying this microphone over the popular Samson C01U and Snowball, and came across a review of all of these microphones, including the new Rode Podcaster, pitted against each other. The reviewer noted a distinct B-natural pitch from the MXLUSB.006, though it did have less self-noise than the Samson.Check out the review at Emusician, search google for Samson, MXL, Podcaster and you should find it.

Wish I saw that review before I bought the MXL, since I experienced the same thing.Though the MXL has a rich sound, the noise is unacceptable for my application and I'll be returning it.

Although USB mics are notorious for noticeable self-noise, I went ahead and got the Rode Podcaster, and have not noticed any significant self-noise.

If a faint high-pitched noise is not a big deal to you, this is a pretty good condenser microphone.I would be all over it if it weren't for the fact that I need a really quiet mic.

Product Description:
Designed withease-of-use in mind, the new MXL.006 features a large gold diaphragm that delivers a big, rich sound characteristic of studio and broadcast microphones. Unlike most studio condenser microphones, however, the MXL.006 is a USB (Universal Serial Bus) instrument that connects directly to a computer without the need for external mic preamps. Now, anyone requiring high quality, professional sound on their computer can record music or dialog by simply connecting to a standard USB port. Featuring support for USB 1.1 and 2.0, this exceptionally easy-to-use microphone even includes gain adjustment settings via the built-in three position attenuation switch.
Working with the new MXL.006 is a pleasure. As a plug and play device for both Windows and Macintosh, it requires no special drivers whatsoever. Simply connect the microphone's USB cable to a computer's USB port, and installation is quick and effortless. In addition to recording instruments or voice for home recording applications, the new MXL.006 is the perfect microphone for podcasting or adding dialog to presentations and other multimedia projects. It is also the perfect solution capable of opening new possibilities for radio and news broadcasters and for location recording.Unlike electrets or dynamic microphones typically used for computer work, the MXL.006 has an extremely smooth, natural sound typical of what one would hear on a professionally produced CD or radio show. The analog section of the new MXL.006 microphone features a 20 Hz-20 kHz frequency response, a large gold diaphragm, pressure-gradient condenser capsule, and a 3-position, switchable attenuation pad with settings for Hi (0 dB), Medium (-5 dB), and Lo (-10 dB), making it easy to configure the microphone to virtually any sound source. The digital section features a 16-bit Delta Sigma A/D converter with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. Protecting the instrument's capsule is a heavy-duty wire mesh grill with an integrated pop filter. To make recording a trouble-free process, the new MXL.006 features a red LED behind the protective grill. This LED informs the user that the microphone is active and correctly oriented toward the user. To complete this terrific package, the new MXL.006 ships with a travel case, a desktop microphone stand, a 10-foot USB cable, windscreen, an owner's manual, and an applications guide.

USB Microphone Review

Average Reviews:

About a month ago I acquired my Dynex microphone to replace the Rocketfish USB microphone I had loaned to a friend months before. The style and shape of the microphones appeared to be identical, complete with on/off button located on the front. I had been very happy with my Rocketfish microphone but was willing to try something different and took a chance on Dynex.

So far I have not been disappointed. I am dictating this review using my Dragon Naturally Speaking program version 10 and the microphone is working beautifully. The computer has no difficulty understanding my speech and is correctly transcribing all of the words that I'm saying. This is a factor of the software certainly, to some extent, but it is also a factor of the microphone: a crappy microphone would have meant garbled text. That is not happening.

I have also used the microphone to record brief portions of my speech, and the quality of the recordings are supremely accurate. Soon I intend to use it for Skype and I expect no surprises: I expect it to perform very well.

I like using a microphone which is not strapped across my head but which can be set on my desktop or be held in my hand while I dictate. Rocketfish was perfect for that purpose. So is this Dynex.

Summary: no complaints and only good things to say. Do not pay $50 for one, however, because they are widely available for much less. I acquired mine very gently used include shipping for less than $10.Don't waste your money. This is a fine product.

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone Review

Rode Podcaster USB Dynamic Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For recording my voice (baritone), it does a great job.For extra warmth that means close-miking, which in turn means not popping your p's, etc.If you hold it close to your mouth but don't directly face it end-on, that's easily done (or get a pop filter).[...].

The microphone electronics are extremely quiet - the audio is sampled at 18 bits.

It comes with a warranty which is easily extended to 10 years for free.

The real-time headphone monitoring is a great idea and works well.

It's a bit heavy (part of being built like a tank), and you need to think a little about how you're going to mount it, since some cheap desktop stands can barely manage it.

Some things to keep in mind are:
1) It likes close-miking (at least for male voices)
2) It is USB-only
3) It is a on the bit large and heavy side.

If those don't bother you, and the price is in your range, then you will probably like it a lot.

I needed a new mic for my video and music projects. The mic I had been using had served me well for many years, but it really wasn't suited for recording directly to the PC. This mic is, and I've been happy with it since the day I bought it. I really don't have any complaints. The clip makes it easy to hold the mic at a consistent distance. And the stand allows for hands free use as well. I'm always experimenting with electronic equipment in order to get the sounds and images that I want, and I have to say that pound for pound, this is one of the best little mics I've ever gotten for this price.

Samson CO1U USB Condenser Microphone Review

Samson CO1U USB Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The audio quality of the mic is outstanding, worthy of 4 stars on its own.I use it to do production for radio and it sounds nearly as good as the studio mics. The problem lies with the software and the drivers.Mac users aren't the only ones experiencing headaches. If you are going to use this microphone on a Windows PC, I highly recommend using the native Windows drivers instead of the Samson SoftPre drivers, as the XP drivers are much more stable. The SoftPre, for some reason, conflicts with the native XP drivers and is prone to crashing and causing erratic audio performance - such as stuttering, clipping and popping noise, none of which I get using XP's drivers. The Samson drivers also crashed my computer three times in the first couple of days I used it, so now I am using the XP drivers. The Samson drivers aren't fully compliant with Windows XP, and as such you'll get a barrage of warnings when installing them ("Drivers are NOT digitally signed...may cause system instability!").Its kind of a disappointment, because the SoftPre has some very useful basic features like Gain, LPF and such, but if you know anything about working with DAW's, any capable editing program will have these functions built in anyways. So for the price, I say go for it...just stay FAR away from Samson's software.

*update*

This mic works perfectly with the native OS X Tiger drivers. Its truly plug and play, have been using it in Garage band with no problems. Also, this mic works perfect with Vista...no software needed.

ALSO...I notice alot of people commenting on adjusting the balance when using this microphone. You dont need to do that, because you are forgetting that this is a MONO sound source. In your audio editing program, select the Samson CO1U, and then when you select input, choose "Input 1 MONO" instead of "Input 1-2 Stereo."Stereo is out of balance because again, its a single mono source.Hope this helps.

Telex M-560 Computer Headset Review

Telex M-560 Computer Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most computer microphones are plugged into your existing sound card.Though the card can certainly improve reception, it can also cause signal degradation by picking up internal and external electronic noise. As a result, voice recognition software sometimes labors to understand precisely what you mean.
With this USB device, though, there's no sound card involved. It automatically records your voice in digital sound as you speak, rather than running your voice through a board where additional noise can be picked up. In fact, so good is the Telex M-560, that it actually tanks if you try to record in anything less than CD quality.
Unsurprisingly, recordings are therefore crystal clear for multimedia work, and voice recognition software obviously responds better to it than non-USB mikes.Like a boom on a movie sound set, it can be put well out of the way and still pick up brilliant sound.Because of its unique directional technology which cancels background noise, you can use it at a distance of up to two feet and still have superb results with voice recognition software. I've got mine on top of my monitor and I never have to readjust its position. And, because it's USB, I can easily share it between Mac and Wintel machines.
The only problem I can think of with this thing is that it doesn't work under Windows 95.Telex hasn't made drivers to support that legacy platform, and they don't appear to have an interest in doing so.Their primary target audience is quite clearly people with newer machines, and Telex makes no apologies for it.After all, most voice recognition software requires faster processors to run effectively, and those machines would typically be running at least Windows 98, anyway.
That proviso aside, I love this microphone. No, it's not quite as good as the results you'll get from inside a recording studio. But for the money, it's close enough for me.

Telex is proud to announce the volume availability of the new Super-Directional USB Digital Desktop Microphone (M-560). This innovative microphone enables high-quality digital speech recognition without a sound card or headset for PCs iMacs, and iBooks.Telex is first to market with USB microphones. The company is in its fourth quarter of shipping USB devices. As computer companies continue to standardize on legacy-free systems, Telex will continue to lead the way with innovative USB audio products. USB means one product can work with multiple platforms. USB microphones are perfect for legacy-free systems like Apple's iBook or Compaq's iPac.The Telex M-560 delivers pure digital signals to voice applications, eliminating performance problems caused by sound card variations. The result is more accurate speech recognition and higher voice quality. This innovative desktop microphone works with any USB-equipped PC running Microsoft Windows 98 or Apple iBook or iMac systems running Mac OS 9.0.4. Because there is no sound card to configure, you simply plug it in. This desktop microphone provides high-quality audio input without a headset. Now you can use voice applications without being tethered to your computer by a headset.Clear, consistent audio performance is critical for accurate results with voice applications. That's why Telex has used its more than 60 years of experience in the audio industry to design a unique microphone structure that allows destructive interference to cancel background noise and focus audio reception on the user's voice. The Telex M-560 provides speech recognition up to two feet away in most office environments. Effective range is even further for other applications. MXL 24BIT/96KHZ USB Condenser Mic Review

MXL 24BIT/96KHZ USB Condenser Mic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For years I've been working with traditional XLR cardioid condenser mics (love my Neumann TLM) but I've had to travel a lot lately, and humping the XLR cables, pre-amp, and heavy mics through airports and hotels has gotten to be a real bother, so I started The Hunt for a Great USB Mic.

Now, there are good USB mics out there for under $100, and Blue's Snowball is adequate. At ~$70 you get what you pay for. It is ok for podcasting, if you aren't too picky about sound quality. I had one shipped to me, didn't like that background hum, sent it back thinking it was a problem with the mic, and got another one that sounded exactly the same. (And yes, I read all the instructions and advice and made all the adjustments. I even tried it on Mac, Laptop, and PC--so spare me the "oh did you try this, and you're an idiot because you didn't try that" Snowball fanboy snarkiness ;).

So, when I returned the Snowball, I considered getting Blue's Yeti, but it's sheer size disqualified it -- the mic is way too big and heavy to be considered remotely portable, and since I like to record standing-up instead of sitting down, I worried that it would be too heavy for my boom.

Having eliminated Blue's mics, I tried the Samson G Track at ~$120 and the AudioTechnica AT2020 at ~$110. I like that the Samson has the headphone output and the gain controls (which the AT does not) and better recording quality versus the AT2020 at 48kHz versus 44.1kHz. However, the Sampson weighs a half-pound more. For both mics the sound quality is great for podcasting, and while vastly superior to the Blue Snowball, and certainly adequate for most vocals that will be supported with background music, neither mic produces recordings clean enough and of high enough quality (limited to 16bit) for pure narration (IMHO).

So I upped my price-point again. And found THE perfect USB mic for voice-overs at ~$275. The MXL USB.009. It records at 24Bit/96kHz -- a huge improvement over the 16Bit/44.1kHz of all the other mics. It has the benefits of a mic jack and knobs for gain control like the Samson G Track, and is Plug and Play. I don't have to tweak anything on my Mac or my PC. It is lightweight, so I'm not worried about my boom tipping, and there is no background hum. I like the steel carrying case -- it weighs about 6 pounds with the mic and USB cable -- and makes it easy to carry through airport security.

Yes, the MXL USB.009 is 4x the cost of the Blue Snowball and 2.5x the cost of the Samson G Track and the AT2020, but for me, it is worth it. I not only do podcasting, but I do professional voice-over work, and I need something that will give me the convenience of direct USB recording with near-studio quality.

Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone Review

Sony ECMMS907 Digital Recording Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used the ECMMS907 to fill about 150 mini discs since I bought it three years ago. It runs lovingly on one AA battery (unlike it's watch-battery-dependent predecessor) and allows for two polor patterns 180 and 90 degrees. The casing of the unit is rugged. It includes wind screen, travel pouch, stand clip, and four foot cloth encased cable. I have been able to record everything from street musicians to Dave Bruebeck concerts.

In pro audio it isn't considerd cool to like Sony gear as it often uses digital tricks to achieve a bogus sense of higher fidelity, but Sony electronics are bulletproof and work exactly as designed until you lose them or back them over with your car. That said...

Lots of people I have spoken with purchased this microphone thinking they could jack into the 1/8" input on thier laptop computer and get desirable results. This might work if your microphone is inches away from a blaring guitar amp, but won't do well with amient recordings or speaking as the output gain is far too low. Most people are not happy in this situation.

Overall, worth every penny.Perhaps there is a modification out there to improve the output gain.

CAD U37 USB Studio Condenser Recording Microphone Review

CAD U37 USB Studio Condenser Recording Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The CAD U37 is a great mic for the money, but you have to be willing to tolerate its desire to capture ambient noise. If you're around a noisy computer, for example, it will capture that sound. If you are in an echo-prone room, it will pick up any echos. You might like this for multiple people to be gathered around a single mic and speak or play an acoustic number, but if you want something akin to an isolated sound where your voice and only your voice is registered amid a din of activity, you'll be disappointed.

I have not fiddled very much with the two settings on the microphone. I have kept the buttons facing to the left (if you are looking at the CAD logo (facing up) on the microphone).

Product Description:
Record studio-quality audio directly to your computer via USB with the CAD U37 side-address condenser microphone--a great choice for both vocal and instruments as well as for creating podcasts and voiceovers for videos. Compatible with both Windows and Mac OS operating systems, you can simply plug the U37 into your PC and start recording.
The U37 has two switches on the front. The first switch allows you to decrease the sensitivity of the microphone so the sound quality is clear for extremely loud sounds. For example, the switch should be in the "-10" position for loud voices, percussion and other high sound pressure level devices. The "0" position should be used for normal voices and string instruments.
The second switch on the U37 is designed to reduce pickup of deep-bass sounds. The switch should be in the "Normal Bass" mode in most cases. However, if you want to remove wind noise, ventilation noise, or decrease the low frequencies in a recording, the switch should be in the "Bass Reduction" position.
