I got this Corsair PSU to replace the 250-watt Bestec one that came in my Compaq Presario SR5707-C. It powers my system (including the GeForce 9600 GSO I added) beautifully, runs cool and quiet, has a power switch, and has long cables and plenty of cable ties (plus a "Powered by Corsair" sticker to put on your computer!). I've had my system running almost nonstop for 2 weeks with this new PSU and I've had no problems.

I highly recommend this PSU. Just be aware that the cables are long, so there'll be some crowding if you put it into a standard sized, pre-built computer along with a big video card.

rocketfish, like dynex, are brands owned by bestbuy, and since i havent heard of any PSU actually made by bestbuy, they are just rebrabded PSUs and so is the case with this one. it is made by Huntkey and is Huntkey's 650Watt unit. originally this sold for over $150, not a good deal, but at this currunt price of under $50 it is a steal. it only has a one year warranty but can deliver 700W. they did cut corners in a few areas like using smaller guage wiring for example. it does have active PFC, big plus there.

BENCH TOP PC COMPUTER POWER SUPPLY ADAPTER 12V 5A 5v 2A 60 WATTS MOLEX Review

BENCH TOP PC COMPUTER POWER SUPPLY ADAPTER 12V 5A 5v 2A 60 WATTS MOLEX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most 12v/5v power supplies carry a maximum of 2 amps on the 12 volt side. This is more than enough to power virtually any modern hard drive during its steady state operation, but some require more than that to spin up. If you use with any frequency the USB hard drive adapters meant to accompany this product, then you'll eventually encounter such a case, which is evidenced by a disturbing clicking noise not dissimilar from a truly finished hard drive. This 5A power supply is the only one I found that carries more than 2 amps on the 12V side, which is more than enough to handle your run-of-the-mill consumer level device. Now whether it'll power on a five platter Barracuda...you're on your own with that.

Consider the five star rating provisional. If it continues to work as-is then the rating stands. However, these things tend to start failing after a year or two, which isn't surprising due to their ordinarily cheap construction. This one seems sturdier than average, however, both in weight and quality of plastic casing. I've opened packages where the "clam shell" casing had detached during shipping or warehousing, though actually seeing what goes on electronically in modern power supplies is far more worrisome than whatever happens with the cosmetic housing. The included power cord is of the thicker variety usually seen with PCs rather than the thinner, cheaper kind usually shipped with these. Also included is a velcro strap, which is a nice touch. The informational sticker includes the distributor's website, which could come in handy if you forgot where it came from or it gets delisted from Amazon.

Note that like most (all?) of these, this power adapter lacks a 3.3V line, but I've never seen a case where it was necessary. If you somehow do need this or just don't want to be bothered purchasing something like this, a regular old PC power supply will naturally power the hard drive, but, unfortunately, this means soldering or splicing a power switch or "hotwiring" an ATX supply, but, if you can find one, AT supplies have the switch built in. What you gain in budget and/or ingenuity you'll lose in portability, aesthetics, power consumption, and noise level, however.

Given that this particular supply seems to offer a premium at virtually the same price others are sold, this purchase seems like a no-brainer. The downside, however, is that you've probably doubled your cost for the function and now have an extra brick lying around. Personally, I use the old supply to power a drive with known low power consumption. It functions as a "bare" fixed file repository accessed via ESATA -> SATA cable. Enclosures just add heat and don't do anything meaningful to absorb shock, so why not?

Unfortunately, I have not found a reliable method to anticipate which hard drives require more than 2A current. Many three platter drives power on fine within the limit, but I have a single platter drive that does not. While SATA drives supposedly consume less power than their IDE ancestors, this doesn't seem to offer any guarantees. The ratings manufacturers publish refer to steady state operation, not spin up. Off the record, in limited testing, Seagate seems to have the most difficulty spinning up, but I have a disproportionate number of Seagate drives in my sample set so that skews my observation. Western Digital Green drives seem best of breed in this regard. The intarwebs say it can accomplish spin up with a mere 1.8 amps, which is nearly an entire amp less than the average, which seems to be in the 2.4-2.8 range.

Coolmax 300W M-ATX Power Supply CM-300 Review

Coolmax 300W M-ATX Power Supply CM-300
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This power supply is slightly cheaper than other brands but I can by a 380W power supply for $35. As they say, you get what you pay for...

I had to replace the power supply on my HP PC. It was easy to install and worked... Until recently, this week, I noticed that one of the fans in my HP sounded like the bearings were going... Well I took the cover off, and put my ear up to the CPU fan, processor fan and noticed that the fan in the power supply was making the noise. I had the power supply for 3 months and the fan is going. I probably can not get my money back and it is not worth it to take the power supply apart to replace the fan (since something else may decide to break on it)... (I did replace a power supply fan on a previous NEC PC that I owned however...)I am going to be buying a better power supply...

I know that electronic parts use cheap parts and the original power supply in my HP lasted 2.75 years. In my Dell desktop, it was around 2 years (and in one of my work places, the IT was replacing a lot of power supplies) In the old days, you did not have to replace power supplies as you do today. But, a power supply should not be having problems at the 3 month time period...

Okay so for the price this power supply is great. But if you are expecting all the specs to be right then you will be disappointed. I bought this power supply because i needed a min of 36 amps on the 12+ volt rail and the specs even on the manufacturer's website claim that it has 38 amps on the +12 volt rail. Well this wasnt the case... when i received the item the box specs and the unit itself said 35amps on the 12+ volt rail... For this i had to return the product.... But if you dont need more than 35 amps on the 12+ volt rail and want a low price then this psu is for you.

Average Reviews:

Just as the other reviewer has mentioned, the first unit had high pitched noise issue.I waited about four days to make sure that it is permanent issue, and had it exchanged for the same unit.
Second unit, to my relief is quiet and without a drama to report on.It is relatively quiet, about as quiet as the OEM unit that died on me after 14 months of service.I took quick wattage reading from my APC, and it drains about as much as my OEM unit, which was rated at 350W.
Something to watch out for:Antec recently phased out EA-500 and replaced it with EA-500D, which is made by Delta, and not Seasonic as EA-500 (this unit).Delta is known for making OEM products, but their reputation is still pretty much unknown.

Intel Core i7 960 3.2GHz Clock Speed 8M L3 Cache LGA1366 Desktop Processor BX80601960 Review

Intel Core i7 960 3.2GHz Clock Speed 8M L3 Cache LGA1366 Desktop Processor BX80601960
Average Reviews:

I have had my previous P4 for quite a while. I had overclocked it and took it for all it was worth and have been waiting for the right time to buy a new PC. Well, after many years of good use, the P4 forced my hands last week when the southbridge fan gave way and the board stopped functioning. After having to work through a bunch of glitches with it for the last six months, I knew it was time for me to build a new system.

When I get ready to build a new system, I spend tons of hours researching everything. I specifically focus on quality. I know that I am more satisfied with the Intel line than the AMD line (I built both). I spent a lot of time looking at the 800 series, 900 series, and 900 extreme series i7 processors to make sure I know the value of each chip. It will always be a question of quality and speed versus dollars and everyones value point is different.

I had a choice here. I could have gotten an i7 920 (or even the i7 860 with an even cheaper motherboard), some good but cheap memory, add a nice 1.5TB hard drive and have a definite upgrade from what I have now and cost me half as much for my system. I would have been happy with it and love the increase in performance. But one thing I have learned is that if I am willing to spend a little extra, I will be satisfied a lot longer. The price I paid here on Amazon is the same as for the 950, although almost twice as much than the 920. With free shipping, and no sales tax, I really get a better value for this chip here than anywhere else. The speed tests show that the performance of the 960, especially when paired with good memory and an extremely fast hard drive, far outperforms the 920 so that the money difference can be justified. I know a lot of enthusiast are set on buying the 920 and then just overclocking it, but the 960 can be overclocked easily to 4.1 Ghz and can get to speeds the 920 only dreams of having (I am not complaining about the 920, but I just don't care for the overclocking argument). Paired with a solid state drive and PC3-1600 low latency Dominator triple-channel memory chips (and a P6X58D Premium motherboard with SATA III and USB 3.0) and I have a system that will last me quite a while before I need an upgrade. Could I have waited until the price of those components come down? Yes, but there will always be something better. I spend a lot of time on my computer (for work and play) and I want something that will satisfy me for many years before my next upgrade.

As far as performance, OH MY GAWD! I can't really compare it to the 920 since I don't have one. I can't even separate out the effect of the solid state drive, dominator memory, P6X48D motherboard, or the i7-960, but I swear the computer just reads my mind and performs the tasks. Never had I seen instant loading like this system does. I am absolutely blown away. I am sure Windows is creating a new operating system to slow things down, but until that happens, I am a happy camper.

Powerful New Microarchitecture Eliminates Slowdown
The i7 family is Intel's flagship processor, and for good reason. With the i7 family, Intel engineers invented a revolutionary new style of microarchitecture. They replaced the front side bus--a longtime staple of processor design--with a new technology called QuickPath Interconnect (QPI). Using QPI, the Intel Core i7-960 processor achieves unprecedented levels of bandwidth, and can use its four computing cores to their maximum potential.
To put it simply, users will enjoy faster and more streamlined processing than ever before. Your computer will handle multiple projects and applications without the slowdown you'd experience with a lesser processor.
Extremely intensive programs like high-definition media editors will run more smoothly and responsively. And you'll be able to experience next-generation games without frame-rate hiccups and slowdowns.
New Technologies Boost Performance
The Intel Core i7-960 processor also makes use of several other cutting-edge technologies:

Turbo Boost Technology allows the processor to run up to 133 MHz faster when it's operating below power/thermal limits.
Hyper-threading Technology enables more efficient use of processor resources, making the most of highly threaded software like media players and next-generation games.
Smart Cache Memory increases available RAM resources, leading to less lag while multi-tasking.
Media Editing and Sharing Easier than Ever
Whether editing high-definition videos, touching up family photos, or splicing up music, the Intel Core i7-960 processor provides the processing power needed. The processor's four cores are optimized to keep up with the most advanced digital editing software. It also accelerates DVD encoding and compression, allowing you to easily share your HD home videos with everyone.

Unparalleled Gaming Performance
With the advent of next-generation games, PC gaming is more immersive than ever. The latest games take advantage of multi-threaded programming, allowing for more realistic graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence (AI). But you need more than just a good graphics card with high GPU output to fully experience all these effects. Underlying the visual realism and advanced AI scripts are thousands of high-speed calculations that your CPU must process.
Fortunately, the Intel Core i7-960 processor is specifically designed to handle these calculations. Using multi-thread architecture, it has the ability to process thousands of graphical characteristics at once, resulting in a smooth and lag-free experience. Intel worked closely with CryTek -- the developers of the advanced game engine behind such games as Crysis and Far Cry -- to guarantee that gamers have an immersive and lifelike experience.

This is a great power supply and the cables are wrapped in a cool looking black mesh and each cable has multiple points of connection. They are clearly labeled and come with all screws for mounting. The screws are black and the finish on the power supply is a cool flat black look. It comes with about a dozen small black zip ties and a case badge. The cord is nice and long (5-6ft ish) It has the 8 pin ATX power in addition to the regular 24 pin power supply so you can run a big system on this. If you are unfamiliar with how to install a new power supply you might want to follow these 10 simple steps:

1 Unscrew the four screws holding the old power supply to the case.
2 Pull the old power supply out and rest it on a corner of the case.
3 Put the new power supply into the case.
4 Follow the first cord of the old power supply noting the color of the wires and where they are located. You might want to write this down if your memory isn't the greatest.
5. Find a cord on the new power suppy that matches and plug it in to the empty socket. Push down hard to make sure the cord is well seated.
6. Keep doing this untill all cords on the old power supply are unplugged and replaced with cords from the new power supply.
7. Screw in the four screws to secure the power supply to the case.
8. Plug in the power supply
9. Turn on the switch to the power supply.
10. Turn on the computer.

The whole process takes less than 10 minutes and with the low cost of the Thermaltake power supply it makes it cost-and-effort effective to upgrade your old power supply.
