Western Digital Caviar 250GB SATA Hard Drive 16 MB Cache ( WD2500KS ) Review

Western Digital Caviar 250GB SATA Hard Drive 16 MB Cache
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a decently fast drive that runs a bit warm with little spindle (motor) noise.

It is NOT "whisper quiet" as it has plenty of audible seek noise when accessing the drive. Unlike some other brands, there is no Acoustic Level Adjustment software available to reduce seek noise. This is really only a concern for Silent PC enthusiasts, as most PCs cooling fans will drown out the seek noise.

Curiously, the similar WD3200KS is much quieter. Or at least my particular one is.

Product Description:
WD Caviar SE16 SATA II hard drives combine 300 MB/s transfer rate and 16 MB cache for industry leading performance. Yes, these reliable drives are lightning fast, but they still deliver technologically advanced acoustics and cool operation. Fast - The one-two performance punch of 300 MB/s transfer rate, state-of-the-art performance for SATA drives, and 16 MB cache make the WD Caviar SE16 family the fastest desktop-class hard drives available. Cool - Cool operation means the highest reliability even in high-heat environments such as personal video recorders. That's why these drives, the coolest on the market, are the drive of choice for the world's leading consumer electronics manufacturers as well as the world's leading PC makers. Quiet - The technology that Tom's Hardware called "very fast and nearly silent" is repeated in this family of drives. Western Digital has minimized noise to levels virtually below the threshold of human hearing with WhisperDrive technology. And to cut seek noise, SoftSeek technology streamlines read/write seeking algorithms, resulting in the drive operating more efficiently when accessing and writing data.

For economical, personal mass storage, you can't beat the good old hard disk drive. There's a problem however when you run out of space in your computer case for more.Sure, you could pop open your case and disconnect the cable from your previous drive, unscrew it from the mounting brackets, and then do the same in reverse for the hard disk drive you want to put in, but that's tedious, and thankfully it's in the past now.

What this little gem does is take much of the hassle out of putting in a new drive or swapping any SATA hard drive. It will just show up as a generic mass storage device in windows, no need to install additional drivers. It's almost as simple as plug and play.*The transfer speed is quite good, reaching more or less 240 megabits a second (30 megabytes a second), which is half the advertised speed of usb 2.0, but still, a lot faster than I expected. The speed is easily fast enough to stream hd video content from the hard disk drive.

The only reasonable fault I could find with this product I could find was that inserting the drive wasn't so easy.I had to use quite a bit of force to get it to slide in properly.I would have preferred something that required less force but had a locking mechanism to hold it in place.Still, that would only make me take off half a star at most. There's also one more point which I'll mention below for people installing a new hard disk drive with this device, which is not really the fault of this device, but rather a fact of life for storage devices.

*If you are installing a brand new hard disk drive from this device, it's not quite plug and play. You're going to have to format the drive, I recommend doing a regular format and not a quick format as quick format from anecdotal evidence has been shown to produce more errors later on in the life of the drive.

Here's how I did it from Windows Vista:

1. Click The windows button to bring up the menu, right click computer and click "Manage"

2. Once the computer management window opens, on the left side you will see a vertical list of menu trees with labels. One of them will be storage, if the menu is not expanded already, double-click it, and then click on Disk Management.

3. Find your new disk drive, it should give some indication that it's not formatted, or does not have a partition.Right-click it and select format.

4. You can now enter a label for your drive if you so desire, and you could choose to quick format.I do not recommend that option for the reason stated above.Choose your preferences and then click ok.

5. If you did not choose quick format you will have to wait a while for the drive to format, on my new 640 gigabyte hard disk drive it took a few hours.Worth it in the long run.

6.Your drive should now be useable in vista! It should show up on your computer menu and work like any other hard disk drive in windows.

This is a great product.. or should I say could be a great product.Kingston is dead last in SSD support among the major manufacturers in my opinion.Go with the intel equivalent (X25-V) and never look back, the extra $10-$20 is well worth it.Kingston said trim firmware would be released for this drive and for the V+ line...ask them via email and you will find out that is probably not going to happen.I will repeat it again, BUY THE INTEL X25-V!! and you will not have to deal with Kingstons lack of support.Don't believe me?Go to their website and look at the support site for SSD's....no usable info and not even a forum to discuss issues.Absolutely horrid customer support!

This drive uses reduced power at least partly by varying its rotational speed as needed. It is part of WD's new green power line. I purchased it to replace a failing Maxtor drive that came with the PC.

The WD drive is incredibly quiet. It is also considerably faster than the original drive in the machine. A very noticeable speed boost.

Installation is conventional. Straightforward although I would only recommend doing ANY hard disk upgrade for people with some experience working inside PCs. WD's Data Lifeguard software helps with formatting, partitioning, and copying files from your old drive (assuming it still works).

Obviously, if you want to copy from your old drive you must temporarily install it in your PC after installing the new one. WD's software will copy entire partitions quickly and easily. I used this to copy the system and other partitions to the new drive. It worked reasonably well. Win XP booted correctly. Primary problem was that this got Microsoft Office 2003 a bit confused. Somehow the office update settings got out of sort. Office worked without doing this although Office Update did not. Actually had to clean those registry settings and then uninstall and reinstall Office.

WD's user guide is good although a bit poorly worded in places - the guide for using the software to help set up the drive. E.g. The user guide talks about creating a bootable floppy diskette. I did although it was never needed. It may only be needed if setting up the drive from DOS and your PC cannot boot from CD.

Overall, I strongly recommend this drive. Over the years I have found WD drives to be quiet, fast, and reliable. This continues the record. Remember to erase your old drive!

Iomega 33849 eSATA/USB 2.0 500GB Professional Hard Drive
Average Reviews:

As a technology guy, I have long advocated backing up your computer, specially for small businesses that do not have an IT staff. I was previously using a Seagate External USB drive, and although it worked fine, it was relatively slow once my data grew so large. I am not a big fan of incremental backups, so I like doing a full back every week and keeping a few weeks worth before overwriting them. When I bought a new computer that supported eSATA, I knew it was time to get a new external drive I can use for backups. The Iomega eSATA 33849 really impressed me with it's speed and reliability. I even purchased a second one so I could keep one offsite for even more protection. If your computer supports eSATA, this device should be a no brainer if you are currently using a USB drive because the speed will simply astound you. If you are considering buying a backup device and want a bit of "future proofing", then this drive makes a great addition since it supports USB for you now, and then you can use the eSATA when you eventually replace your computer. Either way, the Iomega 33849 will not disappoint.

19 inches Super Fast SATA III 6 Gbit/s Round Cable with Latch, Black Review

19 inches Super Fast SATA III 6 Gbit/s Round Cable with Latch, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rounded Sata cables are a must for a performance computer. They allow for much better air flow than the traditional 'band' style cable, not to mention they are MUCH easier to work with. These SATA III cables are perfect for maximizing air flow in your computer case, and since they support 6GB transfer speeds, they are also practically future proof. Their build quality is excellent. The latch works, but seems superfluous since it's hard to imagine how a SATA cable would get unplugged while inside your case--it's not like they're put under any stress unless you REALLY don't know what you're doing. I'd much rather see this feature on a USB cable!

These are great little cables and exceeded my expectations. I just with they offered a 30' version for running serpantine cables around the outside panel of my Antec P82 computer case to my Blue Ray drive. Ah well, maybe sometime in the future.

These are great. Pull the trigger if you need one.

2.5" To 3.5" Ssd/sata Convert Review

2.5' To 3.5' Ssd/sata Convert
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some sites' reviewers are complaining this is overpriced.True you can get 2.5" to 3.5" drive rails quite easily for only a couple bucks. The point of this product, however, is that it makes the 2.5" drive FIT into SATA backplanes and drive bays made to directly slide/hot-swap 3.5" drives. For this product's concept, I give it 5 stars.

Unfortunately, its construction is rather cheap. It consistently got jammed in one of my drive bays.In general, I am comparing to VelociRaptor HLFS "backplane" ice packs which don't have any issues and are almost too high of quality.Because of the construction and occasional fit issues, I knock it down to 4 stars.

Finally, the ventilation is very poor. When used with SSDs, it is fine, but with a normal laptop hard drive (I used a single platter 7200 RPM), and the drive got extremely hot. Thus, I give it 3 stars net.

If you REALLY need a good backplane adapter for hard drives, I'm afraid the only good ones come with the WD VelociRaptors which cost $150+.For SSDs, though, it is adequate. Also, note that Icy Dock has a newer, cheaper/simpler product for SSDs that I have not used.

Product Description:
ICY DOCKs MB882 series can convert most of 2.5 SATA and SSD hard drive into a 3.5 SATA drive. It has enough ventilation to keep the 2.5 drive cool and can protect your drive. Installing a 2.5 drive requires no screws or tool whatsoever. Whether you use a SATA or SSD drive, you will maintain the transfer speed while using this case. With this converter, mounting a 2.5 drive into a desktop will be simple without having to purchase any special attachments or systems, allowing more convenience in recovering data from laptops or OS boot up onto a desktop. It is very convenient for gamers and power users who expect SSD speed on their home/ office computers. Mostly, it is designed to fit into most common PC cases, 3.5 HDD duplicator, 3.5 SATA HDD enclosure, mobile rack, and backplane modules without having to purchase any attachments for the 2.5 drives. This state-of-the-art case will revolutionize the way 2.5 drives are presently used.

Hitachi Deskstar 3.5' 1TB 7200RPM SATA II 16MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S00163
Average Reviews:

This drive was quite loud when I installed it, but that was because AAM was turned off and the value was locked at the loudest setting. Once I changed it to the quiet setting with the Hitachi Feature Tool, it worked much quieter.

Pros:

- This is a very fast drive. I got transfer rate of 135MB/s at the outer edge of the disk, dropping off to around 65MB/s at the inner tracks
- Very quiet once the AAM is enabled and set to the quiet value
- It is a 2-platter design, which is more energy efficient and theoretically less prone to head crashes
- Retail packaging means you are not taking a chance of whether a bare drive will be packaged properly, and a cable is included as well.

Cons:

- It is fairly loud out of the box with AAM turned off. It is a low-pitch rumbling instead of clicks when seeking
- Does not come with backup/imaging software in the box like similar Seagate/Western digital retail drives.

I purchased this HDD box as a replacement for the stock plastic external HDD box from WD that had a 1TB green drive inside. The WD box developed a problem with the USB connector on it's PCB, and rather then jump through all the hoops to send the unit in under warranty, I decided to buy the Ineo box and transfer the hard drive (which is fully functional). The Ineo box is a vast improvement over the stock WD plastic box. The WD box had no ventilation holes whatsoever, plus the fact that it was made of plastic means the HDD was guaranteed to run hot. The Ineo box, on the other hand, has one side that is completely made of a metal mesh screen to ensure that the HDD can easily dissipate heat. And the hard drive mounting tray and box are made of metal, which also helps with heat dissipation.

The fit, finish, and design of the Ineo box are very well done. The instructions are well illustrated and written, and are very easy to follow. Total installation time was about 10 minutes. The only tool you'll need is a small Philips screwdriver. There is only one screw that holds the hard drive tray in the housing. Once you remove that, the tray slides out and you install the HDD into the tray with four screws, attach the appropriate cables (IDE or SATA), and slide the tray assembly back into the housing, tighten the one screw on the side, and your done. Two things to be aware of though: 1)when I went to slide the tray back in it seemed to get hung up on the housing, so don't force it, take your time and it'll go in just fine, 2)if you're installing a SATA drive be aware that the SATA cable is a tight fit and it helps to bend it to the appropriate curvature before you install it, and you may have to press down on it slightly to get it to clear the mesh screen when sliding the tray back in.

The other nice thing about this Ineo enclosure is that they even include a eSATA cable, which was a big help for me (nothing extra to have to buy). I connected the drive to my XP desktop, formatted it, and it was good to go. I currently have the Ineo hooked up to an Asus O!Play HDP-R1 - Digital multimedia receiver with the eSATA cable to play DVD ISO files, and it works excellent. The drive runs nice and quiet and cool. If you're looking for a well built external hard drive enclosure that will keep your HDD cool, I would definitely recommend this Ineo unit. I will definitely be buying a couple more of these!

Vantec NexStar 3 NST-360SU-BK 3.5 inch SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure
Average Reviews:

I bought a NexStar enclosure early last month to use a 250GB Seagate SATA internal HD I'd mistakenly bought last year when looking for the older IDE sort.Until finding reference to SATA ensclosures with USB 2.0 attachments, I thought I only had the option of putting the SATA drive in my G-5.

The enclosure went together quickly (including connecting a separate light cable) and the SATA HD using just the USB cable popped onto the screen to be initialized just like an IDE drive.Though it can be inferred from the product description that this NexStar enclosure will work with USB connections at the slower USB 2.0 speed, I'll just make it clear that this product comes with a SATA cable that allows faster SATA data rates in the case of you having such a SATA port in your computer--but if not, the enclosure will allow you to operate a SATA HD with the USB connection alone.Very handy--as it allows you to replace SATA drives from a a Apple G-5 and install the old one in the SATA enclosure to make use of the data.Nice way to upgrade and still use the old HD.

Haven't run the enclosure long enough to comment on heat issues.I'm inclined to run external HD's for a limited time as they are needed for back-up, so any heat build up would likely be avoided if it is an issue at all.The NexStar appears to be made of sheet metal and is not nearly as robust as Acomdata's aluminum brick enclosure--but Acomdata doesn't seem to offer a SATA to USB enclosure.

USB 2.0 to SATA + IDE (2.5 / 3.5 / 5.25") Cable Adapter Review

USB 2.0 to SATA + IDE Cable Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These adapters are very handy. They support both 3.5 and 2.5 IDE and SATA drives. They are a tiny bit finicky. You must power up the drive with the supplied AC adapter BEFORE you plug the USB cable into the computer. If you don't do this, my personal experience has been that the attached device may not be recognized by the host computer.

Much less expensive and far more versatile than most external enclosures. Also quicker to use. However, not a particularly glamorous way to connect your drives.

Overall, a very effective and inexpensive solution to hanging a SATA or IDE drive on your computer via a USB 2.0 port.

The prices are very compatible for both drives and are all carried 3 years warranty. However I'd rather choose Maxtor in the future. The Maxtor drives have very good utility and are very user friendly, they are easy to install and come with software to help get them partitioned and formatted even you are a first time user. Ultra ATA/133 interface with 8MB Cache makes the drive 20% faster than the regular one (2MB Cache size).Have used Maxtor in many years and never had a failure. Great Drive!

I have recently received this item and am currently waiting for 4 2TB drives to arrive to load it up.

EDITI installed the 2 TB drives - again no problem and am in the process of copying over about 1.5TB of data.

In the meantime I put 3 500MB drives in that I have laying around and set it up as Raid 5.Set up was a breeze and the unit was ready for data within minutes.
I connected it with the firewire 800 interface.

I copied over about 300 megs of music and photos and the typical copy speed was around 30 meg/s.

Subsequent read speeds were a little higher as was to be expected.

I have just artificially caused and error my removing one drive.Within a minute or so the alarm sounded to alert me to the failure. The data was still intact and available.I replaced the drive and the raid in now rebuilding.

EDIT - It took about 45 minutes or so to rebuild the RAID with about 300 meg of data.

The unit construction is very solid and has a nice look and feel - all metal - no plastic.

When I first powered it up the fans were running very loudly, but in a minute or so they stabilized and the unit is very quiet - about the same noise as my Imac.

Overall I am very satisfied and if it continues this way the I will purchase another unit.

I paired this with a Western Digital WD5000AAKS.

Pros:

*Well built, professional looking enclosure.

*Bright blue Power on indicator on the front of the enclosure which flashes red (well it's kind of pink actually) to indicate read/write activity.

*Average Read/Write speeds of 29 MB/s via USB 2.0 interface.

Cons:

*Gets quite warm after 1 hour. It lacks proper ventilation.

*Unlike my other cheaper USB enclosure, it does not provide Disk information, temperature, S.M.A.R.T. or other performance information to my Disk Drive monitoring software. Nowadays this information is very important for keeping watch on the status of your drives thereby safeguarding your data.

I should mention that while this lack of information could sometimes be the fault of the installed drive, I've never seen an instance where the faulty drive failed to register it's model number with the software. In this case the drive just registers the as "DMI Ultra HDD (500 GB)" which leads me to believe that the USB interface controller used in the case is at fault. That's a little disappointing really.
