All the fans spin up to normal speed, the DVD burners cycle as normal, the 5v standby light is glowing on the motherboard, and there are no post code beeps of any kind. Step #1 Go to the Intel web site and follow their handy dandy diagnostic steps. All signs point to the motherboard being bad. Step #2 Get on the phone with Intel Support and go through all the diagnostic steps again (I think they have trust issues). Step #3 Intel agrees and gives me an RMA to trade in the motherboard. Step #4 Ten days later, install the new motherboard, exact same results (frustration is knocking on the door but I refuse to answer). Step #5 Call Intel and work through all the diagnostic steps with Intel on the phone (they were very patient this time). We agree that it has to be the CPU. Step #6 Contact Tiger Direct to replace the CPU. Just one little problem, this CPU is no longer offered. The folks at Tiger Direct take about 60 seconds to decide to replace this CPU with a faster CPU that is still compatable with the motherboard (when is the last time you got a free upgrade with free shipping included??). Step #7 Installed the new CPU and got the same results again. Frustration did not need to knock, I was there. Step #8 By process of elimination it has to be the power supply, but I'm not wasting any more time or money without being sure. That is when I ordered this Digital Power Supply Tester. Step #9 Within 2 minutes of receiving this tester I was fully aware of exactly why the machine would no longer boot and everything else was still good. This tester immediately beeped a warning signal and showed that the 12 volt rail in the power supply was only putting out 11.2 volts. The saftey built into the harddrives would not allow the drives to spin up and therefore no boot. As you may have guessed, this power supply tester is now the most important PC tool in the box.
