(More customer reviews)When I built my new PC a few months back this memory was very expensive so I went with decent 800mhz ddr2 non SLI compliant. I was sad when I ran the service score and every aspect of the PC was at 5.9 excelt memory which was at 4.3. After installing this memory and changing the settings in the bios I was able to get to a 5.7. Since some of the software I run does not work well with a 64 bit system OS I need to stick with 4gigs. The memory its self is outstanding. I am fairly sure if I overclock it (currently at 0% OC) I would get a 5.9 (max score). Since Vista is a memory hog this is a plus. I may even need to try it on my xp pro and linux systems later to see how well it works (or doesnt).

(More customer reviews)It's been pretty hot in Chicago these past two weeks and our central air conditioning unit is giving up the ghost. Too bad the installation of the new central air has been cancelled twice so far. So, it's been pretty warm inside. Not entirely without air conditioning, but the old unit just isn't up to the job any more.

So I picked up this little Lasko fan - and am I glad I did!

I used to have a floor model near my work table and it was always blowing papers off the table or making them flap endlessly - and even at its lowest speed, it was like sitting in a hurricane.

Not with the Lasko. Its grandiose name "PLATINUM Desktop Wind Tower" should be replaced with something like "Personal Cooler" - because that is what it does.

The unit is about six inches in diameter and just shy of 14 inches high. The plastic exterior is in the ubiquitous "platinum" so familiar to computer users. Build quality is surprisingly high. The two switches, one for power and the other to control oscillation, feel firm. My only complaint is that the power cord is on the short side: it should be at least a foot longer and preferably two feet longer, but that is a small quibble. The plug is fused, which isa plus and a minus. If the fuse in the plug blows, you have to return the unit to an authorized service center, wherever that might be, for however long it would take. The bottom of the unit apparently detaches with four screws, so a do-it-yourself repair may be feasible. Personally, at this price, if it broke, I'd be inclined to just buy a eplacement, despite the one-year warranty.

The fan has three speeds, none of which will blow you away. All are, in fact, comfortable. Right now, shirtless and with room temperature edging into the mid-70s (at Midnight!), the low speed is very comfortable. Even at its highest speed, this fan is not unreasonably noisy, which is nice.

The top of the unit is divided into two sections. Each may be oriented in a different direction.

The sections can be left stationary or set to oscillate. There is one oscillation speed. Oscillation covers abouta 60 degree arc. If you adjust each segment at a slightly different angle, you can increase the apparent oscillation arc to about 75 degrees or so.

Overall, this is a very nice summer addition to my desktop. For the price, it would be hard to beat.

(More customer reviews)Most 12v/5v power supplies carry a maximum of 2 amps on the 12 volt side. This is more than enough to power virtually any modern hard drive during its steady state operation, but some require more than that to spin up. If you use with any frequency the USB hard drive adapters meant to accompany this product, then you'll eventually encounter such a case, which is evidenced by a disturbing clicking noise not dissimilar from a truly finished hard drive. This 5A power supply is the only one I found that carries more than 2 amps on the 12V side, which is more than enough to handle your run-of-the-mill consumer level device. Now whether it'll power on a five platter Barracuda...you're on your own with that.

Consider the five star rating provisional. If it continues to work as-is then the rating stands. However, these things tend to start failing after a year or two, which isn't surprising due to their ordinarily cheap construction. This one seems sturdier than average, however, both in weight and quality of plastic casing. I've opened packages where the "clam shell" casing had detached during shipping or warehousing, though actually seeing what goes on electronically in modern power supplies is far more worrisome than whatever happens with the cosmetic housing. The included power cord is of the thicker variety usually seen with PCs rather than the thinner, cheaper kind usually shipped with these. Also included is a velcro strap, which is a nice touch. The informational sticker includes the distributor's website, which could come in handy if you forgot where it came from or it gets delisted from Amazon.

Note that like most (all?) of these, this power adapter lacks a 3.3V line, but I've never seen a case where it was necessary. If you somehow do need this or just don't want to be bothered purchasing something like this, a regular old PC power supply will naturally power the hard drive, but, unfortunately, this means soldering or splicing a power switch or "hotwiring" an ATX supply, but, if you can find one, AT supplies have the switch built in. What you gain in budget and/or ingenuity you'll lose in portability, aesthetics, power consumption, and noise level, however.

Given that this particular supply seems to offer a premium at virtually the same price others are sold, this purchase seems like a no-brainer. The downside, however, is that you've probably doubled your cost for the function and now have an extra brick lying around. Personally, I use the old supply to power a drive with known low power consumption. It functions as a "bare" fixed file repository accessed via ESATA -> SATA cable. Enclosures just add heat and don't do anything meaningful to absorb shock, so why not?

Unfortunately, I have not found a reliable method to anticipate which hard drives require more than 2A current. Many three platter drives power on fine within the limit, but I have a single platter drive that does not. While SATA drives supposedly consume less power than their IDE ancestors, this doesn't seem to offer any guarantees. The ratings manufacturers publish refer to steady state operation, not spin up. Off the record, in limited testing, Seagate seems to have the most difficulty spinning up, but I have a disproportionate number of Seagate drives in my sample set so that skews my observation. Western Digital Green drives seem best of breed in this regard. The intarwebs say it can accomplish spin up with a mere 1.8 amps, which is nearly an entire amp less than the average, which seems to be in the 2.4-2.8 range.

(More customer reviews)I can't believe how well this adapter works. I bought it for my ASUS netbook... the range on the wireless adapter isn't fantastic and won't work in our basement family room. (the batcave) Even my regular laptop only gets one bar in the batcave, but the netbook couldn't even pick up the signal from my router on the main floor. I tried a Belkin extended range wireless usb adapter. It was no better than the wifi adapter in the netbook and the driver install blew away the setup for the internal router in the netbook without warning. After a quick system restore, I repackaged and returned the Belkin and ordered the GSky with panel antenna. I just installed it in less than 5 minutes with no harm to my existing wireless adapter setup and the range is unbelievable. I am getting all bars (excellent signal) in the batcave. I can't wait to try it downtown to see how many signals I can get now. If you have a basement family room... this is the $20 answer to your problem. The range on this thing is fantastic and so is the price.

It was inexpensive (around $16) and it works just fine. The mouse is the same size and has the same features (left and right click buttons and scroll wheel) as a standard mouse and it fits perfectly in my hand. I got this mouse because it is easier than using the mouse pad on my laptop. Plus, it's really cute because the car lights actually light up and emit a blue-colored light. I had to replace the power supply on my HP PC. It was easy to install and worked... Until recently, this week, I noticed that one of the fans in my HP sounded like the bearings were going... Well I took the cover off, and put my ear up to the CPU fan, processor fan and noticed that the fan in the power supply was making the noise. I had the power supply for 3 months and the fan is going. I probably can not get my money back and it is not worth it to take the power supply apart to replace the fan (since something else may decide to break on it)... (I did replace a power supply fan on a previous NEC PC that I owned however...)I am going to be buying a better power supply...

I know that electronic parts use cheap parts and the original power supply in my HP lasted 2.75 years. In my Dell desktop, it was around 2 years (and in one of my work places, the IT was replacing a lot of power supplies) In the old days, you did not have to replace power supplies as you do today. But, a power supply should not be having problems at the 3 month time period...

PROS:

Great value for the price
Good features and mid-level graphics

CONS:

Very light weight WIRED usb Keyboard
Very light weight WIRED usb Mouse (together they feel flimsy and 'cheap')
Oddly, the 1T HDD runs at 5400 RPMs rather than at 7200RPMs.
HP insists on using up much of the space on proprietary drives that few, if anybody, will purchase
SHAME ON HP for not including a recovery disk - This should be always included with purchase.

This computer has and is performing better than I had expected.It actually does not run much slower than my Core I7 extreme 975 intel processor computer.Plenty of storage space on this computer.I also find the case is acceptable, attractively if plainly styled.Lots of connectivity, lots of USB ports, the quad core processor blows away intensive applications better than I expected.I am very surprised that this computer is no longer available.It is the perfect blend of features, performance and price.The reason I have given this computer a rating of 4 rather than 5, after raving about it, is that this system, as have previous HP models at this price point, should have included a wireless keyboard and mouse.This is not a barebone, cheapo computer, but a full media center system.I also found it very odd to use a 5400 RPM hard drive, rather than a 7200RPM drive.Why?I know the 5400rpm is probably a little cheaper, but not by much, and a 5400 RPM would also save on power, maybe allowing for a lower power supply point, but that also adds limits to the purchaser that I am not very happy about.At this level, HP, a wireless keyboard and mouse AND a 7200 RPM hard drive should be expected. Since my monitor is a 28" I have to keep some distance away from it, therefore a wired mouse/keyboard is simply unacceptable and useless.And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, manufacturers should include the recovery disk as the computer purchaser has purchased this copy of windows.

This computer would be perfect for most users.It is not only a little powerhouse, but is a full featured media center PC with a TV tuner and the ability to burn DVDs.HP, as well as most other mainstream manufacturers, load up the computer with their proprietary software, as well as things like AOL and Norton, etc.Just delete off all the crap, clean up the registry, and you'll have an outstanding desktop computer.

A word about Beach Camera.Beach Camera was the vendor that sold me and shipped me the computer through Amazon.They invoiced me quickly and shipped quickly, the computer arriving safely and working flawlessly out of the box.Not all that common these days when computers have so many components that can go wrong as well as the shakeup the computer takes during shiipping.It arrived flawlessly and worked perfectly.Thank you Beach Camera.

I highly recommend this computer.My main computer is a new core i7 extreme 975, 12g of DDR3 RAM running at 1600mhz, a HD 4870x2 graphics card; it cost me over $3000!This computer here, costing $949.00, gives me near the same functionality as my main computer at 1/3rd the cost!!!

Pros: well built, great speakers, overclockable 5730 (over 10000 3Dmarks in '06 after overclock), BEAUTIFUL screen, very well "thought out", not much bloatware and what is there is pretty useful, great button placement, keyboard feel, and mouse pad (especially the trackball mode on mousepad.) AMAZING lack of ghosting using supplied glasses, almost none using leftover theater glasses.

Cons: only 1: resolution. For games in 3D, it's.. fine. You lose half your vertical resolution, but when the screen is in motion you don't really notice (especially on movies) but if your goal is 3D photography, forget it. 1/2 of 768 is completely unusable for any 3D photography work: period.

All in all, a beautiful powerhouse with a great design, but the screen is the weak point. I'd wait for the HP 17" envy 3d solution: faster graphics to support the full 1080p rez.

Logitech Z340 2.1 Computer Speakers (3-Speaker, Black) Review

(More customer reviews)For the price, it is difficult to beat this set of speakers. Sure, Logitech is an unlikely contestant in this arena, but it easily beats any others near this set's low price. Right off the bat, you will notice that there is a power button, volume control knob and headphone jack on the right speaker. Some speakers in this price range inconveniently put the volume control and power button on the subwoofer (which is supposed to be placed out of sight and reach) and most lack a headphone jack. Incidentally, plugging in headphones automatically mutes the speakers - nice.
That said, the sound quality, although better than similar-priced competitors, does have very significant shortcomings compared to speakers costing just a few dollars more. Most noticeably, the satellite speakers utilize a single cone each - thus the treble is slightly rolled off, giving a slightly "hollow" sound compared to systems which boast a seperate tweeter and midrange. Similarly, the bass unit, although impressive in its ability to pump out loud volumes, is also rolled off - the rating of 35Hz is too optimistic. My measurements show a more realistic rating of 50Hz, even after putting the subwoofer in a corner which should result in the most reinforcement of low frequencies. The subwoofer cabinet is made of wood, so what bass it does produce is tight and clean.
If you can afford it, doubling your budget can buy satellites with seperate mid-range and tweeter drivers that will give significantly better sound. But for the penny-pincher, look no further.

(More customer reviews)I am giving this case a five star review because I have built a few computers over the years and by far Thermaltake makes the best cases I have ever worked with. The case is designed and constructed to Thermaltake's high standards and I am not disappointed in this case. MY PROBLEM, however, is the fact that Amazon describes this case a ATX/microATX. THIS CASE IS NOT ATX SIZED! From the documents included with the case it is designed for either microATX or miniITX form factor motherboards. The ONLY thing that is ATX sized is power supply opening. Again, Amazon is not the only company to make this mistake as I checked out the same case on other websites and they too list this as an ATX case. So if you are considering this case please keep this in mind. Otherwise this case is very nice and has a great many features I like such as tool-less opening, sturdy construction, and great air flow over components.

PPA 1455 - Sound card - 48 kHz - 5.1 - USB Review

(More customer reviews)If you play a DVD with 5.1 channel surround sound on your computer, this box can decode it to give you the 6 analog channels. Surprisingly, the optical link would have only the L/R channels.Why they would strip part of the digital audio and not let people simply pass it on to a home audio system is hard to understand. Unfortunately, that was the reason I bought this device, and I missed the fine prints.I saw the heading "6 Channel External Sound" and that it has optical output, never imagined that the 6 channel sound was only in analog and not in digital. This caveat is stated in the last line of the description, very easy to overlook if you're not looking for it, especially when you don't think that anyone would design it that way. So I have to return this one and get something else.

Other than this deficiency, this external sound card works just fine with my Vista64 HP laptop. The software installation was easy, no conflict with the internal nVideo audio. They coexist just fine, but you do have to go into Control_Panel/Sound to select which one is the default device. Some media player would feed audio to both devices, but many would only serve the default one.
