I buy, sell, and repair computers for a living, so alot of laptops pass through my hands. In the last year, I have personally owned Compaqs, Dells, IBMs, Acers, Sonys, and other laptops; including Pentium 3m, AMD Athlon XPm, and Pentium 4m models. I have held onto my T40 for sevral reasons: size, portability, battery life, speed, cost, reliability.. the list is endless! I even tried to upgrade to a Z60 a few months ago (because of the fingerprint reader, built-in sd card reader, 2.0ghz cpu, etc..) but decided to keep the T40 and re-sell the newer Z60 for the same price I bought it for (something I NEVER do, I always try to turn a profit!!!)
The Z60 was nice, but not as fast as my t40... the Dells and Compaqs and Sonys don't even come close to either. I use Verizon Mobile Broadband, andalso own several wireless-g usb adapters, so the built-in wireless-b card doesn't bother me- even when I do use it, it's plenty fast (11 mbps is faster than most cable connections anyway; unless you're networking and streaming multimedia between a few pc's it should be more than enough!!!)
Mine also has gigabit ethernet, so on the rare occasion that I plug in, it's great...
I upgraded my t40 to 2 gigs of ram for $140, by watching Staples like a hawk and catching 1 gig ddr for $70 each on sale, then I sold my original 512 for $30, so it really only cost $110.

Product Description:
Built specifically for mobile business professionals, the refurbished IBM ThinkPad T40 notebook PC offers top-of-the-line functionality at a price that's easy on the wallet. The notebook is highly portable at just under 5 pounds, with an average battery life of up to 7.5 hours. Even better, it features a 1.5 GHz Intel Centrino processor that's speedy enough for most gaming and multimedia applications. The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage and features the latest in power-saving technologies, letting you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also boasts 512 MB of built-in memory--a good start for most power users. You can even expand it up to 2 GB (1,024 MB x 2) should you want to max out the processing power. To make the computer more affordable for the average user, IBM included a relatively small 40 GB hard drive, which still offers more than enough room for home productivity software, family photos, and a decent-sized audio library despite its compact size.
The ThinkPad T40's video and graphics are powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon card and 32 MB of video RAM. It's a solid card for rendering 3D images, and is powerful enough for most demanding business productivity software, but serious gamers will likely want to upgrade. Meanwhile, the 14.1-inch TFT active matrix screen features a native 1,024 x 768 resolution. Audio-wise, the computer boasts an integrated audio card and a pair of internal stereo speakers. And to ensure that you have access to CDs and DVD movies while on the road, the notebook offers a DVD-ROM drive, which writes and reads CDs at 24x, rewrites CDs at 10x, and reads DVDs at 8x. The drive offers an ideal way to bring along additional data or audio/video files when on a business trip. Rounding out the peripheral set is an 86-key keyboard and an UltraNav dual-pointing touch pad.
Connectivity options aren't vast, but should satisfy most business users. Most importantly for mobile users, the unit includes an integrated wireless LAN that's compatible with high-speed 802.11b networks, along with traditional 10/100 Ethernet support. Other jacks include two USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals, from digital cameras to MP3 players, a parallel port, a CRT monitor port, one S-video out, two audio ports (headphone jack and mic in), one PCMCIA (PC card) Type III slot (which can also accommodate two Type I or II cards), and built-in RJ-11 and RJ-45 connectors for telephony and LAN connections.
Additional features include an embedded security subsystem, which allows users to authenticate and encrypt data communications; a built-in 56k modem; and a standard nine-cell rechargeable lithium ion battery. The notebook comes preloaded with Windows XP Pro (which includes Microsoft's IIS Web server, backup and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features), along with such applications as Norton AntiVirus 2004, InterVideo WinDVD, and Sonic RecordNow.
The T40 measures 12.2 by 1 by 10 inches (W x H x D) and comes with a 90-day warranty provided by Metro Business Systems.
