The Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable Hard Drive is great for on-the-go file transfers and backing up your PC.I have a 500 GB Western Digital Passport drive and the size of both drives is almost exactly the same.I've yet to test on a USB 3.0 (unfortunately, my Mac does not have that) but the transfer speed is very quick with USB 2.0.My only minor quibble is that the included USB cable has a proprietary cable. It's probably only about 18" long, so keep that in mind when deciding if this is the right hard drive for you... or add the cost of a longer proprietary cable into the price, if needed.

Registration was fast and simple. If you own a Mac you have two choices on how to use the drive. The first is "Mac and PC" mode - which allows you to exchange files between Mac and PC without reformatting the drive."Requires installation of included Paragon NTFS For Mac driver to enable two-way Mac OS and Windows use. Some applications, including Time Machine and the included Mac backup software from Seagate will not work since they cannot make us of a drive that uses the Windows (NTFS) system.""Mac Only" mode will "erase the drive to prepare it for us with all Mac applications, including Time Machine and the included Mac backup software from Seagate.Your included Seagate software bundle will be restored to the drive."

I went with the Mac only option so I could utilize the Time Machine feature of the Mac.It pops up a prompt to ask you if you want to set the FreeAgent GoFlex Drive as your Time Machine backup drive. My laptop computer has a 500GB hard drive with about 60 GB of free space. I was shocked when the following message popped up:"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 518.79 GB but only 499.29 GB are available.Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required for storage backups."

I went back and ran the Seagate installer again, it made me register a 2nd time, and then I picked the option where I can use the drive between mac & PC.I will have to use a larger (750 GB or 1 TB) drive with Time Machine. But this hard drive is great for the use of sharing files with family & friends, especially with its fast transfer speeds.
