(More customer reviews)Paired with Apple's Time Machine backup software (which is part of the current OS X.5 operating system), backup are a breeze!I bought this to use with my MacBook which lives in the living room most of the time but does move around.When I want to run a backup, I just plug in the USB cable from the hard drive to my Mac and the rest is automatic.If you would be using this with a desktop model, you could leave it connected all the time. I just hook it up every few days and it backs up everything that's changed on my computer.(Also, part of the great thing about Time Machine is that it keeps more than just the most recent backup.It keeps all the past backups as well until you start running out of space.)

Also, this drive is whisper quiet which is great since I keep it in the living room.Don't notice it at all!

(More customer reviews)This drive was quite loud when I installed it, but that was because AAM was turned off and the value was locked at the loudest setting. Once I changed it to the quiet setting with the Hitachi Feature Tool, it worked much quieter.

Pros:

- This is a very fast drive. I got transfer rate of 135MB/s at the outer edge of the disk, dropping off to around 65MB/s at the inner tracks
- Very quiet once the AAM is enabled and set to the quiet value
- It is a 2-platter design, which is more energy efficient and theoretically less prone to head crashes
- Retail packaging means you are not taking a chance of whether a bare drive will be packaged properly, and a cable is included as well.

Cons:

- It is fairly loud out of the box with AAM turned off. It is a low-pitch rumbling instead of clicks when seeking
- Does not come with backup/imaging software in the box like similar Seagate/Western digital retail drives.

(More customer reviews)I have recently received this item and am currently waiting for 4 2TB drives to arrive to load it up.

EDITI installed the 2 TB drives - again no problem and am in the process of copying over about 1.5TB of data.

In the meantime I put 3 500MB drives in that I have laying around and set it up as Raid 5.Set up was a breeze and the unit was ready for data within minutes.
I connected it with the firewire 800 interface.

I copied over about 300 megs of music and photos and the typical copy speed was around 30 meg/s.

Subsequent read speeds were a little higher as was to be expected.

I have just artificially caused and error my removing one drive.Within a minute or so the alarm sounded to alert me to the failure.The data was still intact and available.I replaced the drive and the raid in now rebuilding.

EDIT - It took about 45 minutes or so to rebuild the RAID with about 300 meg of data.

The unit construction is very solid and has a nice look and feel - all metal - no plastic.

When I first powered it up the fans were running very loudly, but in a minute or so they stabilized and the unit is very quiet - about the same noise as my Imac.

Overall I am very satisfied and if it continues this way the I will purchase another unit.

(More customer reviews)After reading the white papers and reviews available for this drive it was clearly not simply a replacement drive, but an upgrade.

The read-write speeds are incredible. Considering the configuration of the number - and the draw - of internal components within my systems; any additional draw on power supplies are calculated. Here it was negligible. In the first workstation I installed one of these, heat is a major consideration. This drive produced practically no heat compared to any drive I've used.

I wanted to wait for a period prior to writing a review to have the drive tested over time in a number of computers to see how it performed over time. The unit has proven a reliable high performance drive across the board.

As when reading reviews, each reader is looking to see if one covers their specific needs. I will disclose the specifics of my use. These drives are currently being run in Powermac G5s and Mac Pros. I have not tested this drive type in a PC. My use is in film and video post production, primarily visual effects. So the drives are genuinely tested. Massive files are written to from them. They are used for everything from being the drives with the OS and softs on them, to rendering.

While I'm sure they would perform as well in a PC, in Macs it has performed brilliantly.

(More customer reviews)When I took this out of the box, two things immediately struck me. One: how small it is. Two: the solid construction and brushed aluminum finish. I was really impressed by the quality and craftsmanship of this product. That might sound like a strange thing to say, but this drive looks and feels like quality stuff.

It's a full 2 inches shorter than a 1 TB Iomega drive I bought just 1 week before. I own several other drives with far less capacity, and this drive is even smaller than most of those. The size of 2 bricks stacked on top of each other (and about as heavy), this drive sits elegantly on top of the desk and doesn't take up a lot of space. It looks simple and classy with its solid metal case. On the back, the 5 cm fan can be turned on and off via a separate switch. The power plug is a standard round type insert, so if you somehow manage to lose it, you can easily buy a replacement. It doesn't have specially constructed pins that can break or bend.

As for reliability and speed, it is too early to judge. But I mainly bought this as a backup unit for my movies, so I am not being very demanding on the unit. I am very happy with this purchase and will recommend it to others.

** UPDATE - OCT 5 2008 **

I managed to outgrow the 1TB capacity and have acquired a few more 1TB single drive external hard drives in the last 3 months for my growing storage needs. With 1TB drives falling in price to about $130, I decided to hack this drive to see if I could make it into a 2TB unit. 2TB is the maximum volume size FAT-32 can support, and 1TB is the biggest sized SATA drive you can buy right now.

I'm pleased to report that this is very hackable and easy. Swapping out the drives take 5 minutes: just undo 4 screws in the back, slide out the drive bay, and swap out the 2 SATA drives inside with 2 new 1TB drives (each held in by 4 additional screws). Zip the patient back up, format and you've got yourself a new 2TB storage device. I formated this for FAT-32 because I want maximum compatibility in my diverse home network. From my Mac, formatting took about a minute or less. If you don't need this, you can go w/ NTFS.

Do this at your own risk, obviously, as this will void your warranty.

I originally purchased one of these as a companion to a Mac Mini.But it has been such a spacious and reliable drive that I have purchased more for different machines including my Windows laptop.And the built in USB hub is a nice touch.It is so convenient I don't know why it is not a standard feature of all external hard drives.I highly recommend for use with PCs or Macs.

If you do use it with a Mac Mini, I have a recommendation.Somewhere in the documentation I read where it suggested to stack the MiniMax under the Mac Mini.While it does fit and stacks nicely, it gets way to hot.I would recommend putting them side by side.

While I can't refute other reviewers' experiences, I can share my own.I now own 6 of these drives, one 500 gig and five 1 terabyte models that I have purchased gradually over the past year and a half.I'm actually here to buy two more.They all were shipped the next day and arrived from Amazon in new condition.And all 6 of them are still running flawlessly.I still highly recommend this drive.

(More customer reviews)Apparently the previous reviewer didn't understand this is the bare drive version.Amazon will be happy to sell you the package version of the drive for an additional $20 or so, if you need or want screws or cables.

I put the drive in an Antec MX-1 USB/e-SATA 3.5-Inch Hard Drive Enclosure, then connected to the DVR's eSATA port and rebooted.The process takes a couple of minutes and couldn't be easier.

The downsize were (1) it is a very noisy drive when READ/WRITE operation, and (2) there is a periodic humming sound, like every 5 seconds it max out then come down. It is annoying. (More customer reviews)I know, I know. You're upset because this "Intellipower" concept allows hard drive speeds as low as 5400 rpm, but can be as high as 7200 rpm. So which is it- high performing drive or budget friendly consumer class model? It's both. This new variable spin speed system is absolutely transparent in operation. You don'tnotice lag, you don't hear odd sounds; quite the opposite, this drive is whisper quiet. It's a fast drive, has boatloads of space, and is priced pretty reasonably to boot. If you are looking for all out insane speed, get a Raptor-X or a 15K RPM SCSI setup. If you want a drive that will boot fast, hold your whole iTunes library and maybe even help Mother Nature a little bit, here's your answer.

(More customer reviews)WD does listen to its customers. As proof I give you their new 1TB SE portable hard drive. No nasty bloatware gumming up the works, no unreliable connectivity. Just a plain simple drive that holds a massive amount of data in a suprisingly small unit. See we consumers can make a difference! WD congratulations on recognizing that "the customer is always right" even if it took a while for it to sink in. I'll be buying more WD products again, starting with another one of these.

UPDATE: I have had 2 of these drives for about a month now and decided I could offer more input to those of you trying to decide on a storage solution. We'll start with the CONS: I bought 2 of these drives and felt I had to return 1 because it had a loose usb port on the drive. The mini USB cable fits very snug in this port and perhaps WD over compensated for early reviews that the stability of the cable was a problem. The drive still functioned, but I was uncomfortable with the fact that the port was not solid after several uses. This is why I've changed my rating from 5 to 4 stars. (By the way return through Amazon was simple and pain free.) Now the PROS: I have kept the second drive and it is performing flawlessly. I'm hoping the port issue was just that particular unit, because I REALLY like this drive. The best thing about it is that WD kept it SIMPLE. There is no bloatware, just a vast amount of storage space! I considered Seagate, but all of their portable drives now appear to have a backup bloatware preinstalled and I don't need or WANT that. The WD elements se 1tb drive is perfect for storing my music, pictures and video to bring with me anywhere I go, and it won't fill up any time soon! Finally, it is the SMALLEST 1TB DRIVE I have seen measuring only about 3" x 4.5" x 0.9".

(More customer reviews)It has been the best purchase for a hard drive I've ever had. The main reason why I wanted to go for minimax is because I wanted a stackable hd for my Apple Minimac. Moreover I have a huge library of music and video files which I have been collecting for several years. Thankfully I havenot lost any of it. I did come across a few options from Seagate and Western Digital and also used them earlier. I wanted to try out the Iomega hard drive because some of my gadget-crazy friends had this. They do not select a hometheater or a flash drive or a hard drive in a frenzy. So on their recommendation, I went in for iomega minimax hard drive. I am happy that I am enjoying the huge space of 1 TB available to store all my media files. And it looks good than it does in the images. To begin with, I dint even have an initializing trouble - it installed easy and far quieter compared to most other hard drives I have ever used. That's indeed some relief to my ears and to those in the same room! With 3 USB ports I cant ask for more. Even as I use two of them at a time, I still have one left. With Firewire 800, the speeds are just right for a 1 TB version. Because of additional space, am also using it to store some professional data which I may need for quick reference when working from my home. The icing on the cake is the price. I am extremely happy that it comes with an easy cost tag. I mean I doubt if I can get a lower price with these functionalities intact!
