(More customer reviews)I bought this after I had two IBM 75GXP drives start showing errors.It is significantly quieter than those drives, measures about the same speed and from my research is more reliable (although my research also uncovered the fact that old floppy disks may be more reliable than the IBM drives).I had no problem installing this in my computer and installing Win 2K on it.The drive comes with a few screws, and an ultra dma cable (use this for best performance).If you are not using Win 2K or Win XP you may have to monkey around with ultra dma modes.
This was a good buy.

I originally ordered a Western Digitial Passport, but I later found that iBooks and PowerBooks don't output enough USB power to run it off USB alone -- this little drive functions just fine powered only by the firewire port.

For OS X 10.5 users, this is a great Time Machine drive. I bought a second for my fiancee.

It is NOT "whisper quiet" as it has plenty of audible seek noise when accessing the drive. Unlike some other brands, there is no Acoustic Level Adjustment software available to reduce seek noise. This is really only a concern for Silent PC enthusiasts, as most PCs cooling fans will drown out the seek noise.

Curiously, the similar WD3200KS is much quieter. Or at least my particular one is.

(More customer reviews)The product is exactly as described and shipped very quickly (with regular ups shipping it arrived next day).I am extremely pleased with the overall transaction and quality of the product.I would recommend it.One issue that was addressed by a few users is very valid, this is the usb cable not fitting into the back of the drive well.It will become unmounted, fall out or not be recognized if the drive is bumped or nudged at all.To compensate for this I shaved off about a mm of the plastic around the male connector piece that inserts into the back of the HD and the fit is now excellent.You can practically hold it upside down by the cord and it will not come unplugged.

(More customer reviews)This drive uses reduced power at least partly by varying its rotational speed as needed. It is part of WD's new green power line. I purchased it to replace a failing Maxtor drive that came with the PC.

The WD drive is incredibly quiet. It is also considerably faster than the original drive in the machine. A very noticeable speed boost.

Installation is conventional. Straightforward although I would only recommend doing ANY hard disk upgrade for people with some experience working inside PCs. WD's Data Lifeguard software helps with formatting, partitioning, and copying files from your old drive (assuming it still works).

Obviously, if you want to copy from your old drive you must temporarily install it in your PC after installing the new one. WD's software will copy entire partitions quickly and easily. I used this to copy the system and other partitions to the new drive. It worked reasonably well. Win XP booted correctly. Primary problem was that this got Microsoft Office 2003 a bit confused. Somehow the office update settings got out of sort. Office worked without doing this although Office Update did not. Actually had to clean those registry settings and then uninstall and reinstall Office.

WD's user guide is good although a bit poorly worded in places - the guide for using the software to help set up the drive. E.g. The user guide talks about creating a bootable floppy diskette. I did although it was never needed. It may only be needed if setting up the drive from DOS and your PC cannot boot from CD.

Overall, I strongly recommend this drive. Over the years I have found WD drives to be quiet, fast, and reliable. This continues the record. Remember to erase your old drive!

(More customer reviews)This drive is definetly quite.You can not even hear it.If you have a dell and you install the drive be sure to turn on the sata link on the mother board by pushing F2 and following the instruction to turn on the sata link.If not your computer will not recongnize it.Like mine did.But this drive is simply awsome.For I have tons of music, pictures and games and now I can feel at ease that this drive was for me.This drive also comes with software to partition and drive to drive copy.It did take over an hour and half for the drive to format itself.I would recommend this drive to anyone and sense its more energy efficiant than the other sata 500gb drive gives this drive a two thumbs up.This drive also has the same specs as the other western digital 500gb drive.

The prices are very compatible for both drives and are all carried 3 years warranty.However I'd rather choose Maxtor in the future. The Maxtor drives have very good utility and are very user friendly, they are easy to install and come with software to help get them partitioned and formatted even you are a first time user. Ultra ATA/133 interface with 8MB Cache makes the drive 20% faster than the regular one (2MB Cache size).Have used Maxtor in many years and never had a failure. Great Drive!

(More customer reviews)I have recently received this item and am currently waiting for 4 2TB drives to arrive to load it up.

EDITI installed the 2 TB drives - again no problem and am in the process of copying over about 1.5TB of data.

In the meantime I put 3 500MB drives in that I have laying around and set it up as Raid 5.Set up was a breeze and the unit was ready for data within minutes.
I connected it with the firewire 800 interface.

I copied over about 300 megs of music and photos and the typical copy speed was around 30 meg/s.

Subsequent read speeds were a little higher as was to be expected.

I have just artificially caused and error my removing one drive.Within a minute or so the alarm sounded to alert me to the failure.The data was still intact and available.I replaced the drive and the raid in now rebuilding.

EDIT - It took about 45 minutes or so to rebuild the RAID with about 300 meg of data.

The unit construction is very solid and has a nice look and feel - all metal - no plastic.

When I first powered it up the fans were running very loudly, but in a minute or so they stabilized and the unit is very quiet - about the same noise as my Imac.

Overall I am very satisfied and if it continues this way the I will purchase another unit.

(More customer reviews)I bought this triple interface external hard drive mostly so I can have enough space for my iTunes music library in Apple Lossless format. I saw the older models at the Apple Store and I loved how they looked and the build quality was noticeably better than the external drives from other brands. The blue LED is also a very nice touch.

The triple interface makes it easy to use this drive with any Macs, if you have a Mac with FW800, transfer rate should be blazing fast. I also use it with my work laptop running XP and Gentoo GNU/Linux, no problem using it from all the different OSes.

The drive runs pretty quiet, not sure why others had complained about the noise level. The fan on my PC laptop is much noisier than the LaCie drive.

I highly recommend the LaCie d2 triple interface hard drives to anyone looking for a ton of additional storage for data. It probably wouldn't be wise to install programs on the drive as the transfer rate is still not quite as fast as native IDE, SCSI, SATA, and what not. But it's fast enough for high-quality streaming video, and definitely more than sufficient for music files like AAC, Ogg, and MP3. It is also excellent to use for backing up important data, but note that it only contains a single drive inside and it does not have any sort of redundency.

Original review: This product (WD20000CSRTL) is a regular WD20EADS drive in retail packaging.I was worried it'd be a different drive, but it's not.

Unlike the "OEM" version (WD20EADS) it comes in a big-ish box and with an "install guide" (good if you haven't tried installing a new drive, I guess), an SATA cable and 4 mounting screws.The packaging is obviously more wasteful, but considering the bad packaging reviews the OEM drives get here, maybe its a good thing. If it's the same price as the WD20EADS then I think it's a good deal, even if just for the better packaging.

*Update July 2010* As others have pointed out; they are now selling WD20EARS drives under this ASIN.I use OS X, Linux and FreeBSD so it makes no difference to me; but if you use certain really old versions of Windows (Windows XP) you won't be able to use the full capacity (easily?) or something like that. The recent drives we ordered like this came individually packaged in WD packaging, but with no cables or anything.

*Update September 2010* Depending on the weather, phase of the moon etc you could now get any 2TB Western Digital "green" drive when you order this item.There are other Amazon product IDs that'll give you the same but for lower cost, too - so no longer recommended!!

Asus U3S6 True USB 3.0 & True SATA 6Gb/s Support Motherboard Review

(More customer reviews)Unpacked Asus U3S6 a week ago, after using my Crucial SSD on sata II for a while now since my mobo is Asus Rampage II extreme which doesn't support SATA III naturally, I was overwhelmed to find a product that's affordable and saves me the money of buying a new mobo (300$~) and the time of installing one.

Before you buy this product check if your mobo is supported on manufacturer's website, my rampage ii wasn't listed on the box but after installation it worked for me.

The Reason I gave it 4 stars was the lack of proper instruction, I struggled for 2 days through trial/error until i figured out the following: These are the steps if you want the SSD to have primary OS installed on: (Most likely if you don't follow these steps you will get a blue screen while logging in windows, and keep restarting)

1- Unpack your add-on card.

2- Install the card in a PCIx16 or PCIx4. (DON'T disconnect any old SSD/HDD, or connect anything yet)

3- Turn on your PC. (if you didn't disconnect or connect anything else Windows should start normally)

4- Go to asus website and download the latest driver. (Throw CD from the window)

5- Install the driver, and restart when required. make sure you install both sata and USB controllers before you restart.

6- After installing all the drivers you need, turn off the PC , unplug power cable, open up the case.

7- connect your SSD/HDD containing the Operating system to the SATA1 port on the add-on card. (Mobo will recognize it as SATA0, so don't worry about the sata connected in SATA1 on motherboard chip.

8- turn on your PC, and get into Bios.

9- Look for "Storage Configuration" and change the first drive's name to the OS drive.

10- Go to the boot screen on BIOS and make that drive your first priority.

11- Save and exit, log in windows everything should work now. :)

I purchased this drive to replace the 100gb, 7200 rpm Hitachi that came with my Dell Inspiron 9400.So far the drive has been equally as quiet, a little bit faster and of course much larger.I have noticed none of the vibration that a another reviewer noted.I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro on this hard drive at least five times in order to give the drive a good test copying and modifying files.So far this drive has passed every test with flying colors.

Pros:

Size - 320gb = lots of storage space.

Warranty - 5 year warranty (unheard of in a laptop hard drive)

WD's ShockGuard(tm) technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks during shipping and handling and in daily operation.

WD's SecurePark parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear and improved shock tolerance.

Free-fall sensor - As an added layer of protection, if the drive (or the system it's in) is dropped while in use, WD's free-fall sensor detects that the drive is falling and, in less than 200 milliseconds, parks the head to help prevent damage and data loss.
