(More customer reviews)Just an FYI for Mac users, this unit works just fine with Macs even though it does not specifically list support. I got it for the DVD-RAM capability and Mac OS X (10.4.x) supports that feature natively, so no problems there. I also removed it from the case and installed it in my G5 Tower to replace the stock drive. To be clear, I did not need to remove it, it works as is off the USB 2.0 port, I just wanted less cable clutter. Anyway, works just fine as an internal drive, although I haven't checked booting yet. The stock drive was a Pioneer also, so that may be one reason for good native support.

From what I understand DVD-RAM is one of the few truly archival mediums and this is one of the few Mac compatible (although not officially) DVD drives with DVD-RAM read/write support built in.

(More customer reviews)I bought this to use with a ThinkPad x61s.It works fine in Windows, however using it as a boot device is problematic.At times the laptop doesn't recognize that it is attached. A workaround is to try rebooting over again, entering the bios, exiting the bios, rebooting, and hitting F10.You may have to repeat this process, but eventually it will show up as a bootable device.

Also, the AC adapter plug doesn't quite fit the AC jack, seems like it is the wrong length, but it does work.

(More customer reviews)The reason for four stars is merely the price and quality.Seventy bucks is somewhat steep for a drive that is kind of cheap feeling and the eject disc button is manual and not electronic kind of what is in some laptops.As long as your not rough with it than it should last but the feel of it just shows otherwise.Then again it requires no power supply but it does require two USB ports though you might be able to run with one.The size is about half of a 8.9 inch netbook my wife owns.The biggest surprise I had was when I got it out of the package and it was light and smaller than I even hoped.My wife can fit this in her netbook case which anyone with a netbook knows that not having a disc drive can be an inconvenient one.This is probably one of the best options for small and portable without being too bulky.Great disc drive that does what it should do.

(More customer reviews)Before even opening this product first thing I noticed was how solid and durable the case feels. Definitely high quality workmanship and built to last.

Once it came to putting my existing drive into this case it fit perfectly! The connections fit just fine and there was plenty of room left over to store excess once I put the entire unit together.

The fan is extremely quiet.. almost forgot it was there. And once a disk was inserted, I experience no vibration what so ever.

*Since I am very cautious when it comes to purchases, I've included photos on this product as well

My iMAC recognized the drive as soon as I put a audio disk in.. just to test it. iTunes kicked immediately and there I was now with 2 drives that I can use on and off as much as I want! I already have plans in a few weeks to get another! Needless to say that I would recommend this to a buddy..

The only setback would be the packaging it came in. There was no manufacturer box and the only thing it came in was a bubble wrap. Is this thing refurbished???

(More customer reviews)Like most normal DVD-ROM's this drive does a nice job of playing DVDs at 16x, nothing special there, good seek times, and IBM's high standard for quality projects.However, one other thing this drive does well is read DVD-RAMs at 3x, an uncommon characteristic for many drives.I searched high and low for a DVD-RAM drive with a high read rate, and in some cases any drive that would read DVD-RAM.This was one of the few that I found that was above 1x, most are 1x or 2x and cost an arm and a leg, mainly due to the fact that they are recorders as well.
Now, most people don't care about reading DVD-RAM, but I found that it was extremely important if I wanted to transfer information off my Panasonic DVR-HS2, then transfer it to my computer for futher editing and burning to my multiplatform 4X drive.
The problem is the Panasonic DVR-HS2 will only record DVDs onto -R at 1x, and RAM at 3x. This means that if you have 20 hours of VHS to back up onto your DVR-HS2 harddrive, it will take you another 20 hours to burn it and a ton of DVD-R.But if you use the DVD-RAM option you can burn all of the info off in a third of the time, and you only need to use 1, that you can write over 1,000 of times.Once you get the info on the DVD-RAM then you can let the IBM drive read it into your computer, super fast, and transfer the information about anyway you would like.
The DVD-RAM option is probably not big to a lot of people, but for those who do possess a Panasonic DVR, or any other stand-alone DVR,it is a very wise option to have for your PC.

Well, it works fine with mine.

When I installed the CentOS/Linux operating system, the installation software didn't automatically recognize the drive, and I had to pick from a list of CentOS's drivers.That was no problem, however.

If you're going to use the unit to install a new operating system, or otherwise boot to the unit, you'll appreciate the outside power supply, since the USB ports on the Aspire One aren't powered until a few seconds into boot-up.By then the bios would have decided that no DVD was connected, and would be booting from the hard drive.

I found that out the hard way with a USB-powered unit made by LG, which is why I went for the Sony instead.That and several other problems with the LG.

Best for the Aspire One would be a USB-powered unit with an optional external power supply.

This is a first-rate drive, at a reasonable price.

(More customer reviews)this external dvd burner is by far the easiest to use, and the cheapest! but dont get me wrong on saying its cheap, because this a really good deal. I had no trouble at all installing it and using it. the title is a little misleading on saying it is for the asus EEE pc, but it can be used with anything that has 2 usb ports. the fact that it burns both dvd and dual layer dvds is amazing, considering other drives sell for $100+. in my opinion, the way the drive ejects (like a laptop drive) is a little annoying, but thats just me. when I got it, i was shocked on how small it actually is, about 5X5 inches and about an inch tall.

Runs on USB power and works fine with Ubuntu, good quality quick burner. The drive comes with two cables, one for USB and one for additional power. I have not had to use the second cable yet and in research have found that it is only needed if your USB ports are "underpowered."

Well worth the cost in my opinion.

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive to replace a very old white DVD ROM, the old one wasn't even a burner it was read only and was now in a black case.This is a very good drive, seems well built, the tray moves smoothly and feels solid.I can't comment on the lightscribe function because I haven't used it yet.It arrived well packed, the only thing included at the time I ordered this drive was driver software, including live firmware update and a copy of Nero 8 Essentials.I did not install Nero 8 but if you don't already have burning software this is a good program to receive free.I have used other versions of Nero and I have always been happy with them.No SATA cord or screws, this was not a problem for me.I deducted one star simply because there is no drive activity light on the drive.This may just be the way optical drives are made now but I miss the light.It can be just a little difficult to find the eject button when the entire drive is black and installed in a black case.I'm sure I'll get used to it and maybe I'm being a bit picky.All in all, this is a good, solid, fast drive that seems to handle every disc format except, of course, Blue Ray, and it's at a reasonable price.And don't let the "half height" disignation throw you off, it is a standard size drive that fits a standard 5 1/2 inch drive bay.I may buy another one to replace my last IDE drive which is one of the first DVD burners that came on the market, I still have some of the 1x DVD discs that I bought after purchasing that old burner, so you can imagine how fast the new Samsung seems to be to me.
