(More customer reviews)I picked this out for a replacement of a much older device that was similar to this one and I'm quite pleased with it!

It has all the software contained within the device so no need to have a driver disk installed into each computer, just plug it in and Win XP will take care of the setup for you. It's so simple it's ridiculous.

Pros:
Plug and play: plug it in and let it do it's thing!
Simple software that anyone with a 1/10 of a brain can figure out
has a nice long cable between the connections
comes with a carry pouch
comes with a velcro strap to keep the cable tidy

Cons:
The head of the main head on this unit of the device is kind of large so you may need to unplug other USB devices to fit this into the USB port. For some computers you may need to plug it into the back of the computer due to the size fact that some USB ports are set into the devices too far and this will be hard to get into there.

The price isn't bad but could always be better, I rather like this though and it will go in my laptop bag for when I need to get at large files or give large files when I'm out and about. No need to transfer to a disk, USB flash drive, or hook into the other persons network anymore. just plug into their USB port and be done with it.

(just a note on the speed of this device, limited by your system)
This device is limited not only by the processors involved but the hard drive speed capabilities. If your HDD is just a basic 7200 RPM drive it's likely that's it's not going to be able to read or write faster than 100-125MbPS. So you only get the benefit of high speed transfers if you are running a couple of these drives in RAID or running a high speed drive. So you should take those ideas into consideration when you are trying to run at high speeds.

I transfered 20gb of mp3 music [windows media] from laptop [vista] to son's desktop [windows 7] in about 5 minutes...NO joke! It worked so fast that I thought it did not work at first.It is basically plug 'n play.I set it up, dropped 'n dragged entire music file and walked away.My son was in his room watching TV and told me it was done and at first I thought he was nuts.Amazon comes thru again with best price, no tax, free ship and a great product.Definitely worth getting is you want to move large data, media or picture files.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this Asus Eee PC as an experiment, replacing my bulky Media Center PC (aka Home Theater PC or HTPC), and I have been extremely satisfied so far.The unit is small (1/10th the footprint of my HTPC), quiet, very responsive, and makes an attractive (if only diminutive) addition to my entertainment center.

I use the unit for web browsing with a wireless keyboard and mouse/remote (with accelerometer), watching online video, Amazon UnBox videos, music playback (multiple formats), video playback (multiple formats), and playing DVDs. So far I have no complaints, from me (the household geek) or my family (internet junkies one-and-all).

Pros: Affordable, small, quick boot, attractive design, high quality graphics, low power consumption, very quiet (nearly silent), and it can be mounted to the back of a display (using the VESA mount).

Cons: None noted

Summary: This very well design unit is not suited for all applications, but when you need a small PC, with diminished demands, this is an excellent solution at a very affordable price.I added a USB DVD/CD RW to my tools, using only when needed, and it works flawlessly.

(a) an unrepentant miser "How often would we save 30 hours of re-typing?Not often enough to compensate for a $50 investment in OCR software!Never mind what the error rate is!",
(b) technophobic "I only have 10 years until I retire and I'm not going to learn computers!"
and
(c) suffering from narcissistic personality disorder "How dare you suggest to me that business is about profit and not about cost!"

And the other lawyer is basically a saint.Opposites attract I guess.

For me, working for free, this kind of "Denial, ain't just a river in Egypt!" environment is pretty demanding.Anything you touch, you own.Anything you touch, you broke.Anything you change can and will be used against you in a court of miser-technophobe-narcissist-boy criticism.You know the drill.

The task should you choose to accept it is to pull 10 year old, a hopelessly virus infected ("Virus infected?How can it be virus infected? We didn't have it connected to the internet, we just used floppy disks and USB thmb drives to move files back AND FORTH!" to our other Windows XP machine with 2-year-expired anti-virus!") Windows XP machine, to re-insert a replacement.With miser-technophobe-narcissist-boy throwing gorilla dust in the air and the full pomposity of his gravitas around, the entire office runs with brains downshifted to the Limbic system (i.e., the part of the brain that re-plays reptilian behaviors during layoffs).

So, what I need from this computer is very important:
- It must be a true Windows XP box
- It must downgrade cleanly from Windows 7 Professional
- It must not look or behave in any funky alien ways to the Windows XP milieu.

I'm DELIGHTED to report that this Veriton X275 machine meets all my requirements!It has the same 5 pin DIN ports on the back for mouse and keyboard that the old XP machine had.It has plain vanilla VGA video out.It has gobs (7) USB ports.It even has a 9 pin Serial port!!! W00T!

What you need to know:
- The instructions on Acer's web site for downgrading are non-existent.I found a way to make the downgrade happen, but it isn't smooth.
- The trick is to set up an account on Windows 7 Professional, then run the install disk backup for XP, then change the boot drive to the CD, then boot off the windows restore DVDs (2 for XP) and restore Windows.No, this isn't in the manual or on Acer's web site.
- You are on your own.If your reinstall DVDs are toast, you will be hung out to dry and when you are, there is nobody to call and no help that I could find on the internet for getting you out of the fix.But, fortunately, I did not have this problem.

Machine is quick, quick, quick, running XP.The reboots to try and figure out how to get the downgrade to work (*Hint* neither of the + keys (on keypad and on top row) work in getting into restore mode in the firmware.Or, maybe I found the restore mode and only Windows 7 was available.YOYO: You are On Your Own.You have been warned!

No support, but this computer box rocks!I would have given it a perfect score if Acer had: (a) made downgrading to XP smooth, or (b) if Acer had valid instructions on how to downgrade to XP on their site.So, no love, no perfect score Acer!

ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)The Asus external DVD burner just arrived today. It was very nice looking and lightweight. Goes well with my black Asus EEE PC 900HA. Simple plug and play installation. However, I did not install the Cyberlink Power2go 6 software that was included in the package. The Y cable is about 20-21 inches long which is good enough for me since it is neither too short or too long. Underneath the dvd burner, there is rubbery panel that is removable and it is where you hook up the stand.

Anyway, I wanted to test how fast the drive can burn. So I plugged it into my old Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop and I used Nero 7 Ultra Edition software to burn 4.16 gigs of stuff in under 21 minutes (with verify disc option turned on). It is really fast and consistent (speed top out at 7.8X on a number of occasions). My Phillips burner in my Dell never came close to that speed (at most 6X). The noise isn't that noticeable either (or made just as much noise as the Phillips burner).

Overall, I'm quite pleased and surprised by the performance and looks of the Asus external DVD burner.

Additional notes: I used 2 USB ports (one on the laptop and one on Antec notebook cooler which was also connected to laptop) during the burning process and it didn't seem to have affected the performance.

Also, I ran some discs using only 1 USB port and they played fine.

Like the EEE PC, the drive can be a dust and finger-print magnet.

Logitech Webcam C500 with 1.3MP Video and Built-in Microphone Review

(More customer reviews)The quest for a good replacement webcam can come to an end with the mid level Logitech C500. The thing that appealed to me primarily were the simple features. With a two tone silver finish, the glass lens C500 is packed with an attached 6' USB cable, software CD, instructions and a two year product warranty.

The expandable clip easily attaches to my LCD monitor or it can free stand on the desk. I found that the webcam installs perfectly with or without the enclosed Logitech software. Just plug and play. It paired well with both Meebo and Google's Gmail "G Chat" without stalling or interruptions.

I was very impressed by the clarity and sharpness of image transmission. The microphone picks up even the faintest of whispers. The jury is out on the product's RightLight technology. I did not see that much difference in lighting over my older Logitech webcam. The manually operated privacy shutter is a nice add on.

The much hyped Logitech video calling network software package with its special effects and avatars is probably an okay add on for some but not for us. Personally I find it too intrusive. As I have mentioned earlier, its not required to get the webcam up and running. Other chat networks work fine without it.

Overall for the price and features, I find the Logitech C500 Webcam to be a step up over other internet communication tools in the same category. The C500 delivers on the basics and more.

And though the specs don't mention it, mine came with a lightscribe capable drive, when I thought I was getting only a DVD-RW.It has a floppy drive, too, which the specs don't mention.The keyboard and mouse were genuine Dell. The keyboard even has media player controls.Can't say anything about the speakers, as my monitor has integrated speakers and I haven't connected the included ones.They are basic powered generic speakers.

The only thing I could possibly have wanted that it doesn't have is a modem, but I knew that before I ordered it.

The shipping was fast, the packing excellent, and there were only a few small scuffs on the case, but since it is sitting on the floor under the desk, that is totally insignificant.What matters is how this system works, which is amazingly.

I would recommend a system from this vendor to anyone!

(More customer reviews)I bought this computer as an early Christmas gift for my daughter.Aside from a few cosmetic flaws the computer worked fine for about 2 months.It now overheats, the fan constantly runs and it totally shuts down every 20 minutes.I first wrote a decent review on this product but I spoke too soon.I contacted the seller about the problems and their reply was that nothing could be done since it was outside the 30 day warranty.Ok, my bad.30 days?This item is a piece of junk.You would do better to go to the big box store and get something much nicer and reliable for the same price!! I currently own a computer purchased at a big box store for approximately the same price and IT STILL WORKS AFTER 6 YEARS!!!So the way I figure it is that I rented this computer for about $100 a month.It's just an expensive paperweight now.Trust me, don't fall for the favorable reviews or the "helpful" customer service.This merchant is a rip off and sells defective products.I realize that I took a chance buying something refurbished with a 30 day warranty, but the computer was still a little pricey.Stay far away from this merchant and their products.I learned the hard way.They got their money.My daughter has a useless machine.Don't make the same mistake I did.Save yourself money and aggravation and get something reliable.Look elsewhere.
