(More customer reviews)Tested and found hardware well supported under Windows XP, 7, Server 2008r2 as well as Ubuntu Linux and OpenSolaris, but ultimately settled on VMWare ESXi ($30 PCIe x1 Intel NIC required (EXPI9301CT)).
The Intel 3250 chipset + Core i5-650 brings some server class features home, but two in particular jumped out: ECC Memory and Intel VT-d (Directed I/O) IOMMU support.ECC at this price is nice, while VT-d allows some crazy hijinks under VMWare ESXi (VMDirectPath) so you can pass PCIe devices to directly to virtual machines.Nexenta gets the PCIe SAS controller for ZFS, while Windows 7 gets my PCI TV Tuner card and Ubuntu for web serving duties. Finally allowing me to virtualize my home server.
If you'd like to skip the windows tax and play with some alternate operating systems, this is definitely a reasonably priced way to get there.I do wish it had a handle like its ThinkStation E20 brother and that 4GB PC3-1333 ECC UDIMMs were cheaper, but you can't have everything.
