Iomega Portable Hard Drive USB 2.0, 160GB (33600) Review

Iomega Portable Hard Drive USB 2.0, 160GB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a digital designer by trade, and I've owned seven different portable and external hard drives over the last eight years. I've purchased three Iomega drives, including this model, which I've had to reformat several times due to the drive failing. Of course, reformatting erases all the data on the drive, so my frustration with this product has been lengthy. All three of the Iomega drives I've owned have died within 12 months of purchase. Just about ten minutes ago my third and final Iomega drive, this one, started making a familiar clicking sound. I know that it is also about to die, so I hopped online to locate a replacement as fast as possible. I currently own two Maxtor drives and one Seagate. The Maxtor drives were purchased long before I purchased two of the three Iomega drives that I've owned, and the Maxtors are much more heavily used than the Iomega drives. Yet, all three of the Iomega drives are now dead, but the Maxtors are still going strong. I can no longer recommend any Iomega hard drive. After years of giving them another chance I have now sworn off of Iomega drives forever. I plan to buy a Western Digital drive. The reviews are good and the 120 GB drive (at the time of this writing) is only $89. Save yourself some frustration and don't purchase this product.

LaCie F.A. Porsche 320 GB External Hard Drive Review

LaCie F.A. Porsche 320 GB External Hard Drive
Average Reviews:

It's no use to predict how a hard drive will perform down the road past three months of course, and by the time you read the 'down the road' reviews, it'll likely be undersized for your needs.

Regardless, this is a nice plug and play (no drivers needed, literally plug in and go on XP) drive with more than enough room to back up most peoples complete machines with 300gb+ of usable space.I reformatted it to NTFS w/o problem. It's a Hitachi drive; they've been very reliable in my experience.I'm using it to back up both my home server and laptop with room to spare. It's USB 2.0 only, so would be slow for everyday access use. It's the perfect backup drive though for now.

An update (7/7/07): This drive is still working flawlessly nine months in, and I'm still as happy with it as when I wrote the above review.

Iomega Limited Edition 250 GB Hi-speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Review

Iomega Limited Edition 250 GB Hi-speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive
Average Reviews:

This product is so fragile. The user forums on Iomega's website are filled with people whose Iomega hard drives are broken from the tiniest actions. If you move the hard drive while it is on, it will erase all your memory! If you unplug the hard drive while it is on, even just once by accident, it will be erased! I happened to drop the power cord from a distance of three feet, and now it wont turn back on. The product will only work with the exact same cord which costs $20 + shipping from Iomega.

Also, I want to warn you about their HORRIBLE customer service! You have two options. Only if your product is under warranty, they will let you use the chat room to talk to a technician. I have waited over 6 hours total, and no one has answered! The other option is to call for support. This costs $25 dollars, even though I just want to ask asimple question, and my product is still under warranty!

Overall, this product seemed like it was great, but according to other people on the forums, and my own experience, it is just too fragile. On top of that, the customer service is so rude, and uncaring, that I will never buy from Iomega again!

Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 160GB, Cherry Red - 33832 Review

Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 160GB, Cherry Red - 33832

This is my third Iomega. First was a "Silver Portable" 40GB drive. Ran perfectly for over a year and I gave it to my son so he could finally back up his WinXP system. Then I bought a 120GB USB/Firewire "Silver Portable" and it ran perfectly for over a year and was just retired to my backup computer so I could buy a larger one, my first Iomega that's not a "Silver Portable".

If you've read complaints throughout Amazon about the Western Digital and Maxtor and others regarding some very important flaws like running noisy, breaking in a few months, and not getting enough power from the USB port, then do consider this one. This drive runs very quietly and only draws around 100mA from a standard 500mA USB port.

You've probably read that it's important with Windows XP to format your USB hard drive using the NTFS file system and then set it in device manager's "Policies" tab to "optimize for performance". That's quite true and worth mentioning. You'll get best speed this way and really don't lose anything except compatibility with Windows 95, 98 and ME. What are they, you ask? ;>) Also, the drive comes with an 8MB cache which helps give it such fine performance.

Comparing this drive to my other Iomega Silver Portables, it's supposed to be more shock resistant but I don't plan to ever test that. On the negative side it is larger and cannot be placed in a shirt pocket like the others. It's just a bit longer, wider and heavier - no problem at all though for a brief case, a laptop's accessory compartment, or even a small woman's purse. It runs a bit warmer also. Not hot at all but I'm just spoiled by the other Iomegas which run cooler. It does not have rubber feet but is not especially slippery either. I'm more comfortable with things like this by placing them atop a piece of Rubbermaid non-skid rubberized shelfing material, cut to fit, but that may be overkill.

From the other reviews I've read including Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, LaCie and some others, there didn't seem to be another manufacturer that I would have faith in. Not to demean this drive at all, but if I were to buyit again or buy another for myself, I would definitely consider another "Silver Portable" for its compactness, lower temperature, and ridiculously low power draw from the USB port. At this writing, they are still available on Amazon but will be selling out in the near future. They are:

1. Model 33634 - USB/Firewire 120GB for $100 (I have this one already)
2. Model 33600 - USB 160GB for $80.

Finally, software. The drive comes with a license for some Iomega licensed backup software. Backup software is very difficult to trust, and usually you don't learn how competent it is until your hard drive fails or some virus eats you alive. Crunch time is a bit late to be disappointed by your backup software. I very strongly encourage you to take a hard look at Acronis True Image software. I have it as do some friends and it doesn't disappoint. Even works on a PC with RAID1 hard drives, if that means anything to you. Probably the only program for PCs that does. It even comes with a bootable CD version which runs slower doing the backup than the installed version, but can be very convenient.

I've run dry and this review has run long. Thanks for reading. Hope I've been helpful

Regards ... Sam

This is the second HP media drive I've owned. The first one was the 160GB drive. It is a USB-connected hard drive that fits in a slot in Hewlett Packard's Media center PCs.The only problem with it is overheating. It has a built in fan but the exhaust slots are very small and quickly clog up with lint.It can be cleaned with a toothpick, but the easiest solution is to not leave it plugged in (and running) all the time.I mostly leave it unplugged and only actually run it when I am backing up my HDD (or recovering files).

The software, Windows only, works pretty simply. If you are after a decent, small, slick backup drive with specific software this may do you well.

However, if you want to use the Simplesave as a plain external hard disk you're in for a rude surprise. The backup software is installed on a "Virtual CD-ROM" partition that is installed on the drive in some very low level manner so that you can't get rid of the 500M of wasted "virtual CD-ROM" partition. Why didn't HP just put the software in the root drive of the data partition? Unfortunately, it's anothertypical "cram the software down your throat" HP product.

Simplicity in true form.

The drive arrived and was unpacked from its box.I connected the drive to its cable and then plugged the cable into the USB port on my laptop and, Poof!, I had a new 1TB drive of storage space. That's it.That's all I had to do.

The drive comes with pre-installed backup software -- full then incremental -- which you DO NOT have to download and install onto your computer, it's all self contained. If all you want is to drag and drop files then you can do that, too.

I was able to back up about 7.5 GB of data in half an hour which isn't bad for an external USB drive using USB 2.0 since I don't have USB 3.0 available at this time.

The unit itself measures 4.5" X 3" X 0.75" and comes with a 17" cable.Power for the drive comes from the USB port.My machine is a Toshiba Satellite A105 using Windows 7 Pro.

The drive is simple, compact, and does exactly what it's supposed to do without any complaints.

It.Just.Works!

HP Personal Media Drive 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive HD5000S Review

HP Personal Media Drive 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive HD5000S
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Uncharacteristic of the Squonk, this review will actually be pretty short. If you've read some of my other reviews, you'll know what I mean.In any event, the 500 GB HP Personal Media Drive is a fantastic product. This is largely because the concept is so ingenious, yet so simple.Traditionally, external hard drives have been somewhat cumbersome things--they require their own power source, for one. Also, no matter how small they are made, they still rob desk space. The solution?HP decided to develop a drive that combines the best features of internal drives--no need for a separate power source, no space wasted on the desk--with the data security and portability of external drives.

The 500 GB capacity comes out to 465 GB formatted/corrected for actual capacity (i.e. a gigabyte actually contains 1024 megabytes, and a megabyte actually contains 1024 kilobytes; however, in their capacity ratings drive manufacturers round off the extra 24 units in each case, the result being that the actual capacity of each drive is less than advertised). This is simply gigantic.I imagine one could archive every book ever written on this drive and still have room for the first five seasons of Family Guy.This capacity is ideal for archiving digital media, important files, and just about anything else you can think of.

Installation is a snap.If you have an HP Pavilion Media Center PC with a Personal Media Drive Bay, then it's simply a matter of sliding the drive into the bay.NOTE: The Personal Media Drive (PMD) is NOT the same as the Pocket Media Drive, also made by HP--the latter is for the standard Pavilion line.In any event, if you do not have the PMD bay, then the supplied USB cable and power adapter are no problem to use.Either way, there are no drivers to install. The PMD itself contains some installation files for added functionality, along with a bunch of folders containing several programs in each of about twenty different languages. These take up almost 700 MB of space, and when I realized what they were, I quickly moved them to my HP m7640n's native hard drive--I might need them for some strange reason.Note, however, that the one folder with a name longer than three letters is required to install the drive's extra software.Leave this folder and (re)move all the others.

Data transfers are fast enough.USB 2.0 has a maximum transfer speed of 480 MB/sec, so that's what the PMD will do.I haven't noticed any instances where that speed is in any way lacking.

Other that this, there isn't much more to say.The device is somewhat larger than I might have expected, though this is reassuring--it looks and feels solid, and it sports a case of tough plastic and brushed aluminum. The status LEDs are matched to the current Pavilion line (i.e. a blue static light and an amber access indicator), and the device fits flush inside its bay.It looks like a dream in there, and though the little plastic door on the m7640n's front panel can close over the PMD, I usually leave it open so I can see the extra lights.

All in all, I would recommend the 500 GB HP Personal Media Drive to those who own an HP Pavilion Media Center PC.For all others, it's just another external hard drive, and there exist other such external HDDs that are much cheaper per GB than the HP PMD.You pay a premium to enjoy the dual functionality offered by HP's product, and for that extra benefit I am happy.

Toshiba 160 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive HDDR160E03X Review

Toshiba 160 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive HDDR160E03X
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like all USB-powered hard drives, this one comes with a caveat that some old computers do not provide enough power; Toshiba offers a special cable that draws power from 2 USB ports, and their web site even has a special form to ask for this cable. My old computer (also a Toshiba) requires this cable, so I filled out the form but got no response. Two weeks later I tried calling but couldn't get through, so I filled the form again, asking explicitly when I would get the cable. This time they responded promptly as follows:

Hello,

Unfortunately, We do not have this cable available on stock and we do not
have a date when the cable will arrive.

Toshiba Technical Support.

The cable was not available on Amazon either, but I found one from an ebay store for $5.02 including shipping, and received it within a few days. With the new cable, the hard drive works great; it also works with thesupplied cable when connected to a computer that supplies enough power. But if you have an old computer, don't count on Toshiba for providing the necessary cable.

The specifications require USB 2.0 and Windows or Mac OS, but the drive works well with USB 1.1 and Linux (just for storage, not the backup software).

I have owned my TS-439 ProII for a couple months now and have been very happy with it.The build quality is high, the unit is quiet, it has been reliable, and has met or exceeded most of my expectations.I have witnessed a few quirks with the software which is to be expected on a device this feature rich and new (No show stoppers). The good thing is that QNAP does very regular firmware updates, constantly improving the features and fixing known bugs.QNAPs forums are also a great resource to learn about the NAS and get assistance from fellow users when needed.Over the course of my ownership there was one human error induced issue I had and QNAP's support was quick to respond and get my NAS squared away.It will take more time and use for a full review, but after two months I am still very happy with my purchase and would purchase another without a second thought if the need arose.

My son and I have 10 of these SimpleDrives. They have worked flawlessly for over a year in a number of different ways. Primarily we use them to backup of files, extend the file capacity of our laptops.I formatted one fat32 and have put ghost images of my laptop on it for recovery.I did recover from a ghost image once and it worked.I also formatted one fat32 and put 200GB of photos in folders on it. I then connected it to my Kodak Eashshare Digital picture frame. All these uses have worked great. I just order more SimpleDrives as we need more space.

I received this hard drive about a week ago for Mac OS 10.5.2 Time Machine. The drive looks and works great.I own a Mac Pro so as you can see in the Amazon ad, this thing is like a "mini me" of the Mac Pro which I think is the coolest part of it.I have had no problems (yet) with this HD and I honestly do not see it happening.

Iomega has been around for so many years and I trust their products. There is indeed ONLY one drawback to this drive. When the drive is reading and writing, it could get a little loud.I don't think this would justify one less star because the hard drive itself works perfectly so far.The firewire 400 speed is just fine for Time Machine once per hour.

Apple's website has this drive for sale also and this drive has some great reviews there if you want to check out what some other people say about it.Bottom line, this drive rocks and I would recommend it to any Mac or even PC user out there. The look is just so nice.

The frustration-free packing was very nice and simple to open. Its nice not to fight with a package! I was a little concerned that the drive was not in a static case, with-in the frustration-free casing however all did turn out fine.

First off, you will need a SATA data cable to use this product. Some power supply's have it, others don't so keep that in mind in case you need a cable when you purchase this. All of our computers recognized the device fast. We have an HP, two Dells, a lenovo laptop and a personally made computer which I used to really test the drive's speed and capacity out. The drive is very quiet, no noise or clicking coming from it. Besides installing easily, your able able to create a partition through the disk manager interface and do a quick format as well. Our systems mainly have windows 7, however some have vista and there were no issues.

I plan to use this as an external hard drive once I purchase a eSATA USB Docking Station. (they run about $30) It will make it easy to move from computer to computer and backup what I need. With the massive 2TB drive capacity, you won't run out of room! It has 7200RPM, 64 MB cache, and 6gb/s interface; which in turn makes for a great performance of power and quality.

I have two other WD (500GB) drives for my Imac that I use for external storage, but I kept having problems running my Time Machine backups.(not enough space on External to backup). I ordered my 2TB WD from Amazon and hoped for the best. Well I received it and opened the box and plugged it in. I went to my System Preferences and clicked on Time Machine chose my new HD and set it for my backup. That was it, of course it is going to take a bit of time for the initial backup, but that was it. No problems and it runs like a champ. I have already reccomended it to my niece for her mac.

I was hunting for a backup that would be easy to use.I tried several that just didn't work for me.This product has no software and was so easy to use.Just plug it in and it did all the work. You can also easily see what you have on the drive. It actually shows you the pictures that are stored. You can also switch between computers with ease.I would definitely recommend this product.
