Iomega Limited Edition 250 GB Hi-speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Review

Iomega Limited Edition 250 GB Hi-speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive
Average Reviews:

This product is so fragile. The user forums on Iomega's website are filled with people whose Iomega hard drives are broken from the tiniest actions. If you move the hard drive while it is on, it will erase all your memory! If you unplug the hard drive while it is on, even just once by accident, it will be erased! I happened to drop the power cord from a distance of three feet, and now it wont turn back on. The product will only work with the exact same cord which costs $20 + shipping from Iomega.

Also, I want to warn you about their HORRIBLE customer service! You have two options. Only if your product is under warranty, they will let you use the chat room to talk to a technician. I have waited over 6 hours total, and no one has answered! The other option is to call for support. This costs $25 dollars, even though I just want to ask asimple question, and my product is still under warranty!

Overall, this product seemed like it was great, but according to other people on the forums, and my own experience, it is just too fragile. On top of that, the customer service is so rude, and uncaring, that I will never buy from Iomega again!

Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 160GB, Cherry Red - 33832 Review

Iomega eGo Rugged Portable Hard Drive, USB 2.0, 160GB, Cherry Red - 33832
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third Iomega. First was a "Silver Portable" 40GB drive. Ran perfectly for over a year and I gave it to my son so he could finally back up his WinXP system. Then I bought a 120GB USB/Firewire "Silver Portable" and it ran perfectly for over a year and was just retired to my backup computer so I could buy a larger one, my first Iomega that's not a "Silver Portable".

If you've read complaints throughout Amazon about the Western Digital and Maxtor and others regarding some very important flaws like running noisy, breaking in a few months, and not getting enough power from the USB port, then do consider this one. This drive runs very quietly and only draws around 100mA from a standard 500mA USB port.

You've probably read that it's important with Windows XP to format your USB hard drive using the NTFS file system and then set it in device manager's "Policies" tab to "optimize for performance". That's quite true and worth mentioning. You'll get best speed this way and really don't lose anything except compatibility with Windows 95, 98 and ME. What are they, you ask? ;>) Also, the drive comes with an 8MB cache which helps give it such fine performance.

Comparing this drive to my other Iomega Silver Portables, it's supposed to be more shock resistant but I don't plan to ever test that. On the negative side it is larger and cannot be placed in a shirt pocket like the others. It's just a bit longer, wider and heavier - no problem at all though for a brief case, a laptop's accessory compartment, or even a small woman's purse. It runs a bit warmer also. Not hot at all but I'm just spoiled by the other Iomegas which run cooler. It does not have rubber feet but is not especially slippery either. I'm more comfortable with things like this by placing them atop a piece of Rubbermaid non-skid rubberized shelfing material, cut to fit, but that may be overkill.

From the other reviews I've read including Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, LaCie and some others, there didn't seem to be another manufacturer that I would have faith in. Not to demean this drive at all, but if I were to buyit again or buy another for myself, I would definitely consider another "Silver Portable" for its compactness, lower temperature, and ridiculously low power draw from the USB port. At this writing, they are still available on Amazon but will be selling out in the near future. They are:

1. Model 33634 - USB/Firewire 120GB for $100 (I have this one already)
2. Model 33600 - USB 160GB for $80.

Finally, software. The drive comes with a license for some Iomega licensed backup software. Backup software is very difficult to trust, and usually you don't learn how competent it is until your hard drive fails or some virus eats you alive. Crunch time is a bit late to be disappointed by your backup software. I very strongly encourage you to take a hard look at Acronis True Image software. I have it as do some friends and it doesn't disappoint. Even works on a PC with RAID1 hard drives, if that means anything to you. Probably the only program for PCs that does. It even comes with a bootable CD version which runs slower doing the backup than the installed version, but can be very convenient.

I've run dry and this review has run long. Thanks for reading. Hope I've been helpful

Regards ... Sam

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA500105 (Black) Review

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA500105
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable Hard Drive is great for on-the-go file transfers and backing up your PC.I have a 500 GB Western Digital Passport drive and the size of both drives is almost exactly the same.I've yet to test on a USB 3.0 (unfortunately, my Mac does not have that) but the transfer speed is very quick with USB 2.0.My only minor quibble is that the included USB cable has a proprietary cable.It's probably only about 18" long, so keep that in mind when deciding if this is the right hard drive for you... or add the cost of a longer proprietary cable into the price, if needed.

Registration was fast and simple.If you own a Mac you have two choices on how to use the drive.The first is "Mac and PC" mode - which allows you to exchange files between Mac and PC without reformatting the drive."Requires installation of included Paragon NTFS For Mac driver to enable two-way Mac OS and Windows use.Some applications, including Time Machine and the included Mac backup software from Seagate will not work since they cannot make us of a drive that uses the Windows (NTFS) system.""Mac Only" mode will "erase the drive to prepare it for us with all Mac applications, including Time Machine and the included Mac backup software from Seagate.Your included Seagate software bundle will be restored to the drive."

I went with the Mac only option so I could utilize the Time Machine feature of the Mac.It pops up a prompt to ask you if you want to set the FreeAgent GoFlex Drive as your Time Machine backup drive. My laptop computer has a 500GB hard drive with about 60 GB of free space. I was shocked when the following message popped up:"This backup is too large for the backup disk.The backup requires 518.79 GB but only 499.29 GB are available.Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required for storage backups."

I went back and ran the Seagate installer again, it made me register a 2nd time, and then I picked the option where I can use the drive between mac & PC.I will have to use a larger (750 GB or 1 TB) drive with Time Machine.But this hard drive is great for the use of sharing files with family & friends, especially with its fast transfer speeds.

Centon DataStick Pro 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DSP8GB-008
Average Reviews:

I bought this 8GB Centon Datastick PRO today and liked it.

The GOODS

- nice grey aluminum casing means it is durable
- LED flashes when copying or transferring files from device
- 2.0 fast standard speed
- lanyard groove on the flash drive & not on the cap!
- silver imprint text design gives a nice look to it

The BADS

- the plastic protruding inside the cap will wear out overtime, inevitably causing the cap to become less secure, making it prone for dust to enter the USB's teeth.And of course, your more likely to lose the cap eventually.

()()()()()(Update: I used this for about 1 week and today I'm experiencing an error.The computer is asking me to reformat this USB flash drive.The same message pops up when I plug the flash drive an another computer.I will return this product.

I bought mine for $19.95 at Fry's Electronic at a regular price so don't pay anything more than that!

Simplicity in true form.

The drive arrived and was unpacked from its box.I connected the drive to its cable and then plugged the cable into the USB port on my laptop and, Poof!, I had a new 1TB drive of storage space.That's it.That's all I had to do.

The drive comes with pre-installed backup software -- full then incremental -- which you DO NOT have to download and install onto your computer, it's all self contained.If all you want is to drag and drop files then you can do that, too.

I was able to back up about 7.5 GB of data in half an hour which isn't bad for an external USB drive using USB 2.0 since I don't have USB 3.0 available at this time.

The unit itself measures 4.5" X 3" X 0.75" and comes with a 17" cable.Power for the drive comes from the USB port.My machine is a Toshiba Satellite A105 using Windows 7 Pro.

The drive is simple, compact, and does exactly what it's supposed to do without any complaints.

It.Just.Works!

Patriot Xporter XT Boost 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF4GUSB Review

Patriot Xporter XT Boost 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PEF4GUSB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the 32 GB Patriot thumb drive and have been very happy with it. I work in video animation and web design and have found the drive to be very fast - even with large size file loads or loads with a large number of files. I've read some other complaints about the load speed of the drive but haven't noticed them myself. Perhaps the people complaining about the load speed weren't using a USB 2.0 port or they were simply being overly scientific about it.

Upon opening the drive from its packaging I inserted it into my USB drive right away and both my Vista machine and my Windows XP machine recognized it immediately. There was no formatting or configuration required. I'm not sure how it would react to a Mac.

My biggest concern with a drive like this is losing the cap. For example, if you put the drive on your keychain and stick it in your pocket the cap will eventually come off of the drive in your pocket, or while you take your keychain out of your pocket, or while the drive hangs from your vehicle's ignition. It's also common, at least for me, to forget where I put the caps. In consideration of a potential future lost cap I emailed the manufacturer's customer service department and asked them for extra caps and I received 2 additional caps about two weeks later free of charge. To me, that's customer service.

Overall the drive seems reasonably rugged. It's encased in rubber so I suspect that's what the manufacturer was going for. I'll modify this post if the drive ever craps out on me but for now I'm very satisfied with it - especially when compared to other thumb drives I've owned.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: DRIVER HAS FAILED, READ THE END OF THE REVIEW BEFORE BUYING!!!!!!!!!! (Amazon doesn't allow me to change from five to zero stars)

I purchased this external HD mainly for backups of my HP laptop and my wife's Mackbook. The main reason for choosing this model was that it is one of the few units that can startup without a 2-1 USB cable for extra energy. Macbooks strictly follows the 500mA current limit standard for USB ports so a lot of external drives that are powered directly from the USB cannot spin up without using two USB ports. This model works flawless with only one standard USB port.

Pros:
- No external power adapter (powered by the USB port);
- Small form factor;
- Light weight (light like an iPod);
- Beautiful design;

Cons:
- None so far, worked fine since I bought it one month ago;

Update: And then, after six more months... I can't turn it on again, just the blue led lighten and a clicking noise, no spin up, not recognized by the Windows, nothing. At least mine lasted longer, as other people reports it failing in 2 or 3 months. Toshiba? Never more, I will go back to Seagate.

So I read the reviews here, took the plunge and would say the *only* reason you should be buying this over another vendor's external HD is the E-SATA interface.E-SATA is mighty fast and blows away USB.As others have mentioned, you need to reformat this to NTFS to save big files and I wiped the virtual partition.The backup software is junk - go download a freeware copy of GFI Backup which is way better.It works fine, but for the average plug and play person who is not tech savy this is probably too much work.

HP v100w 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD8GBHP100-EF Review

HP v100w 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD8GBHP100-EF
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are great.Simple, quick, cheap, reliable, fast, and to the point.I had a couple 2GB HP flash drives that I just replaced with 8GB HP flash drives now that the cost has come down quite a bit.I like them because they are streamlined to be easily carried around on your keychain.If you always have your keychain in your pocket, like most people, then you will always have storage space on hand.I have two on my keychain.One is for PortableApps (google: PortableApps), which is a very cool way of being able to run your own applications (Firefox, OpenOffice, Media Players, IM's, etc) on other people's computers without having to install anything on their computer.It is completely "take everything with you".The other one is to boot into a live Linux that runs off the USB drive without touching a HDD.Especially useful when you need to use various utilities to fix someone's computer: such as HDD partitioners, boot loader managers, ability to mount an NTFS drive and replace a corrupted file that is preventing their Windows from loading, text editing, etc, etc.

Like others have mentioned, the cap does not fit on the drive very tight so it will only be a matter of time before it gets lost. Others have commented about using string (glue or drill a hole) to keep the cap from getting lost.I didn't even bother.I just took the caps off and threw them into a drawer somewhere.I just carry the drives on my keychain without the caps.They won't get damaged.

These USB flash drives also have a built-in LED that illuminates during data transfer, so you can be sure that there is no data being transferred before disconnecting them.This will prevent possible file corruption.

It would be nice if HP made these drives in different colors other than black, so you could color code them for your various uses.

These, obviously, aren't secure (encrypted) USB flash drives, so if you are looking for something that you plan on using with sensitive information (and the possibility of it getting into the wrong hands), look elsewhere.
