(More customer reviews)Just bought this HD to back up my MacBook Pro. Hooks up in seconds, Mac recognizes it immediately and you can just drag and drop files to store or backup. I use Time Machine with this to back up my whole system and it works flawlessly.I used to have Apple's Time Capsule but after a while I didn't like the slow wireless connection to back up files and it would constantly stop backups because the connections would occasionally drop. I use the Firewire 800 connection with this HD and it backed up my whole system in less than an hour. Great size also if you want to take it anywhere with you. Included cables cover all scenarios such as Firewire 800, Firewire 400 & USB. Also has a very convenient leather carrying case so the HD doesn't get all dinged or scratched up during transport. Only negative thing I could say about this product is that the docking station only works with Firewire 800 so it will be useless to use if you don't have that connection on your current system. Other than that, Seagate makes an awesome product & I would recommend this to any & everyone looking for backup options or solutions.

(More customer reviews)This drive uses reduced power at least partly by varying its rotational speed as needed. It is part of WD's new green power line. I purchased it to replace a failing Maxtor drive that came with the PC.

The WD drive is incredibly quiet. It is also considerably faster than the original drive in the machine. A very noticeable speed boost.

Installation is conventional. Straightforward although I would only recommend doing ANY hard disk upgrade for people with some experience working inside PCs. WD's Data Lifeguard software helps with formatting, partitioning, and copying files from your old drive (assuming it still works).

Obviously, if you want to copy from your old drive you must temporarily install it in your PC after installing the new one. WD's software will copy entire partitions quickly and easily. I used this to copy the system and other partitions to the new drive. It worked reasonably well. Win XP booted correctly. Primary problem was that this got Microsoft Office 2003 a bit confused. Somehow the office update settings got out of sort. Office worked without doing this although Office Update did not. Actually had to clean those registry settings and then uninstall and reinstall Office.

WD's user guide is good although a bit poorly worded in places - the guide for using the software to help set up the drive. E.g. The user guide talks about creating a bootable floppy diskette. I did although it was never needed. It may only be needed if setting up the drive from DOS and your PC cannot boot from CD.

Overall, I strongly recommend this drive. Over the years I have found WD drives to be quiet, fast, and reliable. This continues the record. Remember to erase your old drive!

I was previously using a Seagate External USB drive, and although it worked fine, it was relatively slow once my data grew so large. I am not a big fan of incremental backups, so I like doing a full back every week and keeping a few weeks worth before overwriting them. When I bought a new computer that supported eSATA, I knew it was time to get a new external drive I can use for backups. The Iomega eSATA 33849 really impressed me with it's speed and reliability. I even purchased a second one so I could keep one offsite for even more protection. If your computer supports eSATA, this device should be a no brainer if you are currently using a USB drive because the speed will simply astound you. If you are considering buying a backup device and want a bit of "future proofing", then this drive makes a great addition since it supports USB for you now, and then you can use the eSATA when you eventually replace your computer. Either way, the Iomega 33849 will not disappoint.

The prices are very compatible for both drives and are all carried 3 years warranty.However I'd rather choose Maxtor in the future. The Maxtor drives have very good utility and are very user friendly, they are easy to install and come with software to help get them partitioned and formatted even you are a first time user. Ultra ATA/133 interface with 8MB Cache makes the drive 20% faster than the regular one (2MB Cache size).Have used Maxtor in many years and never had a failure. Great Drive!

(More customer reviews)I recently have built a AMD quad core win 7 machine this hd was not quite what i expected what it was going to be as it lasted only a month before it started to loose its integrity I rma it to the seller and they replaced it with a newer model so as far as the seller I gave it a 4 as far as the drive it was defective from the beginning and I expect to much maybe but the quality of the hd they make now are very poor as its just like everything else no quality control and the drive has a great warranty but definitely is on the lower end of the recent hd that i have used but I will give the new drive a chance and we will see how it does compared to all my other drives its just a matter of you get what you pay for (SOMETIMES)I will update this after i instal the new drive and let my opium stand then but as far as this drive goes spend a little more money and get a better drive I hope this helps some of you as I surely dislike the hassle of having to rely on a hd and have it fail so fast I do computer repair and IMHO all the drives made now are just laking the quality they had several years ago everyone is cutting corners as far as cost and it doesn't make sense to have to go through the hassle of reformatting every other month I hope this will help someone else out there to avoid the problems i have encountered

(More customer reviews)My plan was to buy a large drive to backup up my computers and store it in a safety deposit box.After reviewing the unhappy user reports of the newer perpendicular technology disks, I decided to go with the older tried and true technology. The Seagate website lists the current three generations of this size disk: 7200.9, 7200.10 and 7200.11.Generations 10 and 11 are the new perpendicular storage technology.

The particular part number I ordered, ST3500641A, is listed on the Seagate website as the 500GB 7200.9 generation.The part number on the retail box that I received is the same.However, the disk inside lists its part number as ST3500630A.When installed, the disk itself reports its part number as ST3500630A.The Seagate website indicates that this is the 7200.10 generation disk which has different specifications than the 7200.9.

Sadly, what I got is the least desired disk of the three.If I had no other choice but the perpendicular storage generations, it would be better to get the second generation of the perpendicular storage technology: the 7200.11 disk.

(More customer reviews)Some versions of this100 GIGdrive have a bonus 20 GIG. At the price advertised, its a very good dollar per GIGratio. I added this to a DELLDimension 8100, and it worked superbly.
If you get either the standard 100 GIG ATA, or the one with the bonus 20, if you use the utilities on the CDwith the Drive, then you willget the most availablespace on thisdrive. The best thing about the CD is that if needed, it will adjust the Registry when required( In the case of most units,PCs-computers, currentlysold, anything under 137 GIG is perfectlyuseable).Your only manual adjustment is the jumper on the rear,and this is fully documented on the booklet with the drive.
If you want the 100 GIG as a new Cdrive, the best way( if you want to retain the image on the Current "C" Drive) is to place the drive in the second bay, boot up, then copy the system across ( either with the freeXXCOPY softwareavailable on the internet), or use something like DRIVE IMAGE etc; I used XXCOPY, and before changing the drives, I made a full Boot disk so I couldcopy the system filesacross.

A word about some additional software. Do NOT use Maxtor's DDO ( Dynamic Disk Overlay ) option in the MAXBLAST Software if you have both Partition Magic 7 or 8, as well as Norton Utilities Premier 2006. The probability of an issue with BOOT.INI and the HAL.DLLfile is high. The good news is that using PFEDIT and then FDISK/MBR ( and no, thats not a typo... this switch works, and is not officially documented in MS windows TID's, technical info documents), which will change the Partition type from TYPE 44 to the type you need, if necessary, and also FDISK/MBR will rebuild the MBR( Master Boot Record).Like pretty much every MAXTOR I have used,it is extremely easy to install, and your decision is wether to use the ATA, or another variety of Maxtor. Whatever the case, if you need to, there are cards available, if you have a spare PCIslot, that make adding any type of drive, even more easier than could be believed. Whatever size system you have, if you need a Backup drive, MAXTOR has what I consider the best external drives outside of a LACIE. Actually, I love my LacieExternal :-). Anything that can survive a move from a 240 Volt Power system to a 110, and theoreticallyback, as well as surviving LAX ( Los Angeles International Airport) Security,where they do all but Punt your drive through security, is a sturdy device in my view.MAXTOR and LACIE .... What a Team !!!!!!!!!!!!

Best of all, the price is right.I wholeheartedly recommend this external drive to everyone.

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive (through reseller Oyen Digital on Amazon) in order to upgrade the harddrive inside my PS3.Even though it was physically the right size, no one had tested it yet that I could find.I decided to take a chance and test it out.

I am happy to report that there are no problems using this drive to replace the internal PS3 drive.The upgrade was painless and several tutorials exist online to show you how.

After I switched out the drives and turned the PS3 back on, it ask me to format the new drive before I continued.This took about 30 seconds.After the format I went to the system information tab and checked the free space.

After the format the system was reporting 413GB / 465GB Free Space.SWEET!

UPDATE:This drive died in March 2009, so I got about 7 months of use out of it.Looking back, movie files were getting corrupted quite often throughout it's lifespan.Eventually it dies completely and when I would boot the PS3, only the wallpaper would show.I put the old 60GB drive back in and everything worked well again.

(More customer reviews)I received this hard drive about a week ago for Mac OS 10.5.2 Time Machine.The drive looks and works great.I own a Mac Pro so as you can see in the Amazon ad, this thing is like a "mini me" of the Mac Pro which I think is the coolest part of it.I have had no problems (yet) with this HD and I honestly do not see it happening.

Iomega has been around for so many years and I trust their products.There is indeed ONLY one drawback to this drive.When the drive is reading and writing, it could get a little loud.I don't think this would justify one less star because the hard drive itself works perfectly so far.The firewire 400 speed is just fine for Time Machine once per hour.

Apple's website has this drive for sale also and this drive has some great reviews there if you want to check out what some other people say about it.Bottom line, this drive rocks and I would recommend it to any Mac or even PC user out there.The look is just so nice.

(More customer reviews)It was easy to format and install Ubuntu 9.10 on this drive. It's very fast and quiet. Picasa imported 49,000 photos at top speed. It's currently storing 60 GiB with no errors.

The drive was healthy with no bad sectors. It passed the extended self test. All SMART data was in the green.

Packaging was a simple cardboard box, but it had folded cardboard spacers to center and hold the drive half an inch from the top and bottom, 1 inch from the sides, and 1.5 inches from the front and back. Amazon shipped it in a larger box with an air cushion. The drive had a well sealed anti static bag.

I'm very happy with the product. It made a good first impression. I'm using Ubuntu's file encryption and everything still feels fast. It's working well with a first generation SATA motherboard. I didn't need to add any jumper. It appears to fly along at top system speed.

(More customer reviews)I purchased three of these for my Mac Pro Quad Core desk top which I purchased at Amazon. One 500Gb is set up as stand-alone/backup hard drive and Two 500Gb are set up as a RAID. They installed very quickly without any issues at all, are fast and work well with a Dual Processor Intel system, and are super quiet. I emphasize how quiet they are since I've had many Maxtor brand hard drives which while are quite reliable as well, but, seem to vibrate annoyingly at a frequency that resonates through the PC case. These WDs are in fact much quieter considering that TWO of the 500 GB SATAs plus another stand-alone 250 (comes with the Mac Pro for OS/boot drive) and a 3rd 500 Gb WD SATA drive of the same model (a total of four installed) are all installed and running so quietly. There's no noise or vibration to hint that 4 of these are inside the Mac Pro case. Read and Write performance on both the RAIDS and stand alones has been excellent. Highly recommended.

As an amateur photography and aspiring musician, I do A LOT of downloading, editing, and saving on my laptop/desktop. I also am a bookkeeper by day, so all of my client's numbers are backed up there. This drive is incredibly quiet, fast, and seems to never run out of space. The specs are similar to other drives, but I've owned enough Hitachi to know that they are very focused on being Green, so power consumption is very minimal and thus, the spinning of the platters inside is so quiet. I'm also very confident with all the backup measures Hitachi takes with their programming to ensure data protection. I would be devastated if I were to lose any of my creative work, not to mention the bookkeeping files my clients entrust me with. Overall, this drive is unbeatable for the quality and value it provides. AND, it looks VERY sleek in black.
