(More customer reviews)I bought this after I had two IBM 75GXP drives start showing errors.It is significantly quieter than those drives, measures about the same speed and from my research is more reliable (although my research also uncovered the fact that old floppy disks may be more reliable than the IBM drives).I had no problem installing this in my computer and installing Win 2K on it.The drive comes with a few screws, and an ultra dma cable (use this for best performance).If you are not using Win 2K or Win XP you may have to monkey around with ultra dma modes.
This was a good buy.

(More customer reviews)I bought this 320 GB Seagate drive to replace a failed OEM 40 GB Seagate drive that was original equipment in my Dell Dimension 3000 which was about 3yrs old.The new drive has been running and working without a hitch for about a month now.The Dell BIOS had no trouble recognizing it.I have seen a noticeable speed increase with the 7200 rpm vs the OEM 5400 RPM.Of course I'll need a bigger external drive to back this puppy up. . .eventually. :)

The prices are very compatible for both drives and are all carried 3 years warranty.However I'd rather choose Maxtor in the future. The Maxtor drives have very good utility and are very user friendly, they are easy to install and come with software to help get them partitioned and formatted even you are a first time user. Ultra ATA/133 interface with 8MB Cache makes the drive 20% faster than the regular one (2MB Cache size).Have used Maxtor in many years and never had a failure. Great Drive!

I bought this Samsung HDD not knowing it is PATA (was not enough information available from Amazon). Once arrived, I was skeptical that it would work with IDE port. Sure enough, it is compatible and works fine. It does not only work fine, it works better than the older Travelstar HDD. It is quieter and seems to be faster. I know IDE and ATA drives are being phased out by new SATA drives, but for the people - like me - stuck with older computers, this is the best replacement of technology and best value for the money.

I'm keeping it because I just wanted the bare drive anyway, but I wanted to warn others who might be counting on the additional items.

(More customer reviews)So far I'm very pleased with this new Seagate drive.This is the third Seagate drive I've purchased recently and each one has installed without a single glitch.
The main reason for this is the CD/Software that comes with each drivecalled DiskWizard.This program will setup your drive for you, and then mirror your current drive including Operating System or you can install it as a second drive. No more fdisk, format, etc., DiskWizard does all of this for you. (Check Windows version compatibility)
If you are replacing a drive, after running DiskWizard, set the jumper (if not using CS (Cable Select) to Master, remove your old drive, turn the PC on and it boots right up. Truly painless.
This drive has performed very well, is fast, and has a high capacity for storing massive amounts of photos, movies, and mp3's.

The drive seems to be well designed and quality is outstanding.

(More customer reviews)This drive is probably not for you if you have no idea what Bulk/OEM means in the product title. It means that you'll receive just the hard drive in a plain cardboard box - no fancy packaging, no manual, no screws and NO CABLES whatsoever. You can save a few bucks by getting this packaging if you are assembling your own machine (in which case the motherboard and power unit likely include the necessary cables), or if you are replacing a SATA drive. If you are adding a drive to your Dell or HP or whatever branded machine, you will likely need to buy a SATA data cable and possibly a SATA-IDE adapter power cable.

For me the drive works great out of the box. It's a fast and moderately spacious drive at bargain basement price.

You may be able to find an EIDE drive cheaper, but I wanted to try the SATA. Be sure your computer will support it.

The Seagate DiscWizard software makes the process a breeze. The warranty and quietness of the drive are nice pluses.

(More customer reviews)It's pretty hard to go wrong with a Seagate drive; great performance and a five year warranty make this hard to beat, and the price is right.Other than that, there's not much you can say about a hard drive... most of the time you don't care about it, until it crashes!That's why it makes sense to go for the best quality drive you can find, and that would be the Seagate.

While the drive comes with software to migrate your old operating system to the new drive, be warned that it's hard to get a clean migration.I tried this twice, and some things kept getting scrambled in the registry.I finally decided to just reload the operating system from scratch and copy the data files over (made the new drive the master, and the old drive the slave; the documentation explains how to do this, it's easy).A fresh installation is probably for the best anyway, as registries tend to get gunked up over time.Keep in mind that your operating system installation CD may not recognize the full 160GB (my older WinXP Pro CD only saw the first 131GB, until I loaded SP2 later), so you may wind up with a second partition.But that's not a big deal, it's still a great drive, and my system is noticeably faster now.

(More customer reviews)I have had lots of problems with WDC. I was a die hard WDC even though they were a little noisy. I have changed my WDC 80GB at least twice per drive (I have two of them). Some of my other WDC's haven't held up. I've been only using the SEAGATES and I'm much happier with them. They are much quieter, faster and generates less heat. I think that they are the best in the market place.

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive to replace my measly 30GB boot drive that came with my Dell.In order to replace your boot drive, you need to MOVE your OS to the new drive, and make it bootable.Simply dragging files won't do it at all.

After unsuccessfully using Norton Ghost 9 to try to clone my Win XP boot drive, I decided to use the FREE Lifeguard utility that came with the WD drive.Among other tools, it has the ability to image a drive to a WD disk.

It worked on the FIRST TRY!

Here are a couple of hints:
* During the following process, I always had the WD utility disk in my CD-ROM drive.The system would boot to this disk when all else failed.I also made sure the utilities were installed to my old Boot Drive (C:)
* Connect the new WD drive as your SLAVE (your old boot drive should still be a Master).
* Launch the Lifeguard tool, and go to the Set Up Drive option.Tell it you want to make the WD be a NEW BOOT disk (NOT just a drive for additional space), and have it copy over all of your old C: drive.
* Once it completes (can take hours), it says it needs to reboot to finish the job.That scared me to death, since the PC will start up with an old Boot drive as master, and a New Boot drive as a slave.I was terrified it would ruin my registry.I crossed myself a few times and did it.XP booted on my old drive, then the tool re-launched and completed the process.
* At this point, the tool simply says it is finished - and nothing else...I shut down the system, disconnected the old master, configured the new boot drive as a Master, and connected it to the IDE Master.Upon powerup, Win XP came right up!The new Boot Drive automatically came up as C:.
* NOTE: I had a slave drive originally.During the cloning process, I removed it from the system.Once the new drive was configured as a master, I put the slave back, and it came up like nothing happened.It retained the same drive letter as well.

Bottom line: For $150 (after rebate) for a 320GB drive with a very nice toolset, you can't go wrong.This also would make a nice TIVO upgrade drive for Series2 TIVOs.
