Xbrand XB-1002 360 Height Adjustable Laptop Stand with USB 2.0 Hub Review

Xbrand XB-1002 360 Height Adjustable Laptop Stand with USB 2.0 Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having a laptop, I wanted to be able to use the laptop as a desktop in a spare room in my house, but still be able to quickly take the laptop without having to fiddle with a lot of plugs. This X-Brand stand showed a lot of promise, so I gave it a try.

The stand has a four-port USB 2.0 hub built into it. You place it on your desk where you would normally place a display or LCD panel. You plug a USB keyboard, mouse, and any other USB devices you may have (printer, scanner, USB hub) into the stand. At that point, it's ready to go. You simply place your laptop onto it, and plug the stand's USB connector into your laptop's USB port. All of the devices plugged into the stand are then connected to your laptop, giving you a full-sized keyboard, a mouse, and whatever else you have plugged into the USB ports. The stand angles your laptop so that while you cannot use your laptop's keyboard (which is why you plug in a full-sized keyboard), the laptop's display isn't as far back as it would be if you laid it down flat and placed a keyboard in front of it. The display is also raised a bit higher and is closer to eye-level. The end result is that with a single plug, you transform your laptop into a very workable and convenient desktop.

There are some drawbacks to this device. If you have a laptop with a front-mounted CD/DVD drive, it will become inaccessible since the front of your laptop rests on the front lip of the X-Brand stand. Also, this particular stand does not have audio capabilities, meaning that you'll still hear sound out of your laptop's speakers. If you choose this model, I would recommend getting an iMic audio adapter. It's a tiny USB audio device that has an analog input and output. While designed for a Macintosh, it's recognized and fully supported by Windows XP and Vista. With an iMic (or anything similar) plugged into the X-Brand stand, and a full, amplified PC speaker system plugged into the iMic, when your laptop is hooked up, you have full audio capabilities from powered speakers, just like any desktop.

There is a model above this one that has more features. The higher-end X-
Brand stand has a built-in ethernet adapter and audio controller (similar to the iMic). This stand can have powered speakers plugged into it, and be hooked up to your network. When a laptop is placed onto it, you have instant network capabilities and full, powered audio. While this is nice, the majority of laptops have wireless capability and do not need a USB-based ethernet connection. The only flaw I found with that particular X-Brand model was that there was a problem with the audio jack on it, and the left speaker did not work. The sound from the right-speaker did appear to be of low quality, sounding a bit garbled and with some static. I do not know if that was indicative of the defective audio jack (since the left speaker did not work), or of the USB audio chip within the stand. If you already have wireless capabilities on your laptop, and have a wireless network, it'll be more cost-effective to just buy an iMic and this particular model X-Brand stand that only has the USB hub, rather than buying the higher-end model with USB, ethernet, and audio.

All in all, I find the X-Brand USB notebook stand to be well worth the money. It lets me use my laptop like a desktop, yet in a way where it's easy to grab my laptop when I'm on the go.

It came preinstalled in my Dell E1505. It works virtually in every Wi-Fi you might find. I tested it in 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies and works great.

Important: Make sure you get the latest drivers. When I purchased the computer back on February 2007, I had to disable the 802.11n and use 802.11g because the technology was new and the compatibility with my Airport Extreme was bad. Eventually, both the router and the Intel card got firmware updates and worked just fine.

Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks Deluxe Review

I really like my webcam. The picture is very clear on MSN messenger and Yahoo.Furthermore, it works fine for me with only one light on in the room.My fiance has a much more expensive camera that is grainy with a brown-tint to the picture. In contrast to his camera, mine is clear.

The clip:For me, the clip worked fine.I have a Toshiba Satellite. Also, having no desire to move the webcam all around, the short cord is sufficient.

Overall, happy with my purchase.I have a logitech headset (note:Without the headset I did experience an echo when I talked) that I use with the camera.

I like the camera, and am (thus far) not disappointed.

Happy Shopping!

I had a Hitachi Travelstar installed on my laptop. The other day I dropped it and crashed the hard-drive. I bought this Samsung HDD not knowing it is PATA (was not enough information available from Amazon). Once arrived, I was skeptical that it would work with IDE port. Sure enough, it is compatible and works fine. It does not only work fine, it works better than the older Travelstar HDD. It is quieter and seems to be faster. I know IDE and ATA drives are being phased out by new SATA drives, but for the people - like me - stuck with older computers, this is the best replacement of technology and best value for the money.

HP Quickdoc Docking Station Review

HP Quickdoc Docking Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I agree with the other reviewers - this should have come with a power supply.I shouldn't have to use the same one that came with my laptop, since the intention for most people is to be able to carry one with you as needed (it's not like these HPs are rated highly for battery life). And once I have the quickdock set up and everything plugged in, like everyone else I'd prefer to just leave it connected and plug/unplug my laptop as needed for instant access.Fortunately, in my case, I bought an extra power supply which was part of a package deal from HP that included a laptop case and usb mouse.Still, HP should have included this with the quickdock, although the recent price drop to $79 compensates for this somewhat.

That being said, I hooked this up to a new HP DV2210US laptop and it worked like a charm. No issues with pass-through video, and the laptop quickly recognized every device I attached to the dock, including an external cd/dvd drive, external hard drive, printer, keyboard, and mouse.Based on what I had read, I was expecting something to go wrong, but the only issue I encountered was getting video output, and that was a matter of adjusting Windows to recognize an external monitor and nothing at all to do with the Quickdock.I also like the fact that one cable on the dock provides everything - particularly power (recharging my laptop battery as well), along with video and access to all the quickdock ports. And as soon as I disconnect, the unit goes to sleep until I connect later. This is exactly what I was looking for, since my goal was to eliminate a larger desktop pc.At the same time, it doesn't require any quirky connections like older docking stations or take up any excess room on the desk.In fact, considering what you get it's smaller than I had expected.Since I just received this recently, I'll continue putting it through the paces and test the audio and s-video options as well.Beyond that, I think this is a worthwhile purchase for anyone looking for a quick and easy solution.

Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop (2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive) Review

Apple MacBook Pro MB134LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In March 2008, I decided it was time to upgrade from a G4-based laptop to one of the new Intel models. I deliberated back and forth whether the lower priced MacBook would be sufficient or whether to pay the premium for the "Pro" model. Ultimately, I decided upon the MacBook Pro for these reasons.

Construction quality
The aluminum case of the MacBook Pro reminds me of a product made by the Swiss. The build quality is outstanding for a mass-produced device. It feels very substantial, and all the pieces fit together nearly seamlessly. The MacBook's case, however, is made from a high-grade plastic rather than metal. It's nice ... but I found the front edge of the MacBook's case a bit sharp on my wrists as I typed.

Ports
Compared with the MacBook, the MacBook Pro provides an additional USB port plus Firewire 800. The latter is desirable for people who work with video and external drives that have Firewire 800 connectors. The ExpressCard slot is useful for future expansion and services such as wireless broadband (EVDO).

Keyboard
Keyboard experiences are subjective; but I find the keyboard on the MacBook Pro the most comfortable of any laptop I've ever used. It feels solid and responsive. Plus, its backlighting is helpful when typing in dark environments.

Dedicated video
Unlike the MacBook that shares system memory for video (integrated graphics), the MacBook Pro has a dedicated video processor. This is beneficial for driving large external displays and running graphics-intensive applications.

Is the MacBook Pro worth the $700 price differential over a MacBook? That depends on whether you are a general home computer user (i.e., e-mail, web browsing, iTunes, word processing) or someone who uses their laptop for more advanced purposes. My user profile is more in the second category. Also, since I intend to keep this computer for three years, I figure that the premium breaks down to about $233 each year. This seems reasonable to me for something I use every day.

In view of the additional quality and benefits that the MacBook Pro offers, I think its higher price brings with it commensurate value. It's hard to imagine even finicky laptop users being disappointed with the MacBook Pro.

P.S. -- There are two 15-inch MacBook Pro models. I bought the 2.4 gHz "entry level" model. It is the better value. I do not feel the 2.5 gHz MacBook Pro is worth the extra $500.

Also, people who care to add system memory (beyond the stock 2 gigabytes supplied by Apple) ought to purchase it from a third-party vendor and install it themselves. It is a simple process.

Product Description:
Stylishly and intelligently designed for mobile professionals, Apple's MacBook Pro now includes Apple's Multi-Touch technology (which debuted with the MacBook Air), allowing you to pinch, swipe, or rotate to enlarge text, advance through photos, or adjust an image. And it gets a serious speed bump from Intel's latest 2.5 GHz 45-nanometer Penryn series Core 2 Duo processor (with 6 MB L2 cache), which also helps to reduce power requirements and save on battery life. This model (MB134LL/A ) also has a mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display measuring 15.4 inches and a state-of-the art NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video card with 512 MB of GDDR3 video RAM.

The 15-inch MacBook Pro offers a mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display with an antiglare finish that's perfect for color-minded professionals. Meticulously designed and encased in sleek and sturdy aluminum, the MacBook Pro measures just 1 inch thin and weighs 5.4 pounds. Your hands have room to spread out on the full-size keyboard with crisp, responsive keys, and the MacBook Pro has a built-in ambient light sensor that adjusts the keyboard and display brightness so it's easy to work in low-light settings. Other standard Apple "extras" includes a built-in iSight video camera and Apple's magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter, which safely disconnects when under strain.
It's pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system, which enables easy backup of your most important data via Time Machine, a redesigned desktop that helps eliminate clutter. It also comes with the iLife '08 suite of applications--including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes--and the newest version of the fast-loading Safari web browser. Other hardware features include a 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (which can be upgraded to 4 GB), an 8x combo Superdrive (for burning dual-layer DVDs as well as CDs), built-in Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), FireWire 400 and 800 ports, DVI video output, and an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G wireless networking.
Apple Innovations
The MacBook Pro is the culmination of years of refining hardware and software design to an integrated art, and Apple's Multi-Touch technology is just the latest innovation to be added to it. The advanced trackpad now allows you to flip through photos, enlarge text, and adjust an image using just your fingers. It also comes with a MagSafe power adapter connector, which offers a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So, if you happen to trip over a power cord, you won't send MacBook Pro flying off a table or desk--the cord simply disconnects, without damage to either the cord or the system.

The magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter breaks cleanly away, without damage to either the cord or the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has battery life that rivals most notebooks in its class. If you'd like to make that battery last even longer, Mac OS X has a few tricks up its sleeve. Go to System Preferences, click Energy Saver, and change battery optimization from Normal to Better Battery Life. Or tell MacBook Pro to reduce its screen brightness and give yourself a little more time untethered.
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
Experience improved energy efficiency, expanded wireless connectivity, and amazing battery life with the 45nm Penryn series Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, which has a 2.50 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a super-sized 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The new hafnium-infused circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors--conserves even more energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet. With a whopping 6 MB of shared L2 cache, data and instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently. And, because the processor cores share the L2 cache, either can use the entire amount if the other happens to be idle.

Your hands have room to spread out on the full-size keyboard with crisp, responsive keys. Hard Drive and Memory
The 250 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1024 MB) have an industry-leading 667 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to 4 GB.
Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.
Display and Graphics
The 15.4-inch widescreen TFT display offers a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and an antiglare widescreen display that's perfect for color-minded professionals. The display is backlit by light emitting diodes (LEDs), which gives it a lighter weight and more power efficiency than the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which most notebooks employ. It's also better for the environment, thanks to its new mercury-free display.
Video and graphics are powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card, which is boosted by 512 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications. The GeForce 8600M GT brings a new level of realism to the MacBook Pro with its 16-lane PCI Express architecture, 16x full screen anti-aliasing, 128-bit High Dynamic Range rendering, and a texture fill rate of up to 8.2 billion per second.
Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the display bezel is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Connect to your network, a desktop monitor and all your peripherals with two USB 2.0, one FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, one DVI video output, and one Gigabit Ethernet. Other Features

Two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, ExpressCard/34 slot

The 20 GB hard drive in my wife's notebook PC was almost full and we wanted to upgrade to a larger drive while preserving all of her programs, data, settings, etc. I did a search and found EZ Gig to be the preferred notebook hard drive upgrade/replacement solution.

It comes with excellent instructions and everything you need to get the job done (except the new drive which is purchased separately). It took less than 30 minutes to install the software and hardware, make a backup image of the old drive, start the cloning process, and install the new drive in the notebook PC. Obviously, the copying process can take a few hours, but that can be done at night or on the weekend when the PC is not in use.

This is an outstanding product and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to upgrade/replace the hard drive in their notebook PC.

Everything that was bad about Kensington's previous generation lock, the three wheel Kensington 64050 ComboSaver Notebook Lock, has been fixed in this one.

As I write this, both the three wheel 64050 and this new generation 64344 are on the market, but the three wheel lock is awkward to use and this one is easy. This one has none of the accidental combination reset problems of the earlier lock and is a bit more robust. This one is just a bit bulkier than the 3 wheel version, but has a nice strap to keep it coiled up when stored. It works well on my MacBook Pro, and stores neatly in my Incase Nylon Sleeve for MacBook Pro.

AppleCare Protection Plan - For Portable Apple Computers 13.3 Inches and Below Review

AppleCare Protection Plan - For Portable Apple Computers 13.3 Inches and Below
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to work in an Apple Store. We were pressured to push AppleCare.I only took the job with the understanding I would NEVER pressure a customer to buy something they didn't need. They forced me to push .Mac just the same, but I made it clear to customers my heart wasn't in that disappointing product.

But my heart was in AppleCare. For two simple reasons:Apple gave excellent care, and frankly, you needed it.Look at Consumer Reports listings of product breakdowns, and you discover Apples break as much as PCs.As others will tell you, AppleCare is NOTHING compared to paying for repairs out of pocket.

But one day I got a customer who said something mind-boggling to me.He said, "I never buy AppleCare, ever."I'm like, why not? He said, "I unload my Macs on eBay one month before the year warranty runs out. This way, you're always running a new, zippy Mac, with the latest operating system installed instead of purchased."I thought that was a little kooky, but the more I thought about it, it was genius. For iMacs and Mac-Minis, no. because the AppleCare is relatively inexpensiveBut for laptops?

Brilliant.

Think about it.Like it or not, laptop batteries seem to go lame or dead by year two.Laptop prices also drop a bit each year. With a recession slamming against us, and Apple plainly stating prices will fall (a rarity indeed), put the pieces together.

Suppose you buy an $1100 Macbook on Amazon, right now.Word has it the line is going to be updated in September. So you buy it, and sure enough, new MacBooks pop into existence.Maybe an entry level one at 1050.So you sell your newish MacBook on eBay for $950.That means it will cost you $250 to upgrade to that new MacBook you didn't know you wanted. But $250 is the cost of AppleCare, and now you have a brand new Mac, new battery, and 1 year warranty.

Know what a new battery costs from Apple? Over a hundred.Know what the next operating system will cost, if you bought the box?Over a hundred.

Yes, there are a lot of ifs and buts in this process, and so if you can't sell your MacBook on eBay for a good price, or the price on the new MacBook doesn't drop:buy AppleCare. You have a year to buy it.

mStand Laptop Stand By Rain Design Review

mStand Laptop Stand By Rain Design

I purchased this for use with a MacBook Pro 15".I totally agree that the stand is of very high quality and beautifully designed.

Unfortunately, I haven't found the product useful because the "slope" of the mStand is quite steep and the lid of the MacBook Pro cannot be pushed back very far.Sitting at my desk, I would need to open the laptop a bit further to get the screen angle just right, but I cannot push the MBP screen back any further, unfortunately, and the mStand's angle is fixed, so...

This product would be very good with a laptop where you can push the screen open to a fairly wide angle or where the balance of screen angle, mStand angle, chair-desk-your height are all perfectly aligned.Otherwise, the mStand won't work so well "out of the box" and you might need to "help" it by placing things under it to play with the height further, thereby distracting from the "clean" design.

Yes, the latch of the MBP is covered by the "lip" of the mStand, so you'd have to lift the laptop off the stand to open the computer or just leave it permanently open or not quite fully closed.Having said this, the optical drive is completely accessible when using this stand, not covered by the lip at all.

The item arrived super-fast, so I have no quarrels with that. However, the laptop was in worse condition than described by the seller: on the outside everything was nice and shiny, but I guess nobody bothered to dust the inside of the poor thing. It took me about 20 minute and two cans of compressed air to make it look "normal"; the laptop came with a few missing screws, so I had to buy those as well; it coms with Windows XP Pro, SP1, so you'll need to do ALL the updates in the past 5 years. Loads of fun...
All in all, the laptop runs great (once cleaned) and it was definitely worth its price.

3M Vertical Notebook Stand, Ergonomic, 3-Inch Vertical Adjustment, Black Review

3M Vertical Notebook Stand, Ergonomic, 3 inch Vertical Adjustment, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use multiple laptops for work as I can transport them from office to office easily, but hate typing on the small, cramped keyboards. This stand is very nice as it holds any size laptop very securely, is adjustable to any degree of tilt all the way to full vertical, and comes apart for slipping into a laptop bag and taking with you.

The vertical placement that this can do is great, hard to find in any other one. No way these will slip out either, very secure design.

To use this effectively though you will not be able to type on the notebook keyboard while it is in the stand, you want want a mini USB keyboard to plug into and place in front, or a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. So much nicer though to give it some air and raise the screen to eye level.

Took off one star because it is flat along the bottom and blocks access to the buttons on the front of my Dell XPS 1210 for things like mute and volume control, there is a Kensington stand I also have from the Dell site that has a curved front to allow access to those buttons, but it does not go vertical like this one, so have to choose what is best for you.

Overall, very good, highly recommend for getting your desk space back.
