Compaq Presario FS740 17" Flat CRT Multimedia Monitor Review

Purchased this monitor as part of a bundle with an Emachines system @ Circuit City. The monitor has a great picture and comes with JBL Platinum Speakers and built in microphone. While I'm not a fan of built in mic's this one works OK.The speakers are powered and need to be manually turned on and off via the volume control. They can be hung on the side of the monitor or they also can be put on the desktop with supplied stands. They sound pretty good but sound distorted at higher levels. They are a huge step up from the supplied e-machines speakers that came with the CPU though.Controls are easy to use and all cables and such are provided....

Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24" LCD Monitor Review

Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24' LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Crisp, clean, bright picture. Brilliant colors. Much better viewing area than the cheaper competition. Hands down the best monitor I tried. I have tried:

Gateway FHD2400 24" widescreen
Samsung 2496HM 24" widescreen
Samsung 245BW 24" widescreen

and this one.

The 245T has a pixel viewing angle of 178 degrees compared to the others which are 160 degrees. That means that I can see all the screen including the edges of the screen clearly. 24 inches is big. With a lesser viewing angle, the only clear viewability is directly forward at eye level. With 160 degrees, I look to the lower left edge of the screen and images are blurry and less color. 178 degrees allows it to be as clear and crisp no matter where my eye/head position is. With the 160 degrees, when I walked over to the monitor (standing) I could not see the elements of the taskbar (e.g. look for a "new mail" icon). I had to bend down and look at eye level to make out what was on the screen. With 178 degrees, I can see it while standing up. Huge difference.

The colors on this are the best too. The picture is clean, whiter, hotter, more adjustable. All the others had overly-red saturation no matter what settings I tried.

The 245T has actual buttons rather than the dumbly-designed touch/heat sensitive panel on some others.

I ordered this on Amazon, and it arrived next day and works beautifully.
It's more expensive than the other monitors, but I use a monitor all day. Chintzing on a monitor would be a bad idea, like trying to save money by buying a cheaper mattress, or a cheap desk chair. Not a good idea to buy bad quality for something that is an integral part of my life.

If my needs were less vigorous, like paying bills online or other tasks that only involved brief episodes with a computer, I might be satisfied with one of the other cheap models. But in my opinion, there is absolutely no comparison between the 245T and anything else I saw in my extensive searching for a 24" widescreen monitor. The 245T is worth it.

SAMSUNG P2370 23-Inch LCD Monitor Review

SAMSUNG P2370 23 inch LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATED: June 20, 2009

I have to admit, I was a bit concerned about purchasing this online, virtually sight unseen.I went to Best Buy and saw the 20" version of this display and wasn't overly pleased, but then realized that the demo Best Buy had running on the monitor was not in the model's native resolution. So I came home and after a couple of days of deliberation with myself I took the plunge and bought this from Amazon. The display is a cinch to assemble.I've read some reviews where people have had great difficulty putting the stand together then attaching the stand to the monitor itself. This simply is not the case.Everything is keyed (all you have to do is pay attention to the carved out notches) and slid together very easily, no difficulty at all."Professional" reviews have indicated that the monitor is very wobbly. This is the case to an extent, but it takes a fair jolt to get this monitor to tip.In all practicality who is going to be hitting the monitor with their hand anyway trying to get it to tip over.Perhaps a good earthquake, a running child or clumsy oaf is needed.

Buyers will definitely want to take some time to calibrate the monitor.I am currently running Windows 7 RC1 so some calibration tools are included that don't come in previous versions of Windows (including Vista, that I have found anyway).A Google search for "monitor calibration" will help aid in this process."Professional" reviews have indicated that gray colors are not represented correctly, taking on a "yellowish hue."Out of the box using default settings this seemed to be the case (you'll see what I mean if you open a picture using Windows Photo Viewer, maximize the window and notice the color of the border surrounding the image), and using the monitor color profile that ships with the LCD (which Adobe Photoshop CS3 reports as being corrupted), but after customizing the monitor settings and getting a new color profile generated by Windows 7, this color turned from the "yellowish" hue to a light blue color as was displayed by my previous LCD (this of course is based on my current color scheme found in Windows 7).

Games play flawlessly, with good color, picture quality and vibrancy. No bleeding or blur with this 2ms response time display. The monitor includes presets for gaming, but if you calibrate the monitor properly this seems to be unneeded.Your mileage may vary depending on personal preference, but using in-game settings with brightness, contrast etc. can help get the job done.Games I tested in 1920x1080 were Crysis, the Half-Life 2 series, Far Cry 2, Unreal Tournament III, Stalker: Clear Sky, Street Fighter IV Benchmark (now available for download) and Bejeweled Twist. All played perfectly, again no blur or bleeding.I tested out a HD copy of "The Dark Knight" with no issues, perfect clarity in all respects. Some complaints (again from "professional" reviews) state that there is some white light bleed-through at the top edge of the screen on dark pictures.I found this to be very minor and not distracting at all.My desktop wallpaper images are native to 1920x1080 which is crisp and clear, so you'll probably want to find some HD or widescreen wallpapers for your viewing pleasure.

Settings for the monitor I have found to be optimal (at least for myself) are as follows:
Picture, Brightness: 50
Picture, Contrast: 76
Picture, Sharpness: 68
MagicBright: Custom
Response Time: Normal
Color, MagiColor: Off
Red: 50
Green: 50
Blue: 50:
Color Tone: Custom
Color Effect: Off
Gamma: Mode1

It may also be advantageous to use the ClearType technology built into Windows (MacOS probably has something similar), again personal preference so your mileage may vary.Windows 7 is a bit more extensive in customizing ClearType than prevoius versions of Windows.

I am very pleased with this monitor and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality display at a reasonable price.

This monitor is absolutely amazing. The images are sharp and the text is very clear.Plus the monitor being flat is a plus also! Some monitors I've seen have a low refresh rate, but you won't have that problem with this monitor.I use it at 1600x1200 resolution and the refresh rate is 85 Hz.No flicker there :)The only minuses I can think of are the 2 very very faint horizontal lines in the screen but that cant be helped since its an aperature grill and that the monitor is big.But hey, if you're buying a 21" monitor, you'd expect it to be big right?Buy this monitor and you won't be disappointed.

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently did some much needed upgrades for my home office and this by far my favorite.I first saw it in Best Buy, came home to check for online reviews and to see if I could find it cheaper...I did at Amazon!

It's VERY easy to set up and is crystal clear.( I mean, razor sharp -- no stretched or blurred look anywhere!)However, there was something not quite right with the colors (especially greens) that really bothered me.PLUS the HP "My Display" software that goes with it that contains all of the drivers etc, is not fully functional on non HP machines. (meaning no calibration was available for color or contrast beyond what's built into the monitor itself which was never enough to fix my problem)I was so frustrated and disappointed.(I had been warned of this on another site but thought I'd take a gamble)Well, after trying to hook it up via the HDMI (from VGA) cable that came with it to a new $150 video card -- the colors were still way off and now the screen was all jumpy from that stupid card...(that went right back!) Then, I noticed something when I right clicked on my desktop to adjust my display settings (in XP pro) there was a selection (that had been there all along...duh) that said NVIDIA Control Panel (my internal graphics card) and I was able to calibrate the colors and adjust everything else there and now everything's hunky dory! When it first boots up, the colors look a little neon-ish again but within seconds it goes to the profile I created from my graphics card software.I am sure many would have figured it out sooner than I did, I just wanted to prevent anyone else from beating their head against the wall for a week like I did if I could.(BTW, I have completely removed the video card that I bought and it's hooked up via VGA and it is still crisp and clear)

**BTW, even though the My Display software is largely useless for me, I left it there. For some reason when I uninstalled it, the light that's under the transparent power button on the top of the monitor goes away. That was the only noticeable change after uninstalling it but it annoyed me, so I reinstalled it and it's back on and I just ignore the software**

My husband and I publish a local magazine that is glossy and full color and I am able to do so much more with this monitor than I could before.I can view two (sometimes 3) projects side by side if need be...I love that! And typing an email in outlook looks like it's in about a 60 font! And programs like Illustrator where you need a lot of workspace it's invaluable.I never have to scroll around to grab or view something. My last monitor was a 19" Sony flat panel (that cost more than TWICE what this one did 4 years ago) and I thought it was just fine but once I plugged this lil beauty in I quickly passed it on to my son for his computer.I haven't needed to use the portrait position of the screen so I haven't even tried it.But it came that way when it arrived and was very easy to swivel back around.

One bad thing...don't count on ditching your speakers for the ones that come with this one -- man do they stink!I swear my laptop has better speakers. But it's sort of like people griping that their cell phone camera doesn't take good enough pictures. If you want a good camera buy a camera! If you want a good monitor buy this one and just pretend the speakers aren't even there. The price is way worth it even without the speakers.

Samsung P2370HD 23-Inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor - Black Rose Review

Samsung P2370HD 23 inch Full 1080p HDTV LCD Monitor - Black Rose
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The P2370HD is an exceptional monitor for people with modest demands of their display. On the plus side, it has very good colour for a TN-type panel (more on this in a second), absolutely fantastic connection options, one of te fastest displays in current availability and a bright, vibrant picture which is only offset by a merely-average black level and some backlight bleed with extremely dark images (helped by Dynamic Contrast but not in all situations). It lacks a pivot, a terrible omission, but is still fairly stable on its (non-adjustable) base. It connects to 4:3 and 16:9 sources, even composite and component SD sources, as well as HDMI, DVI and VGA sources (but DualLink DVI-D is strongly advised), and the 1920x1080 native resolution is perfect for 16:9 movies and BluRay.

Thus, if you simply need a very good TV or home computer display, stop reading now and get out your credit card. However, this is only a *fair* monitor for professional photo or graphics work. Like all TN displays, it suffers from slight but significant changes in gamma when viewed more than a few degrees off-axis, and even at 6500 K has a teensy pink tinge which can be compensated for with good colour calibration, but with a corresponding reduction in gamut. Despite sRGB's 2.2 gamma, this monitor performs much better closer to 1.8 or to its native gamma of 2.7+. There is also faint banding on grey ramp tests which is to be expected from a 6-bit display, again compensatable by compressing the dynamic range, but then it also takes away from the contrast range the monitor has to offer. Incidentally, don't use Dynamic Contrast when connected to your PC or Mac, it's really very distracting. Adjust the contrast and brightness yourself.

Note that all of the things I've complained about will go completely unnoticed by probably 90% of customers and this monitor outperforms a great many lesser displays which show problems similar to this much worse, which is why I gave it the four-star rating. However, for the 10% of us who need a colour-perfect display and can tolerate a slightly slower speed, an IPS panel would be strongly advised, even for a display that is (for a TN) as good as this one. While I'm keeping mine to use as -- surprise! -- a television set, I'll be buying an IPS panel for my photo work. But everybody else will love it.

I am using this monitor on an Apple early 2009 series 13" Aluminum Macbook via an AppleMiniDisplayPort->DVI adapter and the supplied DVI cable. The monitor is flawless (no dead pixels), crisp, bright and looks great at its full 1920x1080 resolution in millions of colors. Its response time is fast even with the Macbook driving both its internal screen at 1280x800 as well as this display.

This monitor allows me to use my Macbook as my sole machine (used to have a 24" iMac on my desk which was great but keeping multiple machines in sync is always a pain).I have not had to make any adjustments to the screen and its great for business use as well as viewing movies and pictures.

Thanks DELL - this is a great monitor regardless of price and the fact its such high quality at such a low price point makes it an exceptional value.

ViewSonic VP2365WB 23-Inch IPS LCD Monitor Review

ViewSonic VP2365WB 23 inch IPS LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

This is a great monitor -- well thought out, great ergonomics, excellent color reproduction, and of course, a spectacular field of view, thanks to the premium IPS screen.I can look at this screen from virtually any angle without color shifts or brightness changes.

Don't believe the reviews that complain about dimness problems...I don't know what kind of retina-searing technology people are looking for, but this monitor is actually a bit brighter than the LED-backlit screen on my MacBook, which is itself a fairly bright screen.I run them both side-by-side, and I couldn't be happier with the pairing.I've had no complaints about image quality, whatsoever.

Aside from the quality of the panel, this monitor has lots of nice little touches that I demand from a "pro" monitor:a 5-inch height adjust (ESSENTIAL for me, as I'm over six feet tall); the ability to pivot the screen 180 degrees; a wide, stable stand; and a minimalist design. This is not one of those cheap-looking, shiny plastic monstrosities that you'll find at Costco -- the bezel is thin and unobtrusive, and the buttons are tasteful and small. It's no Cinema Display, but it's as nice a design as you'll find without shelling out twice the cash. (Alas!)

My complaints are minor:the controls are a bit goofy to use, and more thought could have been put into the on-screen display. Also, I'd love a version of the display with an LED backlight.Other than that, I think it's a great buy.Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates the quality improvements given by an IPS display.

Samsung PX2370 23-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor with LED Backlight Review

Samsung PX2370 23 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor with LED Backlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is by far the best monitor I have ever had, that being said i have previously
owned a 23" LED LCD 1080p and a 26" LCD monitor. This monitor by far surpasses the
image quality and design of both those products.

LED Backlighting: My previous LED monitor was just about as good as this one but
the previous monitor had a glass pane over the screen. This monitor however has
a matte finished screen for a no glare experience...

Contrast: Obviously the contrast ratio is not 5M : 1 but it is the best on any
monitor I have ever seen. A little bit of tweaking in the color menu and you
will have life like pictures/video/gaming all on this screenBoot Speed: Some reviews on here state that the Boot Speed is slow, this is not
the case with mine, it boots up in less than a second after touching the touch
sensitive power button conveniently located on the bottom middle of the bezel....

Design: Most people complain about not having a swivel option... Just turn your
monitor its not that hard.... Others complain about a lack of a height adjustment...
Just sit lower/higher... The tilt adjustment is all I need to have this monitor set
up just the way i want it...

Lack of Inputs: This monitor comes with a DVI and a HDMI input... Which is not a problem
for me because all my devices support those two formats. But to everyone else that has
a component hook up, you are SOL... If you have a VGA connection the monitor comes with a
very useful VGA to DVI cable that works pretty well with my Sony Vaio....

Response Time: My old LED monitor had a terrible response time, and I am an avid gamer so I
need a good response time, well this monitor excels in the response time category, games
are crisp with no blur and the image responds perfectly with every move I make!!!

In Conclusion: This monitor is sexy, lightweight, and has the most amazing picture you
will ever see in a 23 in. PLEASE GO BUY THIS PRODUCT....What's great about it: LED Backlighting, Contrast, Brightness, Boot Speed, Simplicity...
What's not so great: Buttons on back, Lack of inputs...

I purchased this television as a computer monitor.I wanted it because of the LCD backlight, built in speakers, and large screen, for a computer monitor. When I purchased it my computer had not yet been built so I hooked it up to my cable box and WOW what a great picture!Granted I was coming from an old CRT television but hey this thing was very impressive! It is very customizable and can be set on preset settings as well.It worked great to replace a 1981 circa Magnavox in my bedroom.I used it for a couple of weeks as a television and when my computer came in I switched it to a computer monitor.I had purchased an HDMI cable from AMAZON before my computer arrived.Plugged in the HDMI cable and the power and keyboard and wal-la the picture came on with the sound! No need to configure the system to set up, it just works!Right out of the box.Being an informed consumer I had read that you need to calibrate the screen.Well when the monitor first came on I understood why.Things seemed a little blurry.I set the Veiwsonic to Computer and it helped but this was not yet the solution.I then found in Windows 7 the clear type set up under the control panel and displays.Once you configure to clear type this thing looks great! It is like reading on a piece of paper!Screens and videos look great!I am running Windows 7 64-bit professional. The high resolution high definition screen is very impressive! For me the price was right because I have a computer monitor that can be a television if I want as well.It has three HDMI connections so I can connect another computer, maybe a Mac Mini in the future, and later maybe an X-box 360!You can easily switch with the touch sensitive controls or use the remote. The colors and contrast are really incredible. This television/monitor is a great deal for the money!I caught mine at a good time to purchase because I got it for about twenty-five dollars under three-hundred dollars! If you read these reviews often you will know why I wrote it like that.It runs cool, comes on after a 5 second Viewsonic warm up screen, switches between sources easily, looks great and works like it is supposed to!In short I like this monitor a lot!

To me it rivals the Apple LED Cinema Display.Notice I said rivals not as good as or surpasses! This television is great! It works as a monitor wonderfully!Part of the reason I purchased it is due to the fact that I wanted built in speakers and an HDMI connection.I did not want to have a video cable, power cord, speakers, speaker wire, and another power cord for the speakers forming a web on my desk. This set up is clean and simple.HDMI cable to the back of the computer to the monitor, then everything works. One power cord for the monitor and one for the computer. Simple!I compared it to the Apple Cinema Display because I was thinking of using one of these to connect to my PC.Unfortunately you would need to by the Apple Mini Display video connector to HDMI conversion plug and pray that it would work.I could never get assurances that you could get PC drivers for the camera and I did not find anyone that said that it worked when they connected to a PC.Oh and also to buy the Apple you would need to cough up three times the money!I know the Apple display is IPS has a glass screen (the Viewsonic has the plasticky laptop screen) and a built in video camera.Still this does not make it worth nearly a thousand dollars! I do wish that Viewsonic would place a glass screen on this television; it would move it up in class, and admittedly in cost.I wish they would install a camera on the top of the screen, a good one, like the new ones from Logitech! Then they would have a true Apple competitor! When I looked around for a large screen, LED backlight, High definition monitor, with multiple HDMI connections, and built in speakers the Viewsonic television is the only one I could find this affordably. This is the only monitor, or television, that came close to the Apple Display, and after purchasing it and using it as both a television and a monitor, I feel that it has lived up to its printed specifications and my expectations!Buy one I think you will agree!

One more thing; I purchased this through Amazon along with another item through J&R Audio.I had to return the other item after purchasing it.I could not have had a better experience from the folks at J&R Music. They were kind, helpful, and did everything they said that they would do and even faster than they said they would do it.It is rare these days to find a company that under promises and over delivers and I feel these folks did.I am always leery of ordering from a reseller and these folks gave me confidence!

Samsung B2430H 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black Review

Samsung B2430H 24 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black
Average Reviews:

Quick Review:

PRO:By far the nicest, cleanest picture I've ever had using a monitor.Amazing color and clarity, plus supports RGB for older monitors, HDMI for a TV/game input, and DVI for a normal computer display.
CON:No buttons.Front touchpanel not friendly to my ogre hands. While you read this review, you'll think I'm an idiot for having trouble turning the thing on and getting it to switch to the right display (yes, I tried the 'power' and 'Source' buttons). But I just might have my comeuppance when you're sitting in front of a darkened monitor that won't display anything. Some fiddling/luck/time got it working and it's been a champ since.

PS:This monitor (at time of review) is listed under 3D monitors on amazon.com.It is not 3D ready for Nvidia's 3D tech, and at 60Hz, the best you'd get is 30fps 3D, if your graphics card even supports that. However, even though I bought this monitor on the off-chance that it was 3D compatible, I'm still keeping it since it's so pretty.

HP W2338H 23-Inch Widescreen Monitor Review

HP W2338H 23 inch Widescreen Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would have gave it five stars but read why I didn't below.

Great color, nice and bright display, well made. I traded in my dual 19" monitor set-up and I am very happy.

Pros:
built-in speakers (when you don't need to listen to music at a loud volume)
true high definition
hdmi port
stand allows you to place your keyboard on it to clear up desk space
power button and power indicator on top so it doesn't annoy you
swivels and pivots

Cons:
only has vga and hdmi ports, no dvi
only came with the vga cord, no hdmi (Acer comes with all three)
lousy one-year warrantyI like it. The only comparable in size and cost is the Acer Computer X233H BD 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor. It's got a three-year warranty and vga, hdmi, and a dvi ports. Also comes with all three cables.

I have not compared the two next to each other. If the graphics look as good on the Acer, I'm going to return this HP and get the Acer since it has more ports for better adaptability, more cords so you don't have to spend any money, and a three-year warranty for peace of mind. Also, the Acer has 40000 to 1 contrast ratio vs the HP's 30000 to 1 contrast ratio.

I will update when I get to review the Acer.

Updated on May 11th, 2009:

Well I checked out the Acer X233H and though it is more flexible and have more bang for the buck, this is definitely a nicer monitor performance wise. First of all, the Acer has a flat picture. Less glare but the picture and graphics of the HP really come out at you. They are sharper and crisper than the Acer.

I really like the location of the power button on the HP because it is on top and not in front starting at you as a distraction if you are using the monitor at little to low light. I have a very nice back-lit Logitech keyboard and when I type in little to no light, there is no glaring power indicator in front of me.

I also think that the stand of the Acer is really weak and though it looks good, is not multi-functional like the HP, where you can store the keyboard, freeing up your desk when you need to use your desk.

With that said, I am keeping my HP and not getting the Acer.

Gateway FHX2300 bmd 23-Inch Widescreen LCD Display - Black Review

Gateway FHX2300 bmd 23 inch Widescreen LCD Display - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to buy a new monitor for myself and give my dad my old 21" Gateway LCD. I shopped around and looked high and low for something with a nice dot pitch , fast responce time , bigger than my old 21" and at a fair price. I was not pleased with the old reviews of the last 24" Gateway so I stayed away from it. I saw a local store near me had this one in stock so I decided to take a look. Lucky for me and them that they had it on display. I looked at it ( 20" model ) and was very impressed by how crisp and clear the picture was. I noticed the text was tight and clean, very easy to read ( 0.265 Pixel Pitch )<---- this is why, the smaller the number the tighter the pixels are, the clearer the text will be. My other test in store was to put it on screen saver and see what "BLANK" looked like, test it to see back light bleed. Wow not bad at all, really not at all.

I bought the 23" model, I was sold after looking at how good it looked in the store. Funny thing is Gateway still does not have this monitor up on there website. Anyway, hook up was so easy, came out of the box fairly easy but was packed very well. It came with an HDMI cable, DVI cable and a VGA cable also the power cord. The base just popped on to the bottom of the screen with ease, so easy that when I did it I wasn't sure that I did it. Lets boot it up and see how it looks, NO DEAD or STUCK pixels yay! Had to tone down the brightness and contrast, lowerd the gamma. Breathtaking, as I saw my wallpaper come to life on this 23" beauty.

Game time, lets see how World Of Warcraft looks. It looks like a totaly new game, the colors really pop. No ghosting, or anything wrong. Really looks fantastic! Very happy with this screen and my dad was very happy to get my old Gateway 21" for his basement pc.

If your looking for a really nice monitor to buy I would refer you to this Gateway FHX2300 23" monitor. If thats a bit too big for you then go for the smaller HX2000 20" monitor. Both are winners in my book. The reason why I didn't jump at this monitor rite away was there where no reviews on it. I was waiting for someone to give it some sort of feedback. So, if your looking for a review here it is. At this price for this monitor, buy it. I compared this one to the HP 23" version and this Gateway beats it. Smaller bevel, makes the screen look even bigger. Priced less, stand does not wobble, nice and sturdy. Ok hehehe thats enough, I'm going on and on and on how wonderful and happy I am with my new 23" Gateway FHX2300. I should be doing better things like playing WoW than be on here. Bye...

HP 2509m 25-Inch Diagonal Full HD LCD Monitor (Black) Review

HP 2509m 25 inch Diagonal Full HD LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been doing tons and tons of research about various monitors over the course of about a month or so. Recently I stopped by frys electronics and they had a sale on this monitor so I looked it up but there werent many reviews about it, however there were great reviews about last year's model. So I took the plunge I bought it yesterday and I love it. I have it hooked up to my macbook pro 13 inch, and am using 1080p resolution, it looks fantastic. The speakers suck of course but nobody buys a monitor just for the speakers.

Positive
-looks great
-colors are fantastic
-low response time
-HDMI port

negative
- only one hdmi port
- bad speakers
- no usb hub

However, This a FANTASTIC monitor, it is much more than I expected, the picture quality is amazing.
I would highly recommend this HP 2509m monitor
