Compaq Presario FS740 17" Flat CRT Multimedia Monitor Review

Compaq Presario FS740 17' Flat CRT Multimedia Monitor
Average Reviews:

Purchased this monitor as part of a bundle with an Emachines system @ Circuit City. The monitor has a great picture and comes with JBL Platinum Speakers and built in microphone. While I'm not a fan of built in mic's this one works OK.The speakers are powered and need to be manually turned on and off via the volume control. They can be hung on the side of the monitor or they also can be put on the desktop with supplied stands. They sound pretty good but sound distorted at higher levels. They are a huge step up from the supplied e-machines speakers that came with the CPU though.Controls are easy to use and all cables and such are provided....

Sony CPD-G500 21" FD Trinitron Monitor Review

Sony CPD-G500 21' FD Trinitron Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This monitor is absolutely amazing. The images are sharp and the text is very clear.Plus the monitor being flat is a plus also! Some monitors I've seen have a low refresh rate, but you won't have that problem with this monitor.I use it at 1600x1200 resolution and the refresh rate is 85 Hz.No flicker there :)The only minuses I can think of are the 2 very very faint horizontal lines in the screen but that cant be helped since its an aperature grill and that the monitor is big.But hey, if you're buying a 21" monitor, you'd expect it to be big right?Buy this monitor and you won't be disappointed.

NEC LCD1760V-BK 17" LCD Monitor (Black) Review

NEC LCD1760V-BK 17' LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The NEC MultiSync LCD 1760V monitor is an excellent choice if you are considering an LCD monitor. In case you didn't know, NEC-Mitsubishi Display Systems, the manufacturer, is one of the first companies to produce LCD monitors, so they really know what they are doing. The LCD screen itself measures... you guessed it... 17 inches diagonally, and the image is sharp and bright even at 70% brightness and 50% contrast. The native resolution is 1280x768; if you think you'll get eye strains at this level, don't worry: the monitor comes with a free downloaded copy of Liquid View, which makes Windows easier to look at.
Setup was a total breeze for me.I just took the monitor out of the box, hooked up the power and monitor cables, and turned it on.NEC's exclusive automatic adjustment immediately set the contrast and brightness to my liking. The only adjustment you may need to make is on the PC itself: according to an instruction sheet taped to the monitor, you should set the display adapter to 1280x1024 at 60Hz.
The 1760V is stylish in either black or white.Because it's made in China, the plastic does feel a little "cheap" when you inspect it up-close.Thankfully the LCD screen itself is top-notch.No dead pixels, no ghosting, no pulsating spots as with offerings from off-brands like KDS or Cornea.
My only complaint is the control buttons on the monitor have nearly invisible markings.Of course, the automatic adjustment feature means you probably won't have to tinker with the monitor controls, but NEC should have labeled them more clearly.Contrary to what one reviewer claims, the manual *does* mention the buttons and what they do, in a table on p. 7.The buttons are responsive and easy to press, which is an improvement over some previous models. The setup interface is pretty straightforward, although first-timers may need to refer to the manual to see which buttons control what.
In summary, another excellent product from NEC-Mitsubishi.If you want a 17-inch LCD, be sure to get this affordable, high-quality one.
(Note: This model is Macintosh-friendly.)

Product Description:
With a clean, stylish design and a full 17-inch viewing screen, the NEC-Mitsubishi 1760V offers distortion-free imaging and an impressive conservation of desktop space. Combining an exceptional 400:1 contrast ratio with high brightness and 1,280 x 1,024 resolution, business text is cleanly legible while high-end graphics show rich colors and crisp edges.
The tilt/swivel base supplies plenty of comfortable viewing options, and the screen detaches from the base for easy wall mounting. Simple onscreen controls allow you to set the picture to your personal viewing preferences, and the thin frame adds a touch of edgy style. NEC-Mitsubishi includes a three-year warranty covering parts and service with this monitor.

ViewSonic VA2226w 22-inch Wide LCD Computer Monitor (21.6 Viewable) Digital/Analog Review

ViewSonic VA2226w 22-inch Wide LCD Computer Monitor Digital/Analog
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very good monitor for the price.I considered the VX2240W from Viewsonic (for about $100 more), but determined it wasn't worth it.Maybe I'm just cheap. ;-) It seems like it may be the same LCD panel as with the VA2226W but has slightly less bezel coverage and comes with a DVI-D cable.Too bad the VA2226W doesn't come with that cable, but I had an extra lying around.

CORRECTION TO SOME MIS-INFORMATION ABOUT REFRESH RATES --
SpamFreeOrDie says the 60Hz rate is too low, but I'm not sure what that means for an LCD monitor. All of my LCD run at the manufacturer's suggested 60Hz and look great; no flicker like if it was a CRT with such a low refresh (or scan) rate. I don't know what SpamFreeOrDie is seeing with his LCD monitor, but LCD and CRT are quite different in this regard.

LCD at 60Hz is just fine.CRT need a faster refresh rate due to the characteristics of the phosphor on the glass tube.Whereas, an LCD pixel will keep it's image intensity until the next refresh, a phosphor pixel will immediately begin to dim as the electron beam passes it.That passing of the electron beam is at the scan rate (also called, refresh rate). With a CRT a too slow refresh rate will cause flicker.Personally, I set it to at least 85 Hz on my CRT.Refer to this article for more information on refresh rate and scan lines:

[...]

You are not going to see any flicker like with a CRT at such a low refresh, nor will you have a sharpness problem unless you are not displaying at the native resolution.I guess that is the main issue with LCD; like SpamFreeOrDie says, they are best viewed at their native resolution. So if your video card cannot handle the 1680x1050 native resolution of this monitor, you should consider another monitor. Many 19" LCD have a native resolution of 1280x1024, (which isn't widescreen), which is very doable by most video cards manufactured in the last last 3 or 4 years.

The response time IS important with LCD monitors (as with CRT).That is the time that it takes a pixel to change to the next color (or intensity). If the response time is too slow, the image will ghost; that is, you will see trails of the old image as the object moves across the screen. The 5 msec response time of this monitor is just fine; even for fast action games.Personally, I wouldn't get an LCD monitor with more than an 8 msec response time.

ViewSonic VX2025WM 20-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

ViewSonic VX2025WM 20-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this new 20" wide LCD for about two weeks, and it's great. This is an awesome monitor. It's much better than my old Viewsonic VP191s for playing games, reading text, etc and the VP191s was a really high quality monitor of the previous generation of LCD monitors. Playing games and watching movies is significantly clearer than my previous monitor. This is an excellent gaming or movie monitor.
From what i've read, I believe this is a P-MVA panel technology LCD monitor. If you read articles about P-MVA, IPS, TN, etc it may help you decide whether this monitor is right for you because each type of panel technology has drawbacks. Although they say MVA panels are supposed to be the slowest of the types, this monitor is extremely fast and I don't notice any ghosting or blurring when playing games or watching video. I believe the newer generation monitors are using technologies (P-MVA, S-IPS) that narrow the gaps between the technologies especially LCD response times.
There's a tiny amount of blacklight bleed from the bottom left and bottom right corners, but it's only a small amount and only with the lights turned off and with a pure black image on the screen. I've been playing Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and I don't notice any backlight bleeding while playing even with dark scenes and the lights turned off.
There were no dead or always-on pixels that I could find (compared to the VP191s which was an excellent monitor but still had about 3 or 4).I viewed the monitor from all different angles using several different colors (R,G,B, black and white).
I haven't used the built-in speakers, and I probably don't plan to. The speakers in LCDs are only meant to add very basic sound playing capabilities so that you don't need to have speakers separately.
The buttons are great, much easier to work with than my previous LCD monitor.
The high contrast ratio is great and the monitor is bright.
The monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050. This monitor displays a warning whenever you are not in the native dimensions which is a nice idea. You can disable the warning message so that it no longer shows up if you tend to work in other resolutions a lot. It seems like when working in non-native resolutions that it displays better than my previous LCD, but I haven't had much experience. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, and EverQuest II all support the 1680x1050 resolution.

Possible Cons:

The screen looks great, although the bezel is wider than my previous LCD which had a very slim edge/border. The bezel is about 1" thick all the way around the screen edge. The bottom of the monitor bezel has an extra half inch for 3/4 the panel width for whatever reason.
Some other new LCD monitors that I have seen have Picture in Picture capability, so it's too bad this one doesn't but I'm not sure I would have used it anyways.
The monitor doesn't have a USB hub. It would have been nice to have a USB hub built into the monitor.
The stand does not adjust height, although the stand can be removed and the monitor can be wall mounted. It is a fixed stand, but allows the monitor to lean forward or back to adjust the vertical viewing angle moderately.
The stand permanently holds the monitor 4 inches above the desk/table. The actual LCD viewable screen will begin approximately 6 inches above the desk/table.
My previous LCD was great and allowed you full height adjustment including lowering the LCD all the way down onto the desk, which is where your monitor really should be. It also allowed you to flip the monitor sideways. This ViewSonic VX2025WM monitor does neither.
Of all the things I might want to deduct points for, only the lack of an adjustable stand bothers me. I might pickup a "Neo-Flex LCD Stand" from Amazon to see if it is a good replacement for the stand on this monitor.
ADDED INFO: I am using the DVI input for this monitor.
UPDATE - I purchased the Ergotron Neo-Flex LCD Stand ( 33-288-CBL ) and it's an excellent LCD monitor stand when combined with this VW2025WM. It's a great stand and will allow you to lower the height of this LCD all the way onto the desk surface (which is how I like it. The top edge of a monitor should be about 1" to 2" below your own eye level for better ergonomics / less neck strain) or much higher above the desk. The stand allows tilt forward/backwards and even 180 tilt for vertical viewing. I recommend buying the Ergotron Neo-Flex stand if you need a flexible monitor stand rather than the fixed stand that comes with this LCD. The stand is available for purchase here on Amazon.com

Nice, sharp, bright and colorful display. The higher resolution makes a big difference and my Vista Aero graphics never looked better. This is a nice size for a desktop monitor for business and gaming applications. It was easy to set up and it looks really sharp in my home office.

I haven't hooked up the speakers, so I can't speak for the sound quality. If I could figure out how to work them into my 5.1 surround sound system I would, because getting two existing speakers off of the desk would make for a nice, clean look and give me a little more desk space.

ViewSonic VP2365WB 23-Inch IPS LCD Monitor Review

ViewSonic VP2365WB 23 inch IPS LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great monitor -- well thought out, great ergonomics, excellent color reproduction, and of course, a spectacular field of view, thanks to the premium IPS screen.I can look at this screen from virtually any angle without color shifts or brightness changes.

Don't believe the reviews that complain about dimness problems...I don't know what kind of retina-searing technology people are looking for, but this monitor is actually a bit brighter than the LED-backlit screen on my MacBook, which is itself a fairly bright screen.I run them both side-by-side, and I couldn't be happier with the pairing.I've had no complaints about image quality, whatsoever.

Aside from the quality of the panel, this monitor has lots of nice little touches that I demand from a "pro" monitor:a 5-inch height adjust (ESSENTIAL for me, as I'm over six feet tall); the ability to pivot the screen 180 degrees; a wide, stable stand; and a minimalist design. This is not one of those cheap-looking, shiny plastic monstrosities that you'll find at Costco -- the bezel is thin and unobtrusive, and the buttons are tasteful and small. It's no Cinema Display, but it's as nice a design as you'll find without shelling out twice the cash. (Alas!)

My complaints are minor:the controls are a bit goofy to use, and more thought could have been put into the on-screen display. Also, I'd love a version of the display with an LED backlight.Other than that, I think it's a great buy.Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates the quality improvements given by an IPS display.

ViewSonic's VX2739WM 27-Inch 1920x1080 Full HD Monitor Review

ViewSonic's VX2739WM 27 inch 1920x1080 Full HD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used a 19inch Samsung HDTV Ln-1954H as a computer monitor. The desktop, icons, graphics, games- everything seemed to be extra bright. Ive used an Acer monitor, NEC, as well as a Mac and found none of those to be as bright. 2 years later, I upgraded to this Viewsonic. I had been over the search engine trying to find hands-on articles, reviews, pictures, and Ive found mixed reviews. A few reviews cited a bleed (light/glow appearing around the edges of the LCD), bleached colors, and a wobbly stand. While the stand, in my opinion, is stable enough (provided you fasten it to the neck or can be mounted on wall) the monitor is fine [notice I make no mention of the audio function]. After the brighter-than-normal colors on the Samsung, I find the so called bleached colors are welcome. When playing a video disk, the colors are seem normal- although a user can adjust the color temperature on the OnScreen Display. A user can also use the manual controls through a video card suite like ATI Catalyst Control Center or the NVidia equivalent.
A nice quality of the this Viewsonic makes everything look sharp- the Windows Start button in Windows7 looks sharper, the Windows logo in Office2007 does too. Adobe Creative Suite looks as sharp as it should on a Mac (although proper color adjustments are still necessary for graphic work). Games look sharp, there is no ghosting, thanks to the 1MS response time. My brother had noticed a increase in the amount of detail that the Viewsonic shows over my old Samsung.
Hooked up to a HDMI switcher, a game console also looks nice on this machine. The PS3 XMB looks sharp, Blu-Rays seem better (although the increase in the screen size also helps here), even the Earth visualization in the music player seems a whole lot better. An AT&T cable box, connected via HDMI, looks nice too. Upscaling on the HD channels as well as the native upscaling on a capable computer and game console keeps a good image quality. Nothing seems stretched. Now I must mention this: Using a HDMI cable to connect a HD monitor/HDTV to a computer, cable/sat box, game console is recommended to preserve the screen aspect! If you use anything less the image quality will be significantly reduced.

While the bleed is noticeable- it is no different that my Samsung or other monitors Ive used. Sure, it may be noticeable while watching a movie but it is not a show stopper. Ive watched several movies already and have not noticed it.
The sound is another issue. While HDMI cables support -of course- video they also support audio. This monitor supports Dolby something or another but the audio quality is horrible. Sounds like the monitor has metal cans around the speakers. There is volume control in the OSD but I recommend it on mute, adjust your computer default playback device to computer speakers, and get a Windows Media Center compatible remote like a Gyration GYR3101US. Finding a good balance with the monitor's volume and the volume of your box or console is difficult. While Comcast had a volume control for its HD box, AT&T does not. A PS3 has a volume control for music and video disks but not for games. Even then, the PS3 volume contorl is not that advanced or helpful.
If you connect a game console or cable/sat box: use a theater system. With the monitor's audio quality so bad I would say there are no or very few other options.

Would I recommend this product?
I like it but there is room for improvement. While this monitor performs well by simply displaying your desktop and windows, showing graphics and games with nothing but praise, and increases the amount of workspace to have plenty of windows open- I would recommend it for the family computer, a single user computer, work computer. I would not recommend this monitor for those who would would use it strictly for music(poor audio quality and control) or videos and the hardcore gamers (bleed through). This is a good monitor but for everyday use with minimal to moderate multimedia applications.

1ms response time for virtually blur free motion
1080p Full HD resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio for perfect image reproduction
HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs provide diverse connectivity options
4-port USB hub for easy connectivity of USB devices such as digital cameras, USB flash drives and mice
Integrated speakers with SRS Premium Sound for high quality sound experience
200mmx100mm VESA compliant for wall mount or monitor stands
Highest grade LCD panel with the best pixel performance policy in the industry

What is 1ms response time?
Response time in monitors refer to the amount of time a pixel (dot) takes to go from black to white and back to black again. It is measured in milliseconds (ms). The lower the number, the faster the pixels can change, reducing the ghosting or streaking effect you might see in a moving or changing image such as in games and movies.

Common response times range anywhere from 14ms to 5ms. Monitors that are designed for faster applications feature response times as fast as 2ms. These monitors are ideal for gamers, video enthusiasts, engineers and movie production houses.

Slow (higher) response time

Fast (lower) response time

Another first from Viewsonic!
Being one of the technology leaders in the display industry, Viewsonic was the first to introduce an LCD monitor with 2ms response time back in 2005. Today, ViewSonic is here again to introduce the World's first 27" monitor with 1ms response time delivering the long-awaited good news to gamers and video enthusiasts everywhere.
Full HD 1080p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio
The VX2739wm features a 27" widescreen with 1920x1080 resolution that is capable of displaying a native Full HD 1080p image. Today, devices that can display Full HD content output are getting more and more common. However, without a native Full HD display, you will not be able to experience the picture clarity and the details of the 1080p content you view.

The Viewsonic VX2739wm's 27" panel offers another new trend in the LCD panel market, the16:9 aspect ratio. This new aspect ratio not only natively supports Full HD 1080p content, but displays Full HD without distortion. For example, a 1920x1200 resolution monitor will also support Full HD 1080p but it will either stretch to fit into a full screen or would show blank side bars to avoid distortion. With a 16:9 aspect ratio panel, you will get the most out of your HD content since it is natively designed in this format.

The Power of HDMI
HDMI is one of the most powerful and widely available communication standards that connects digital audio/video sources such as set-top boxes, DVD players, personal computers (PCs, laptops), video game consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360, and AV receivers to compatible digital audio devices, computer monitors, and digital televisions. With just one cable, HDMI supports any TV or PC video format, including high-definition video and up to 8 channels of digital audio. This powerful technology comes standard in VX2739wm. This way, you can connect your monitor to your desktop or laptop computer and work, surf the web or play games. Or you can connect it to your gaming console and enjoy the large 27" screen, 1ms response time time andintegrated speakers. You can even connect it to a cable box or a satellite receiver and watch TV on your monitor!Although the monitor doesn't have a tuner to receive the TV signals from the air, HDMI +receiver box combination gives you the same TV experience. And another great example of the countless video sources you connect to is a Blu-ray DVD/CD player.

Computer

Gaming console

Cable/satallite receiver

DVD/Blu-ray player

Pair it with a ViewSonic or Mac computer
One of the key advantages of the VX2739wmis its diverse connectivity options making it flexible to be paired with a PC or a Mac computer. I too purchased this at a club store for a discounted price ($219 with a coupon) and it is truly a beauty. I use it at work for documents mostly. Do not be put off by the earlier review's comment about text--it is perfectly fine and the text is actually sharp and easy to read. Took five minutes to set up, and I'm back to work right away. Excellent product, and ViewSonic's reliability is well known.

I purchased this television as a computer monitor.I wanted it because of the LCD backlight, built in speakers, and large screen, for a computer monitor. When I purchased it my computer had not yet been built so I hooked it up to my cable box and WOW what a great picture!Granted I was coming from an old CRT television but hey this thing was very impressive! It is very customizable and can be set on preset settings as well.It worked great to replace a 1981 circa Magnavox in my bedroom.I used it for a couple of weeks as a television and when my computer came in I switched it to a computer monitor.I had purchased an HDMI cable from AMAZON before my computer arrived.Plugged in the HDMI cable and the power and keyboard and wal-la the picture came on with the sound! No need to configure the system to set up, it just works!Right out of the box.Being an informed consumer I had read that you need to calibrate the screen.Well when the monitor first came on I understood why.Things seemed a little blurry.I set the Veiwsonic to Computer and it helped but this was not yet the solution.I then found in Windows 7 the clear type set up under the control panel and displays.Once you configure to clear type this thing looks great! It is like reading on a piece of paper!Screens and videos look great!I am running Windows 7 64-bit professional. The high resolution high definition screen is very impressive! For me the price was right because I have a computer monitor that can be a television if I want as well.It has three HDMI connections so I can connect another computer, maybe a Mac Mini in the future, and later maybe an X-box 360!You can easily switch with the touch sensitive controls or use the remote. The colors and contrast are really incredible. This television/monitor is a great deal for the money!I caught mine at a good time to purchase because I got it for about twenty-five dollars under three-hundred dollars! If you read these reviews often you will know why I wrote it like that.It runs cool, comes on after a 5 second Viewsonic warm up screen, switches between sources easily, looks great and works like it is supposed to!In short I like this monitor a lot!

To me it rivals the Apple LED Cinema Display.Notice I said rivals not as good as or surpasses! This television is great! It works as a monitor wonderfully!Part of the reason I purchased it is due to the fact that I wanted built in speakers and an HDMI connection.I did not want to have a video cable, power cord, speakers, speaker wire, and another power cord for the speakers forming a web on my desk. This set up is clean and simple.HDMI cable to the back of the computer to the monitor, then everything works. One power cord for the monitor and one for the computer. Simple!I compared it to the Apple Cinema Display because I was thinking of using one of these to connect to my PC.Unfortunately you would need to by the Apple Mini Display video connector to HDMI conversion plug and pray that it would work.I could never get assurances that you could get PC drivers for the camera and I did not find anyone that said that it worked when they connected to a PC.Oh and also to buy the Apple you would need to cough up three times the money!I know the Apple display is IPS has a glass screen (the Viewsonic has the plasticky laptop screen) and a built in video camera.Still this does not make it worth nearly a thousand dollars! I do wish that Viewsonic would place a glass screen on this television; it would move it up in class, and admittedly in cost.I wish they would install a camera on the top of the screen, a good one, like the new ones from Logitech! Then they would have a true Apple competitor! When I looked around for a large screen, LED backlight, High definition monitor, with multiple HDMI connections, and built in speakers the Viewsonic television is the only one I could find this affordably. This is the only monitor, or television, that came close to the Apple Display, and after purchasing it and using it as both a television and a monitor, I feel that it has lived up to its printed specifications and my expectations!Buy one I think you will agree!

One more thing; I purchased this through Amazon along with another item through J&R Audio.I had to return the other item after purchasing it.I could not have had a better experience from the folks at J&R Music. They were kind, helpful, and did everything they said that they would do and even faster than they said they would do it.It is rare these days to find a company that under promises and over delivers and I feel these folks did.I am always leery of ordering from a reseller and these folks gave me confidence!

ViewSonic VX1932wm-LED 19-Inch WLED-Backlit Energy Efficient LCD Monitor Review

My 19-inch Hyundai monitor died last week after four years (failed circuit board - not economical to repair), so I needed a replacement. The old monitor was SXGA (1280x1024), and I was hoping to move up to HD (1920x1080).However, my graphics chips won't support HD resolution, and my power supply won't support a new graphics card.So I confined my search to SXGA-class monitors. This one caught my eye, mostly because of the LED backlight (no CCFL to burn out) and claimed energy efficiency (15 watts, compared to 45 watts for the deceased Hyundai). It's not exactly SXGA, being slightly wider and shorter (1440x900).The total pixel count is about 1% less than SXGA, so I didn't think I'd be sacrificing much. Now that I have the monitor, I must say that I'm not sacrificing anything. The screen is much brighter and clearer than the old one, and when the monitor wakes up there's no warm-up time (CCFLs normally take a couple of minutes to get up to full brightness).Colors are vivid, and whites seem more white than with CCFL.I wanted to verify the power consumption, so I tested it with my Kill-A-Watt meter. It registered 14 watts - even better than the manufacturer's claims.I can't vouch for the quality of the internal speakers, as I use external speakers. But as a monitor I give it highest marks.

I bought this monitor to replace a 10 year old 18" LCD.The monitor was easy to assemble, the color and size are nice, very nice.It took a little tweaking to get the color right on my Mac Mini, but once done the picture is quite stunning.
There are a couple of downsides, hence the 4 stars. The monitor does support DVI, but does not come with a DVI cable only VGA.Luckily, I had a spare DVI cable.Second, the speakers are not really good. They are fine for normal computer use, but if listen to a lot of music or movies on your computer, you will probably not like the built-in speakers.
All in all, a great monitor for the price.I recommend it.
