Samsung SyncMaster 941BW 19-inch LCD Monitor - Black Review

Samsung SyncMaster 941BW 19-inch LCD Monitor - Black
Average Reviews:

This monitor is an absolutely incredible value for the price.Cheap, great picture, top notch color, all the quality and speed you'd expect from a Samsung LCD monitor, and a really attractive design that looks great on your desk.

My only hesitation is that I think the ideal wide screen monitor is a couple inches larger than this (I use a 22" widescreen at work), but I just couldn't resist the price of this beauty when replacing my NEC MultiSync 17" CRT monitor at home (which was a very good monitor as well in it's day with great color).

You'll definitely want to drop the brightness level on this Samsung though as the default factory setting is pretty hard on the eyes.

I'm using the DVI connection and recommend you do the same if at all possible - DVI really helps sharpen up LCD's.

If your wallet is feeling a little thick lately, I'd get Samsung's 22", but otherwise you'll still be thrilled with this monitor.

HP W2007 20-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor Review

HP W2007 20-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

This monitor is my first LCD and was an upgrade to a ViewSonic 17".I cannot get over how beautiful the colors and picture are.I find myself loading up old games and DVDs just to examine the quality.

It does not come with a DVI cable which I could not find any indication of on the box itself. Also, the information listed here on Amazon under "Technical Details" and "Product Description" differs in regards to the supported resolution. The "Technical Details" are correct. The suggested resolution is 1680 x 1050 and not 1440 x 900.I suspect the smaller resolution is probably correct for the 19" w1907 model.

I did not have a DVI cable already, so at first connected it using the included 15 pin cable and was very impressed on first use. Then I managed to get a DVI-D M/M cable and was even more impressed at the gorgeous picture quality.Definitely worth the extra purchase of a DVI cable.Just don't buy one at a local store where they go for upwards of 50 bucks.Amazon is a wonderful and very affordable alternative.

Mainly my experience with this monitor is in a Windows XP SP2 environment, although I do have a dual boot with Mandriva Linux. The printed instructions that came with the hardware were limited to a simplistic poster which was clear enough and the Windows software installation from the included CD went quickly and flawlessly.Getting the monitor setup in the Linux environment, however, was a bit of a chore and I still have yet to get it do display in the maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050.But that is probably more related to my own challenges using Linux.

I highly recommend this product. The widescreen aspect is outstanding for DVDs and iTunes videos.World of Warcraft never looked so beautiful on my system. In fact it's performed beautifully for every game I've thrown at it so far: WoW, Quake3, BF1942, BF2.Couldn't be happier.Except with maybe a 30". ;)

Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24" LCD Monitor Review

Samsung SyncMaster 245T 24' LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Crisp, clean, bright picture. Brilliant colors. Much better viewing area than the cheaper competition. Hands down the best monitor I tried. I have tried:

Gateway FHD2400 24" widescreen
Samsung 2496HM 24" widescreen
Samsung 245BW 24" widescreen

and this one.

The 245T has a pixel viewing angle of 178 degrees compared to the others which are 160 degrees. That means that I can see all the screen including the edges of the screen clearly. 24 inches is big. With a lesser viewing angle, the only clear viewability is directly forward at eye level. With 160 degrees, I look to the lower left edge of the screen and images are blurry and less color. 178 degrees allows it to be as clear and crisp no matter where my eye/head position is. With the 160 degrees, when I walked over to the monitor (standing) I could not see the elements of the taskbar (e.g. look for a "new mail" icon). I had to bend down and look at eye level to make out what was on the screen. With 178 degrees, I can see it while standing up. Huge difference.

The colors on this are the best too. The picture is clean, whiter, hotter, more adjustable. All the others had overly-red saturation no matter what settings I tried.

The 245T has actual buttons rather than the dumbly-designed touch/heat sensitive panel on some others.

I ordered this on Amazon, and it arrived next day and works beautifully.
It's more expensive than the other monitors, but I use a monitor all day. Chintzing on a monitor would be a bad idea, like trying to save money by buying a cheaper mattress, or a cheap desk chair. Not a good idea to buy bad quality for something that is an integral part of my life.

If my needs were less vigorous, like paying bills online or other tasks that only involved brief episodes with a computer, I might be satisfied with one of the other cheap models. But in my opinion, there is absolutely no comparison between the 245T and anything else I saw in my extensive searching for a 24" widescreen monitor. The 245T is worth it.

HP W1907 19-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor Review

HP W1907 19-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First let me say that I am hardly an expert in PC displays and have a great deal more experience with LCD HDTVs. This is my first TFT display, and I am absolutely floored at how much more enjoyable the visual experience of Windows Vista Aero is.

I am running the display in 1440 x 900 and it looks bright, sharp and the colors are perfect. The display comes with a fairly advanced configuration tool, HP My Display, for those who really want to tweak settings for maximum accuracy in colors, brightness and sharpness. I have not had to use this yet, as the default settings seem too good for me to do any better.

If you have been using a regular LCD display or a CRT monitor, buying a solid TFT display like this is well worth the money. It's like wiping away that cloudy film that builds up on a car windshield.

The speakers are convenient, but low-quality. This did not prevent me from giving the unit a 5 because that's what I expect from built-in speakers. They are not visible, located on the bottom of the monitor. Quality-wise they are probably on par with fairly good built-in notebook speakers (primary issue being no bass).

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently did some much needed upgrades for my home office and this by far my favorite.I first saw it in Best Buy, came home to check for online reviews and to see if I could find it cheaper...I did at Amazon!

It's VERY easy to set up and is crystal clear.( I mean, razor sharp -- no stretched or blurred look anywhere!)However, there was something not quite right with the colors (especially greens) that really bothered me.PLUS the HP "My Display" software that goes with it that contains all of the drivers etc, is not fully functional on non HP machines. (meaning no calibration was available for color or contrast beyond what's built into the monitor itself which was never enough to fix my problem)I was so frustrated and disappointed.(I had been warned of this on another site but thought I'd take a gamble)Well, after trying to hook it up via the HDMI (from VGA) cable that came with it to a new $150 video card -- the colors were still way off and now the screen was all jumpy from that stupid card...(that went right back!) Then, I noticed something when I right clicked on my desktop to adjust my display settings (in XP pro) there was a selection (that had been there all along...duh) that said NVIDIA Control Panel (my internal graphics card) and I was able to calibrate the colors and adjust everything else there and now everything's hunky dory! When it first boots up, the colors look a little neon-ish again but within seconds it goes to the profile I created from my graphics card software.I am sure many would have figured it out sooner than I did, I just wanted to prevent anyone else from beating their head against the wall for a week like I did if I could.(BTW, I have completely removed the video card that I bought and it's hooked up via VGA and it is still crisp and clear)

**BTW, even though the My Display software is largely useless for me, I left it there. For some reason when I uninstalled it, the light that's under the transparent power button on the top of the monitor goes away. That was the only noticeable change after uninstalling it but it annoyed me, so I reinstalled it and it's back on and I just ignore the software**

My husband and I publish a local magazine that is glossy and full color and I am able to do so much more with this monitor than I could before.I can view two (sometimes 3) projects side by side if need be...I love that! And typing an email in outlook looks like it's in about a 60 font! And programs like Illustrator where you need a lot of workspace it's invaluable.I never have to scroll around to grab or view something. My last monitor was a 19" Sony flat panel (that cost more than TWICE what this one did 4 years ago) and I thought it was just fine but once I plugged this lil beauty in I quickly passed it on to my son for his computer.I haven't needed to use the portrait position of the screen so I haven't even tried it.But it came that way when it arrived and was very easy to swivel back around.

One bad thing...don't count on ditching your speakers for the ones that come with this one -- man do they stink!I swear my laptop has better speakers. But it's sort of like people griping that their cell phone camera doesn't take good enough pictures. If you want a good camera buy a camera! If you want a good monitor buy this one and just pretend the speakers aren't even there. The price is way worth it even without the speakers.

Acer H213H bmid 21-Inch Widescreen LCD Display (Black) Review

Acer H213H bmid 21 inch Widescreen LCD Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money I think it is quite the deal. If the screen is totally black there is a little light leak at the top and bottom, but it's not noticeable once any type of picture is being displayed. It also does a fair job displaying at other resolutions when you switch from the native 1920x1080. The sound comes from only one speaker, but it is adequate for most of the stuff you do on a computer (dinks, donks, buzzes and simple dialog). If you want to listen to music I would recommend going with external speakers. The only other rub is although you can tilt the screen it doesn't go up and down, but hey...It only cost me $179 for a 1920X1080 monitor. Keep in mind that it also has HDMI and came with the feaking HDMI cable....NICE! Why these cables cost $30 in Wal-mart for the cheep ones is beyond me?????? All in all a definite 2 thumbs up!

Product Description:
Brightly colorful with easy adjustment controls for just the right viewing for your environment, the 19-inch Samsung SyncMaster 920NW LCD monitor is a great choice for adding more screen real estate to your computer's desktop. In addition to its widescreen resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels--offering native 720p high definition clarity--the 920NW has a blazing fast 5ms (millisecond) response time, perfect for playing immersive 3D games and watching action-packed movies without ghosting or pixelation. It connects to desktop and laptop PCs using a VGA/D-Sub port.

The 920NW provides native 720p high-definition resolution (1440 x 900) and a fast 5ms response rate. This monitor's specs also include a 160-degree viewing angle (both horizontal and vertical), a high level of brightness with a 300 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) rating and a 700:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a monitor's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)
The 920NW's 19-inch screen (measured diagonally) is framed by a narrow bezel, ensuring that this monitor won't overpower your desk with its size. The monitor sits atop a rounded base that can tilt forward and backward for just the right view. The back includes a power connector, VGA (15-pin D-Sub) connector, and lock connector (for optional Kensington locks to secure the monitor to your desk). This monitor is Energy Star qualified, with a 42 watt power consumption rating and less than 1 watt of consumption in stand-by mode.
This monitor includes several Samsung technologies that enhance your viewing, including MagicColor, which improves and adjusts mid-level colors to shades the eye accepts as natural, and MagicBright, which creates an optimal viewing environment, based on the the image you're watching. It also includes the MagicTune monitor config application, which makes it simple and convenient to tweak your screen's settings.
MagicTune
By now, you've probably experienced the frustration of pushing buttons on the front of your monitor to access the variety of onscreen menus to adjust its settings. Samsung has now created a software application that's designed to optimize all monitor settings, and is equipped with an intuitive GUI (Graphic User Interface) which includes many more features. MagicTune employs an advanced display technology, called the DDC/CI (Display Data Channel Command Interface) protocol, to control all monitor settings.
Colors on an LCD will adjust and will appear different to the average user when the system is changed, depending on the characteristics and performance settings of the system. MagicTune provides a Color Calibration feature that helps set the LCD monitor color to a default color standard. This feature simplifies the complex gamma correction process into a few simple steps, enabling you to enjoy the same optimized high quality color standard on every system.

Response Time -- The amount of time it takes for a liquid crystal cell to from active (black) to inactive (white) and back against to active (black). ViewSonic VA2226w 22-inch Wide LCD Computer Monitor (21.6 Viewable) Digital/Analog Review

ViewSonic VA2226w 22-inch Wide LCD Computer Monitor Digital/Analog
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very good monitor for the price.I considered the VX2240W from Viewsonic (for about $100 more), but determined it wasn't worth it.Maybe I'm just cheap. ;-) It seems like it may be the same LCD panel as with the VA2226W but has slightly less bezel coverage and comes with a DVI-D cable.Too bad the VA2226W doesn't come with that cable, but I had an extra lying around.

CORRECTION TO SOME MIS-INFORMATION ABOUT REFRESH RATES --
SpamFreeOrDie says the 60Hz rate is too low, but I'm not sure what that means for an LCD monitor. All of my LCD run at the manufacturer's suggested 60Hz and look great; no flicker like if it was a CRT with such a low refresh (or scan) rate. I don't know what SpamFreeOrDie is seeing with his LCD monitor, but LCD and CRT are quite different in this regard.

LCD at 60Hz is just fine.CRT need a faster refresh rate due to the characteristics of the phosphor on the glass tube.Whereas, an LCD pixel will keep it's image intensity until the next refresh, a phosphor pixel will immediately begin to dim as the electron beam passes it.That passing of the electron beam is at the scan rate (also called, refresh rate). With a CRT a too slow refresh rate will cause flicker.Personally, I set it to at least 85 Hz on my CRT.Refer to this article for more information on refresh rate and scan lines:

[...]

You are not going to see any flicker like with a CRT at such a low refresh, nor will you have a sharpness problem unless you are not displaying at the native resolution.I guess that is the main issue with LCD; like SpamFreeOrDie says, they are best viewed at their native resolution. So if your video card cannot handle the 1680x1050 native resolution of this monitor, you should consider another monitor. Many 19" LCD have a native resolution of 1280x1024, (which isn't widescreen), which is very doable by most video cards manufactured in the last last 3 or 4 years.

The response time IS important with LCD monitors (as with CRT).That is the time that it takes a pixel to change to the next color (or intensity). If the response time is too slow, the image will ghost; that is, you will see trails of the old image as the object moves across the screen. The 5 msec response time of this monitor is just fine; even for fast action games.Personally, I wouldn't get an LCD monitor with more than an 8 msec response time.

HP 2709m 27-Inch Diagonal Full HD LCD Monitor (Black) Review

HP 2709m 27 inch Diagonal Full HD LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 24" Acer LCD died a few weeks ago, so I went to Fry's Electronics to browse the selection. It's been a few years since I researched LCD's, and I'm happy to report that the technology has come a long way!The HP 2709m exemplifies this beautifully. After owning and using this monitor daily for the last two weeks, I've decided to write a review for it.Here are my thoughts on the monitor:

* 27" - huge!

* Great contrast

* Great colors

* Reflective-coating (not sure what the technical name is) - turns the monitor into a bit of a mirror, but also sharpens the colors tremendously versus matte-finish LCD's so to me it's worth a bit of on-screen reflection

* Reasonable response time.Aside from working and web-surfing, I also play FPS games (e.g. Crysis) and watch movies on this monitor; I've been satisfied with the pixel response time.Ghosting is non-existent, though LCD monitors can't hold a candle to traditional CRT monitors when comparing image stability on fast-moving objects. For instance, when a camera pans the background in a movie, or when you spin your character around in a video game, just like all LCD's, there is some blurring (not ghosting, there is a difference).

* Built-in Speakers - I haven't used them, but they are there if I ever need them.

* No annoying LED's - you can turn off the power LED on the front of the monitor so that there is no annoying LED blasting you in the eyes like many LCD monitors seem to have. This is especially nice when watching a movie in a dark room - the only thing lit up on the monitor is the screen itself.

* Ambient Light Sensor - automatically adjusts the brightness of the monitor to the brightness of the ambient lighting in your room. For instance, if you are using the monitor in a dark room, the brightness is automatically decreased so that your eyes don't fry (likewise, in a bright room, the monitor brightens the back-light).This feature can be disabled; I have it turned off because I prefer a fairly dark monitor relative to what the monitor's designers must prefer, especially when reading onscreen text. The only thing I would change would be to add a user-selectable base-level for the ambient light sensor so that it can properly adjust to the environment using the viewer's personal preference as the base level.

* The stand is solid and has a small footprint.

* The look and finish is understated, glossy and bares few labels.Very nice.

Overall, I am impressed and give this monitor a full five stars.

I just love this no nonsense Acer 19inch widescreen monitor. It was easy to set up and the picture is crisp. I did have to adjust the clarity to my liking, again this was simple with the buttons right on the front. I have external speakers on my computer so the fact that this monitor has no speakers suits me fine. I am not a gamer, but rather do a lot of word processing and surfing. All in all, the price is great, the warranty is for three years, the screen is crisp and bright, all the ingredients for one happy camper! I, with clear conscience, recommend this monitor!

HP W2207 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor Review

HP W2207 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an Apple devotee, I feel like a bit of a traitor writing a positive review of an HP product, but WOW this thing is great! I bought it as a second monitor to my MacBook. Apple MacBook MA701LL/A 13.3" Notebook PC (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive) - BlackThe color is brilliant, the contrast is impressive, the text pops and it's just plain beautiful to look at, even if you are working. I literally find myself working on things because I don't want to take my eyes off it.

While I love the look of Apple's cinema monitors, the price point is just so high. The HP w2207 represents a far more reasonable price point. Also, if you're a writer like me, HP makes a clip system for this series of monitors, so you can have a document holder off to the side without having to glue something to side of your monitor untiil the end of time.

If you're an art director, graphic designer, or similar artists thinking, "Ah-ha, this guy's a copywriter. What does he know about monitors?" Well I've been in advertising since 1996 and I've seen all kinds of monitors and this is one of the most impressive I've ever seen at any price.

Also, I took sometime to compare this model to others available for sale from a variety of manufacturers and no one matches the image quality in my opinion. This might seem strange for HP to come out on top in comparison to other companies that specialize in monitors, but the truth is people largely, buy their computers based on the quality and look of the monitor. Apple realized this early on and apparently someone told HP too. I wonder how many HP computer bundles are going to be sold based on the performance of this beauty?

Sure, it takes a little adjustment both on the monitor itself and on the display portion of the system preferences, but it's easy enough.

Plus, the built in speakers are much better than you'd expect from a monitor and the built in 2 USB hub is a nice little touch. More would have been better, but an extra usb port is always nice.

All of this said, there are some flaws with this monitor.

1. The rotating screen landscape-or-portrait function is great, but it doesn't work with the MacBook in Mac mode. What I'm talking about is the ability to physically turn the monitor and have the display go into a portrait arrangement. It's probably too much to ask for from a monitor made by a PC manufacturer, but it would have been nice if the software bundle would have included something for us, Mac people. It still works with the MacBook just fine in landscape mode, but it would have been nice to have this particular bell and whistle.

2. The monitor does have a DVI connection as well as an analog VGA connection, but it only comes with an analog VGA wire. Don't settle for VGA, when there's DVI to be had! Order a DVI wire with your order like this one.Cables To Go 2m DVI-D M/M Dual Link Digital Video Cable The response time is appreciably faster than with VGA. It's slight, but it's there.

3. Hopefully, this won't be an issue, but its warranty is for only one year, while others come with a three year warranty. This is a little disconcerting, but I'd rather have one year of looking at this screen than 3 years of looking at washed out or drab monitor.

4. The screen does pick up reflections more readily than other flat panels.

And even with these shortcomings, I've still got to give it 5 stars. It's just that beautiful!

UPDATE: Although mine did not, this monitor now does come with a DVI cable. So you won't need to buy one separately.

DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand Review

DELL UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD Monitor with Height Adjustable Stand
Average Reviews:

What's the best thing about going into an Apple store? The hordes of black-shirted dudes with gleaming iPods round their necks? The Genius Bar answering any and every question that might come up in the Apple universe? Well, in my book it's the rows of Macs with those killer large TFT screens. Even if a lowly Mac Mini is out on display, it will be connected to a gleaming Apple Cinema Display, and even the iMac G5s seem to favour the 20" models. As for the Power Macs, a pair of 24" or 30" screens seems to be the only way to truly show off Final Cut Pro or Logic.

Cinema Displays are killer cool, with their gleaming aluminium cases and fabulous industrial design. They are priced as a premium product, and they look like they are worth every penny but that doesn't make it any easier to afford one. I'd always thought that I would never be able to aspire to such a fine window to OS X. However, I have recently discovered that this is not the case. This technology is now available to us mere mortals, for little more than half the price that Apple charges.

Come Over to the Dark Side
You see, there is only one supplier of 20" 1680x1050 resolution panels that manufactures in volume - LG.Philips. Accordingly, Dell's 20" 2005FPW panel uses exactly the same LCD panel as Apple's 20" Cinema Display. Dell prices for monitors start out somewhat less expensive than Apple, but are frequently discounted by massive percentages, something Apple is not known for.

I needed to replace the 17" Acer panel I was using on my Power Mac G5. It showed poor colour registration and some fuzziness, principally because it only had a captive analogue connector, and no DVI input. It was playing havoc with my digital photography work, and was quite uncomfortable to use for long periods. I decided to get a DVI display, and when I got wind that Dell had a sale on their widescreen displays, I got my credit card revved. Three days later, a courier delivered my new screen.

Now, with Dell you get good value, a three-year warranty and industrial design that is firmly placed in the mid-nineties. The 2005FPW is dressed in a plastic shell in standard Dell dark grey, with the occasional silver highlight. However, build quality is very good, and the monitor ships with a robust grey and silver stand with cable management and height adjustment. The stand also allows the display to be rotated through ninety degrees to display a portrait image, though I have not tried this myself as I do not have enough vertical room on my desk. I believe this functionality will work without additional software on any Mac that is running OS X 10.4 Tiger and has an ATI graphics card.

As well as this feature, the monitor is stuffed with other goodies as well. There are four inputs (DVI, VGA, RGB and Composite) as well as a plethora of display modes, including a very funky picture-in-picture mode, which allows TV monitoring or multiple PCs to be used in you have them cabled correctly. The monitor has four USB ports, and acts as a USB hub - two are on the back and two are on the side. Dell also throws in power, DVI and VGA cables in the box but as you might expect on a higher-end product, none of the cables are captive to the monitor.

The only thing that is missing are speakers. I personally see this as no great loss, as monitor speakers are rarely of good quality. Dell will send a media bar with speakers as an add on to the monitor if required,

Yada, Yada, Yada - What Does It Look Like?
In a word & superb! Connected via DVI, a bright and clear image of my Tiger desktop is displayed, and running through the calibration screens shows that no changes are necessary. Backlighting is strong and even across the display, and contrast looks fine. DVD and video playback shows little smearing to my jaded eyes, though I have to admit I am not a big movie watcher while I sit in front of my computer. Of course, DVDs play back in the 16:9 aspect ratio they were designed for, and the excellent contrast ratio means that blacks look black and a 'washed-out' image is not seen.

I do play the occasional game, though, so I fired up Halo to see how the Dell performed. After adjusting the monitor to display the image in the centre of the screen rather than stretching it to fill the display, I was pleased to see that here too the image was bright and showed little ghosting.

What I was really pleased with was the way this display affects my workflow. In Photoshop, you can push the took palettes to the edge of the screen while working on a large representation of your image, browsing images is a much nicer experience as well, and iPhoto really works best on a widescreen display. The Finder takes on a new ease of use as it is easier to drag and drop between two windows that you can actually see, and applications like Mail, iTunes or NetNewsWire really benefit from the extra real estate.

The Bottom Line
Of course, it makes sense that the extra screen real estate that a 1680x1050 display gives you will improve your computing experience, and it s a no-brainer if the price is right. Here in the UK, you can pick up a decent, brand name 17" 1280x1024 4:3 ratio panel for around £170, or US$300. A 19" 4:3 panel will give you the same resolution for around £240, or US$425. This panel lists with Dell at £507 (US$900), which is £40 less than the price for a 20" Apple Cinema Display. However, I got it from Dell at £325 (US$575), substantially less than the Apple product. I am lead to believe from some of the posts I see online that in the US, rebates can bring the price below the $400 mark!

I can remember just a few years ago that 17" CRTs or 15" TFT flat panels were priced at just over £300. The fact that for a little more you can today get such a fantastic display amazes me. As you spend all of your computing time looking at your monitor, and such a device should last longer than your current Macintosh, I feel that these displays represent excellent value for money.

MyMac Rating:
At this sort of price, I have no hesitation at all at giving the Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20" Widescreen Display a mark of five out five.
